LEVER-SOCKET LIFTING-J'ACKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914;.
Application filed August 14, 1912. Serial No. 715,043;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAIAH E. HINDMAN, a resident of Grafton, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lever-Sockets for Lifting-Jacks, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a lever socket embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the head member removed.
My invention has relation to lever sockets for lifting jacks, and is designed to provide a simple two-part socket member, in which the part which carries the pawls and trunnions, and which is exposed to the greatestwear, is capable of being readily removed and replaced. My invention also provides the twopart lever socket of this character having a novel form of connection between the two parts thereof, whereby they are normally securely united, but are capable of ready separation.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown the preferred embodiment thereof, and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that the invention is susceptible of various changes in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates the socket member of the two-part socket, and 3 the detachable head which carries the trunnions 4 upon which the lever is fulcrumed, and which also carries seats 5 for the jack-actuating pawls.
The head member 3 is formed with the straight relatively short narrow shank 6 at its inner end, said shank having the straight rear face 7, which is continued at 8 to form the front wall of a recess 9 in the other end portion of the head, the outer wall of said recess being formed by the hook member 10, having the straight end face 11.
The end of the socket member is formed with a recess 12 to receive the shank 6, this recess having the straight rear wall 13, continued at 14 to form the front wall of a be clearly apparent from Fig. 1. The adjacent straight faces of the two members are preferably formed with a key-way, formed half in one member and half in the other, to receive a retaining key 17.
Substantially all the wear in service comes upon the head member 3. My invention provides means whereby this head member can be formed of a more durable kind of metal than the socket member 2. If desired, the socket member 2 can be a casting, while the member 8 may be, for instance, a drop forging. When the member 3 becomes worn to such an extent as to interfere with its proper operation, the key 17 can be readily driven out by the use of a hammer and drift, and a new member can be inserted without the necessity of taking the jack into a shop.
WVhat I claim is 1. A lever socket for jacks, comprising a socket member and a head member, the socket member having a seat, there being a recess in the socket member above said seat, the head member having a seating face engaging the seat on the socket member, said head member extending across the entire face of the socket member, the head member having a tongue within the recess above the seat on the socket member, and a pin engaging both of said members for securing them in position with relation to each other, substantially as described.
2. A lever socket for jacks, comprising a socket member and. a head member, each of said members having a tongue and groove, the tongue on the head member engaging the groove in the socket member, while the tongue on thesocket member engages the groove in the head member, and a pin engaging both of said members for securing them to each other; substantially as described.
3. A lever socket for jacks, comprising two members, each member having a longitudinally extending tongue and a longitudinally extending recess, the longitudinally extending tongue of one member fitting the longitudinally extending recess in the other member, there being a semicircular transverse recess in each of said members, and a securing device Within said recesses for holding the two members from movement in a longitudinal direction; substantially as described.
4:. A jack lever, comprising a socket memher and a head member, said socket member having a rearwardly extending groove and a forwardly extending tongue, the head memher having a rearwardly extending tongue and a forwardly extending groove, the tongue on the head member being arranged to be seated in the groove in the socket member while the tongue on the socket member engages the groove in the head member, the head member having a plurality of pawl seats extending across the entire face thereof, each of said members having semi-circle lar recesses in register with each other, and a securing pin within said recesses for retaining the two members in position with relation to each other; substantially as described.
5. A lever socket for jacks, comprising a socket-member and a head member, each of said members having atongue and a groove, the tongue of one member being seated in the groove of the other member, and a locking device engaging both members; substantially as described.
6. A lever socket for jacks, comprising a socket member and a head member, each of said members having atongue and a groove, the tongue of one member being seated in the groove of the other member, said tongues being in diflerent vertical and horizontal planes, and a locking device engaging both members; substantially as described.
lntestimo-ny whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
ISAIAH E. HINDMAN.
