REMOVABLE DISPLAY-LID.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914.
Application filed August 1, 1913. Serial No. 782,498.
To all whom it may concern Be it'known that I, PII'IIJI A. Bne'unu, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of ln'ooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Removable Display-Lids, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to a class of lids, or devices adapted to be used in conjunction with cigar boxes, or the like.
My invention has for its object primarily to provide a display lid designed to be applied especially upon forms of cigar boxes having the side walls of the body thereof projecting some distance above the front wall, and wherein is employed a frame provided with a filler adapted to be seated upon the top edge of the front wall of the box between its upwardly projecting side walls, whereby air, or dust may be prevented from damaging the contents by passing through the space between the front wall and the display lid when positioned upon the open top of the box.
Another object of the invention is to arrange the filler whereby it may serve as a retainer for holding a transparent plate in the frame of the lid; and still another object of the invention is to provide a form of frame having a depending flange with a flared marginal edge for permitting the frame to be freely guided over the top of the box as well as closely fitting the walls of the box when closed thereupon.
A further object of the invention is to provide a plurality of prongs which may be struck out of the depending flange and disposed inwardly thereof for supporting the transparent plate in the frame as occasion requires.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly broken away, of one form of display lid embodying my invention as applied to a cigar box. Fig 2 is a fragmentary view, showing in detail, a front eleva tion of the display lid. Fig. 3 is a fragmentaryview, showing in detail, a front elevation of a slightly different form of the display lid. Fig. t is a fragmentary view, showing in detail, still another form of the display lid. Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary section, taken on the line .l-l of Fi 1. Fig. (3 is an enlarged fragmentary section, taken on the line II-II of Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is an enlarged fragmentary section, taken on the line ILL-Ill of Fig. 3. Fi 8 is an enlarged fragmentary section, taken on the line IlV-1V of Fig. if, and Fi 9 is a section taken on the line V--V of Fi 1.
The removable display lid has a frame 10 adapted to be movably applied upon the open top of preferably well-known forms of cigar boxes the bodies of which are made with side walls 11 and 1). 'of greater widths than the front wall 13 so that the upper edges of said side valls extend some distance above the front wall. A space, as 14, is thereby provided above the upper edge of the front wall 13, and between the projecting portions of ,he side walls 11 and 12, and in this space seated the hinged lid 15 of th box, when closed thereupon.
The frame 10 has side walls 16 and 17 and a front wall 18, each of which is substantially the shape of an inverted L, as viewed in cross-secti0n, whereby a top flange 19 and a depending flange 20 are provided. By providing the side walls and the front wall of the frame of this form, the frame is susceptible of being made to fit over the top edges of the side walls and the front wall of the box in a manner so that the depending llanges 20 of the frame will be in close movable engagement with the walls of the box when the frame is closed thereon, and to permit the frame to be guided to a closed position upon the body of a box without contacting with the upper edges of its walls the free edge of the depending flange 20 of the side walls and the front walls of the frame is flared outwardly, as at 21.
Serving to prevent the contents of the box being damaged by contact with air, or dust passing through the space 11; under the dc pending flared flange 20 when the fraine is closed upon the box, upon the inner surface of said flange is provided a filler, as 9.2. The filler 22 may be in the form of a rod, as 23 Fig. 1, which is adapted to rest upon the top edge of the front wall of the body of the box, and said rod is of sufficient length to fill the space 1i between the side walls of the box. In Fig. 3 is shown the filler as being formed by vertically slitting the depending flange 20 of the front wall of the frame adjacent to its ends, and curving, as at 24:, the part of the flange between the slits inwardly of the frame so as to fill the space 14 similarly to the rod 23. In Fig. 4 is illustrated. the filler as being provided by longitudinally indenting inwardly a part, as 25, of the depending flange 20 so that the indented portion will closely fill the space 14 of the body of the box when the frame is closed on the box. The filler 22 of the frame of the display lid may also serve as a retainer for holding a plate of glass, or other transparent material, as 26, in the frame 10. In forming the frame 10 the filler, or retainer 22 is provided by being spaced from the top flange 19 of the front wall 18 of the frame so that when the plate is fit-ted in the frame the front edge thereof will be seated in the space between the filler and said top flange. The transparent plate 26 may then be fastened against accidental displacement in the frame 10 by a bar, or strip, as 27, which is substantially U-shaped in cross section, and which is disposed in straddle arrangement on the rear edge of the transparent plate, and then soldered, or otherwise secured. to the ends of the side walls of the frame which are opposite to the front wall.
In conjunction with the employment of the filler, or retainer 22, I may use a plurality of retainers, or prongs, as 28, or in some forms of the display lid the filler 22 may be dispensed with and the prongs used instead. The retainers, or prongs 28 are preferably provided by slitting in a V-shape suitable portions of the depending flange 20 of one, or more of the walls of the frame, and then bending the prongs inwardly of the frame so as to be spaced from the top flanges 19 of the walls thereof. By arranging the transparent plate in the frame so as to rest upon the prongs the plate will be secured therein for use in displaying the contents of the box.
The frame 10 and its transparent plate may be applied to a cigar box so as to be swung to open, or closed positions upon the open top of the body of the box by any suitable means, for instance by two sleeves, as 29 and 30, which are preferably alike in formation. Each of the sleeves 29 and 30 are substantially U-shaped, and said sleeves may be soldered, or otherwise held to either the bar 27, or to the ends of the side walls 16 and 17 which are opposite to the front Wall 18 of the frame 10-. The sleeves 29 and 30 are sufficiently spaced apart to permit the side edges of the lid 15 of the box to be guided therein when the display lid is positioned at the top of the lid of the box, and is then directed downwardly to the lower part thereof. The display lid will thereby be arranged upon the open top of the body of the box for being swung to open, or closed positions when the lid of the box is manually moved in alternate directions lmckwardly, or forwardly with relation to the body of the box.
in the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modi tications may be made therein without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent i v 1.. In a display lid for a box provided with a hinged lid. and a recess in the upper edge of the front wall and the rear wall of the box, the combination of a rectangular frame having three closed sides and an open. rear side, the closed sides of said frame comprising a plate adapted to rest upon the top of the box, with an integral substantially Sshaped flange depending from said plate, and the upper recess thereof serving as a groove for reception of a trans parent plate, and the lower curved portion of said flange serving as a guide whereby the frame may be freely directed downwardly over the edge of the box, and the rear or fourth side of said frame comprising a plate substantially the same as the top plate of the closed sides, said frame having two upwardly directed channeled members adapted to detachably and slidingly engage the side edges of the lid of the box, whereby the display lid may be swung to an open or closed position on the box when the box is swung accordingly.
2.
