UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN rnannm EWELL, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOIB. IO BARBEI'I irannrac- TUBING comramr, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A conrona'rron orwEsr ,vmcmm mnanonr roe TANK-CARS.
Speciiication of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 11, 1914,
Original application filed February 18, 1914, Serial No. 818,599. Divided and thisappiication filed April 13, 1914. Serial No. 831,464.
To all whom it'may concern Be it known that I, JOHN FRANKLIN Ewan a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented my said invention, taken in connection with Ill It is the object of the present invention in general to provide an underframing which will embody suflicient strength and rigidity to withstand the strains and stresses peculiar to tank cars, and particularly a bolster I for such a framing.
Inthe drawings already; referredtogvhich.
serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 isa fragmentary top plan view of one end of a tank car underframing constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2-is a fragmentary side elevation thereof with a portion of the tank in place. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the improved bolster bein a section taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 2. *ig. 4 is a vertical section taken along line 4-4 of Fig. '2.
Like parts are designated by corresponding characters or symbols in all the figures of the drawings.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, A designates generally a girder which extends throughoutthe entire length of the car. Secured to the top face of this girder A, adjacent to each terminal thereof, is a transverse channel bar 10 in which is seated a timber saddle 11. The outer ends of the said channel bars 10 carry a running board 12 on-each side of the tank 13 seated on the saddle timbers 11.
The bolster structure, hereinbefore referred to, comprises a channel bar l isecured' transversely to the underside of the girder A adjacent its terminal and directly be; neath channel bar 10. The. central portion 14 of the channel bar 14 is normally hori-' zontal and is rigidly fixed to the-girder A;
while the terminals 14 thereof are inclined upwardly. A channel post 15 is secured to each end 14" of the channel bar 14 by the angle iron 16 at its lower terminal. The upperend of each of the posts is attached to the channel bar 10 by means of the gusset plates 17 which are riveted to each flangeof said channel bar. Outwardly extending: diagonal channel struts 18 extend from the. Webs of the girder A near the lower ends thereof to the channel bar 10. At their upper terminals these strutslS areksecured to the gusset plates-17 and at theirlower ends to the girder ;A by means-of the angle irons 19..
A bolster block 20 is inserted intoand secured to the horizontal portion 14 or the channel bar 14. This bolster block ispierced by trunnion opening 21 in which the trun-' nion of the truck (not showni is arranged to swivel.
An inverted channel section 22.55 riveted ad acent to the extreme end of each portion 14 of the ,channelbar 1 4; and 'constitufie sidebearings or outriders for the true (not shown),
As the drawings only illustrate one end of the car it is manifest that the bolster structure is merely duplicated at the other end of lower channel.
2. An underbody comprising a longitudinal girder, a transverse channel bar fixed to the upper face thereof, adjacent each end of said girder, a tank saddle l in said channel, a transverse channel'bar' fixed to nel bar fixed to the upper face thereof, ad-
jacent each end of said girder, a tank saddle lodged in said channel bar, a transverse channel bar fixed tothe lower face of said girder underneath of and of shorter length than said upper channel, members connecting the ends of said lower channel with said upper channel intermediate the ends thereof, runways connecting the outer ends of said upper channels, and a bolster block fixed in'said lower channel.
4. An underbody comprising a longitudinal box girder, a horizontal transverse channel bar fixed to the upper face thereof, adjacent each end of said girder, a tank saddle lodged in said channel bar, a transverse channel bar fixed to the lower face of said girder underneath of and of shorter length than said upper channel, members connecting the ends of said lower channel with said upper channel intermediate the ends thereof, there being diagonal members extending from said upper channel, contiguous to said connecting members, to the webs of said girder adjacent the lower flanges thereof, runways connect the outer ends of said channels, and a. b0 ster block fixed in said lower channel.
5. An under-body comprising a longitudinal box girder, a horizontal transverse channel bar fixed to the upper face thereof, adjacent each end of said girder, a tank saddle lodged in said channel bar, a transverse channel bar fixed to the lower face of said girder underneath of and of shorter length than said upper channel, the ends of said lower channel being bent upwardly, connecting members extending'normally from said channel at its ends to said upper channel intermediate the ends thereof, runways connecting the outer ends of said upper channels, and a bolster block fixed in said lower channel.
6. An underbody comprising a longitudinal box girder, a horizontal transverse channel bar fixed to the upper face thereof, adjacent each end of said girder, a tank saddle lodged in said channel bar, a transverse channel bar fixed to the lower face of said girder underneath of and of shorter length than said upper channel, the ends of said lower channel being bent upwardly, connecting members extending normally I from said channel at its ends to said upper channel, intermediate the ends thereof, there being diagonal members extending from said upper channel, contiguous to said connecting members, to the webs of said girder adj aoent the lower flanges thereof, runways connecting the outer ends of sald channels, and a bolster block fixed in said lower channel.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN FRANKLIN EWELL.
In the presence of- Rmnmxn MACKAY,
C. S. STARK.
