Specification of Letters Patent.
MILKING-STOOL.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914,
Application filed DeeembcriLiQlffi. Serial No. 805,997.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, ALEXANDER J. Hoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muscoda, in the county of Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milking- Stools; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in milking stools and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having simple and efficient means for preventing the cow from switching her tail in the face of the milker.
With the above objects in View, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved milking stool; Fig. 2 is a front end elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan view; Fig. 4 is an elevation of a portion of the up per end of the foot guard and the lower end of the tail guard; and Fig. 5 is a vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
1n the embodiment illustrated, my improved milking stool is shown as comprismg, in general, a seat 1, a pail rest 2, a foot guard 3, and a tail guard 4. The seat 1 and the pail rest 2 are supported by side members 5 preferably formed of single bars of metal bent to provide front and rear supporting legs 6 and 7 respectively, horizontal seat supports 8 having their forward ends bent slightly downward and bars 9 which incline upwardly from the upper ends of the front legs 6 to the downturned portions of the seat supporting bars 8. The legs 6 and 7 are provided with lateral feet 10 which are bolted or riveted to runners 11.
The pail rest above referred to, is here shown in the form of a three sided pan, its bottom resting on the bars 9 and the upper edges of its side walls 12 lying substantially in a horizontal plane. Secured by bolts or rivets 13 to one of the runners 11 and one side 12 of the pail rest 2, is the upright foot guard 23 above referred. to. This guard is shown as in the form of a flat board, jits edges tapering slightly at its upper end, said board being provided with a vertical slot 14.
The tail guard 4 is provided with a T- head 15 and a laterally curved shank 16, the two being preferably formed of a single piece of rather stiff wire bent to form the head 15 coiled to form the shank 16 and having its opposite ends 17 projecting through openings 18 in the upper end of a standard 19. A rivet or bolt 20 is then passed through the standard 19 at a point above the openings 18 and through the coils forming the shank 16 thus rigidly securing said shank on said standard. As clearly shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 5, the lower end of the standard 19 is turned inwardly to form a foot 21 which is of a width to freely slide within the slot 14 and above this foot 21 a thumb nut 22 passes through a washer 23 and the slot 14 and is threaded into the standard 19. By this construction, I am enabled to adjust the tail guard 4 ina Vertical plane for obvious reasons.
1n the operation of the device, the milk pail is placed upon the pail rest 2, the tail guard 4 is adjusted to the proper height and the entire stool may then be moved upon its runners 11 until the foot guard 3 is directly in front of the right hind foot of the cow. When in this position, the milker sits upon the seat 1 and his weight will hold the entire stool in a rigid position. If now, the cow should kick, her foot would strike the guard 3 and the blow would be checked, without any mishap to the milk pail or the milker. If she should switch her tail to the side on which the stool is placed, she could not lash the milkers face on account of the disposition of the tail guard 4. Thus it will be seen that I have produced a very simple, eflicient and convenient milking stool having several advantageous features. By the connections bet-ween the standard 19 and the foot guard 3, I may quickly and easily remove said standard and the tail guard 4 but the foot guard 3 will still remain in the same relative position.
Although I have described my invention with. considerable minuteness, I do not wish to be limited to details of construction other than those elaborated in the appended claims.
What I claim as'my invention is:
,1. A milking stool including a supporting structure and a T-headed tail guard adjustably and removably carried thereby.
2. The combination With a supporting structure, an upright longitudinally slotted member secured to said structure, a standard adjustably mounted in the slot of said member and provided with means for secur- 7 ing it in adjusted position, said standard having openlngs 1n lts upper end, a T- sl aped tail guard secured in the openings of said standard and composed of a single piece of stiff Wire bent to form a loopshaped head of the T and twisted to form a shank, the free ends of the Wire extending my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
