Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 17, 1913.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914:. Serial No. 748,838.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. Sonirrs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of lVayne and State of Michigan, have invented ceruseful Improvements in Stoves,
following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
his invention relates to a stove which is heated by the exhaust of an internal combustion motor and serves not only for use as a cooker or heater but also as a means for jacketing the mufller to prevent the escape of heat when the muffler is in confined quarters, as for example, a compartment in the hull of a small. boat.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in vertical section of one form of mulller stove that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof; Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section of a modified form of the stove; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the modication.
Referring to the drawings, an upright pipe 1 from the exhaust manifold. of a motor supports a concave or dished mufl'ler base 2 which screwthreaded or otherwise cured to the pipe. A baflle olate 3 is held in spaced relation at an interval above the base 2 as by suitable studs 4 or the like. the proximate faces of the base 2 and battle beine' appropriately shaped to give the proper diffusion and direction to the exhaust so as to silence the latter to a considerable extent. A. discharge pipe 5 is screwthreaded into or otherwise suitably secured on the battle 3 and is provided with a plurality of inlet apertures 6. A drum 7 that is retained by a flange 8 on the base or other suitable means, is concentric with the pipe 5 and is closed by a top 9 that is telescoped over or screwthreaded on a portion of the pipe 5. A. jacket 10 of asbestos or like heat insulating ma terial surrounds the drum 7 bands 11 being used to form an air space between the jacket and drum and exterior bands 12 or other suitable means retaining the jacket in. place. An oven having a wall 22 of sheet metal or other suitable material is mounted on the top 9 so as to form a substantially flush continuation of thc mufllcr drum, the wall being attached to the top as by an angle iron 13 and suitable bolts or rivets 14;. Covers 15 for the oven with suitable handles 16 fit closely around the pipe 6 and effectively close the oven. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the pipes 1 and c are in alinement and the drum of the mull'le is substantially cylindrical. Conseql'lently the pipe 5 passes centrally through the oven. If preferred the base 2 may be substantially oval or of other desired conformation as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4-. In such instance a mufller exhaust pipe 17 is secured in offset relation to the pipe 1 and the oven wall 18 is correspondingly formed with a one piece cover 1!) that has a slot at one end through which the pipe 17 passes, the slot beingclosed when the cover is in position, by a suitable slide 20. In either construction if it is desired to prevent the escape of heat from the mufl'lcr a sheet 21 of insulating material is placed over the top of the mulller and in the base of the oven so that the latter merely becomes a warming chamber. For cooking purposes this sheet of insulating material is removed. As a result of this construction the heat of the exhaust of an internal combustion motor may be utilized for cooking.
The device is especially useful on motor boats or other places where space is limited and the exhaust of a motor is available. The device takes up a little more room than the ordinary muffler and has the added feature of insulating the heat from the mul'ller to a great degree.
lVhat I claim is The combination with a mufller drum having an exhaust pipe protruding therefrom adjacent a side wall of said drum, of an oven upon said drum around said exhaust pipe and having a large compartment therein at an end opposite said pipe, a cover on said oven around said exhaust pipe, and a detachable slide carried by said cover and engaging said exhaust pipe to permit of said cover being removed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
