To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMPSON P. JARVIS, a citizen of the United States,residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in oil burners, and more particularly to that type of burner which may be readily swung into position into the firebox or removed therefrom for cleaning or repairing.
The invention is adapted for use in fireboXes or grates generally, and is particularly adapted for employment. in connection with bakers ovens where a burner which will be clean, safe, will burn without soot or smell, and which may be readily removed, if desired.
lVith the above mentioned and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
Referring to the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved oil burner. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the inner swiveled connection which is retained in position by the supporting plate. Fig. 3 is a similar view or the swiveled connection supporting the nozzle, disclosing the needle valve controlling the flow of oil. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 4:-4: of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views-1 indicates an elongated swivel joint tapered at its opposite ends and provided in its interior with the chambers 2 and 3, which communicate respectively at their inner ends with the air and oil pipes 4 and 5, through which air and oil is forced under pressure. Suitable castings 6 and 7 are positioned over and are adapted to rotate on the opposite tapered ends of the swivel joint and said castings are retained in position to provide a tight joint by the nuts 8 and 9 which are threaded over the threaded studs 10 and 11. A bracket 12 provided with angularly disposed arms 13 is secured to a suitable support, preferably at one side of the opening through which the burner is to be inserted, and said bracket mounts the swivel joint. The arms 13 are formed with suitable bolt openings through which pass the bolts 14: which are screwed into the studs 10 and 11. The castings 6 and 7 are provided with tubular outlets 15 and 16, and said outlets communicate through the annular channels 15' and 16 with the openings 17 and 18 which commuuicate respectively with the chambers 2 and Suitable pipes 19 and 20 are threaded into the tubular outlets of the castings 6 and 7 and said pipes carry on their outer ends corresponding castings 2]. and 2-2 which are fitted over the oppositely tapered ends of a swivel joint 23, and are retained thereon to form a tight joint by the nuts 24:, which are threaded over studs 25 projecting from the ends of the swivel joint. The interior of the swivel joint is formed with the oil and air chambers 26 and 27, provided adjacent their outer ends with openings 28 and 29, which communicate through the annular channels 30 and 31 in the respective castings 21 and 22 with the pipes 19 and 20.
It will be apparent that by forming the castings with annular channels to cooperate with the swivel joint that a communication will at all times be established between the interior of the chambers and the pipes associated with the castings. An air pipe 32 is threaded into a nipple 33 projecting outwardly from the swivel joint and said pipe communicates at its inner end with the air chamber 27 and carries at its outer end a nozzle 34 provided with an outlet 35. An oil pipe 36 of smaller diameter than the air pipe is mounted longitudinally therein and the same extends to the nozzle and is mounted at its inner end in an opening 37 in the dividing wall 38 and which opening communicates with the interior of the chamber 26. The oil flowing through the opening 37 is controlled by a needle valve 38' provided with a threaded stem 39 which operates in a threaded casing 40 and carries on its outer end an operating handle 41. A suitable thimble 42 is slidably mounted on the spray nozzle 34: and may be adjusted thereon to regulate the flare of the flame and said thimble is limited in its movement by a collar 4:3.
It will be apparent that the burner has a double swivel support which permits the same to be directed as desired, and is capable of ready insertion into or removal from a fire box or bakers oven, and by mounting the burner on the end of a single pipe a less opening is required in the furnace door than with the structures now employed. A handle 44L extends from. the rear of the swivel joint 23 above the needle valve, and the same assists in the manipulation of the burner.
By constructing my device as above de scribed, it will be observed that the swivel joints 1 and 23 are duplicate castings finished slightly different, and the castings fitted over the tapered ends thereof are duplicates, only of different size, and this form of construction enables the device to be constructed more cheaply than where parts are not interchangeable and provides a device the parts of which may be readily replaced when worn or easily renewed when broken.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is A burner of the class described, the same comprising a hollow swivel union tapered toward its opposite ends, a bracket supporting said union at its opposite ends, hollow castings fitted over the tapered ends of said union, said union formed on its interior with separate chambers, an air feed pipe and an oil feed pipe each communicating with one of said chambers and through which the air and oil are forced under pressure, a communication between each of said castings and one of said chambers, a pair of air and oil pipes secured to said castings, a pair of hollow castings carried by the other ends of said pipes, a hollow swivel union tapered toward its opposite ends and over which said. castings are fitted, said union formed on its interior with separate chambers, each communicating with one of said castings, an air discharge pipe carried by said union and extending therefrom in a plane at right angles to the axis of rotation of said union, said pipe communicating at its inner end with the chamber connected to said air supply pipe, a burner carried at the outer end of said pipe, an oil discharge pipe of a diameter smaller than said air discharge pipe and mounted within the same and extending longitudinally thereof, said pipe at its inner end communicating with'the chamber connected to said oil supply pipe and communieating at its outer end with said burner, and a valve for controlling the communication between the chamber connected to said oil supply pipe and said oil discharge pipe.
