Description

ISABEL EDGAR MALARKEY, OF PQBTLND, OREGON.
T21Mnl-S)ZELE SANITARY MATTRESS FOR. INVALIDS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aue. 18,1914.
Application tiled January 24, 1914. Serial No. 814,171.`
To all 'wlmi/1; 'it may concern Y Be it known thatl I, ISABEL EDGAR MA- nAnKEr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon,'have inventedV certain new and useful Improvements inV Reversible Sanitary Mattresses for Invalids, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to certain new and useful in'iprovcments in mattresses which are especially designed for the use of invalids, and the' invention primarily has for its object to provide a mattress that can be used on the ordinary type oi. bed without any reconstruction of the bed or of the bed springs` and in its generic nature, the invention provides a mattress having an opening througl'i the samegthe mattress being` covered hy a sheet of rubber or other suitable material, which sheet has a pocket that conforms to and fits within the opening in the mattress, there being?` also provided suitable plugs to tit inthe pocket of the sheet and close the same whereby the upper surface of the, mattress will be substantially flush throughout` one of the plugs being shaped in a manner 'i that. when removed the resultant opening i ll be such as to receive a ,vessel or chamber which is designed to fit therein.
In its more subordinate nature,'the invention provides means for preventing spreading of the mattress around the opening, means for retaining the sheet in place and such other details of construction, ar rangement and combination of parts, as will provide a ready and convenient. assemblage of partsV so that the vessel 'or chamber may be put into position, or removed and the corresponding plug inserted without disturbiner the position of the patient 0n the hed.
In its further detailed nature, the invention also includes those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement ofthe reinforcing frames.` Fig. 5 is a det-ail perspective view of a vessel or chamber adapted for use in connection with my invention. Fig. (i is a detail perspectwe view of the plug which is used to till up the chamber or vessel space when the vessel has been removed. vFigs. T and 8 are detail perspective views ofthe wedge plugs that cooperate with the plugr shown in Fig. 6, or the chamber shown in Fig. 5. v
[n the accompanyingndrawing, in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, A rep; reseuts the mattress which is provided with a. suitablyl located opening of suitable dimensions, the mattress around the opening, being reinforced by frames 1 2 that are embedded in the mattress structure.
3 designates a sheet of rubber. or other suitable material, which is extended transversely over the top of the mattressand upon the sides thereof, the sheet 3 being secured in place by suitable strap fastening devices The sheet 3 is provided with 'a pocket 3? shaped to closely conform to the dimensions of the mattress opening, the bottom of the pocket 3 lying substantially in the same plane as the bottom of the mattress, the sheet and pocket 3 forming, as it were. a santiary guard for-the mattress structure. I
8 is a wedge or filler block constructed of substantially the vsame material as the mattress, and the block 8 is adapted to fit into the pocket 3a and cooperate with a second wedge filler bloclr- 9 that is also constructed of substantially the same material as the mattress, and lies in the pocket 3 above the block 8.
10 is a filler block, that conforms generally in shape to the chamber or vessel 6, which is adapted to 'be located in thc pocket 3a. infconnection with the lfiller blocks 8--9, as shown in Fig. 3, it being understood that the plug or block l() is employed when the vessel 6 is not inv use. The plug 10 and filler blocks 8 9 are preferably provided with a cover' ing of rubber cloth or other suitable fluidproof material so that they may be washed should occasion require. The chamber or vessel 6 is of the ordinary construction' e-xcepting that it is provided with a ring or flange 7 that is fitted into the top of the vessel and is provided witha guard or lip 7 to direct the matter into the vessel '6 and revent its spilling over and 'soiling the ed vdisclosed is the preferred one, although clothes, as will be clear to those sltilled'in the l art. It will be. noticed that the plug has i its deeperl end curved to conform toV the curvature of the vessel G or ol the plug l0, as the ease may be, sothat when the vessel 6 is in position, as shown in Fig. 3, the plug 9 will, by engaging the vessel, serve to lock the vessel G in place, as it were, to prevent its accidental displacement.
By my construction, it will be observed, that the mattress is readily reversible and in order to reverse the mattress, the sheet 3 is removed, the mattress turned over, and the sheet 3 placed on the new upper` side.
In practice, in order to locate the vessel 6 in the pocket 3, after the plug 10 is removed, it is, only necessary to draw up the wedge 9` It is not necessary to remove the wedge block 8 unless it is desired' to turn over the mattress.
From the foregtfmg description, taken in connection /with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that the (complete construction, uses and advantages of my invention will be clear to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and I desire it under. stood tbatthe form of the invention herein slight changes in the details ofconstruetion and arrangement of parts may` be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention or' the scope of the appended claims.
That I claim is: I
1. A mattress haring an op'u through the' same, n sheet secured over the matti-elf y and haring a pocket substantially conform i jing to the dimensions of said opening, a set Vand haring a potl filler members including a pair of le Wedge blocks resting 'one on tbe other and :l member of cylindrv mattr ha the sai l i ria-e nl ss `u. autially ronlorming to the dimensions of .id opening, a set of filler members located in said pocket, said filler members including removable biocks 4resting one on the other, and a member of cylindrical form.
3. A mattress having an opening through the same, a sheet secured over thev mattress and having a pocket substantiallyv fonl`orining to the dimensions of said opening, a set of filler members located in said pocket, said filler members including removable blocks made of resilient material and resting one on the other, and a member of cylindrical form.
-l. A mattressK hm. ing an opening through the saine, a sheet secured over the mattress and having a prfrkct substantially conforming to the dimensions et' said opening, a set f filler members located in said pocket, said filler members including removable wedge blocks made of resilient material and resting one on the other, 4and a member of eylindrical form.
ln testimony whereof, I have hereunto `set my hand in the presence et' two subseribiug witne i 2n si in inlener. Uoutvrmn linnn.'
