ADJUSTABLE GQUGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914.
Application tiled March 5, 1914. Serial No. 822,709.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALDEN B. J AOKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Gouges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to adjustable gougeS.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a tool of the character named wherein the gouge element can be adjusted to different angles with respect to the handle whereby the usefulness of the tool in constructing core-boxes and in pattern making generally, and in working on moldings, fillets and etc. is materially extended.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of an adjustable gouge constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 with the gouge holder of the tool in an extreme adjusted position; Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4:, a section on the line 4- 1 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the device is shown as comprising a tubular handle 10 having mounted in the bore thereof a metallic tubular member 11 the forward end of which projects beyond the forward end of the handle and has threaded thereon a cap 12 provided with laterally directed ears 13. Pivoted between the ears 13 is the shank 14c of a gouge or tool holder 15 provided Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the with a socket 16 for receiving the stem of a gouge or other tool. Mounted upon the holder 15 is a spring lock 17 including a locking stud 18 working in a recess 19 in the holder 15 and adapted to engage in a recess in the stem of a tool to hold the latter against disengagement from the holder 15. The tubular member 11 is provided with a longitudinal slot 19 disposed exteriorly and forwardly of the handle 10. Mounted in the bore of the tubular member 11 is a rod 20 the forward end of which is connected to the rear end of the shank 1 1 by means of a link 21, said link extending through the slot 19. The rear end of the rod 20 is threaded as at 22 for a purpose that will presently appear. Rotatably mounted on the rear end of the handle 10 is a head 23 in which is mounted a nut 24: engaged on the threads 22.
By this construction it will be obvious that upon rotating the head 23 relatively to the handle 10 the rod 20 will be moved longitudinally relatively to the tubular member 11 and such longitudinal movement of the rod 20 will vary the angularity of the holder 15 and the tool carried thereby with respect to the handle 10.
What is claimed is t In a tool holder, the combination of a tubular handle. a tool holder pivoted on the forward end of said handle, a rotatable head mounted on the rear end of the handle, a rod disposed in the bore of the handle and having threaded engagement with said head whereby the rotation of the latter will move the rod longitudinally, and connections between the forward end of the rod and the tool holder whereby the longitudinal move ment of the rod will vary the angularity of the tool holder with respect to the handle.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
ALDEN B. JACKSON.
