TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-VVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to line spacing mechanism for typewriting machines and its principal object is to provide new and improved mechanism of the character specified.
To the above and other ends, my invention consists in the features of construction, combinations of devices, and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing which illus trates one form of my invention, Figure 1 is a fragmentary planview of one end of a platen carrier and a platen showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on a vertical plane indicated by the dotted line 00 in Fig. 1 and looking in the direction ofthe arrow at said line, the ratchet wheel being shown in dotted lines and the mounting of the platen carrier also being shown. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of part of the line spacingmechanism. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are fragmentary operating views of some of the parts looked at as in Fig. 2.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, the main frame of the machine comprises a top plate 1 having a depressed portion or trough 2 wherein are secured oppositely grooved guide rails 3 which cooperate through antifri-ction balls 1 with the opposite grooved faces of a slide bar 5 comprised in a platen frame or carriage, which further includes end bars 6 and a connecting cross bar or rod 7. The end bars provide bearings for the axle 8 of a rotary platen 9, said axle being provided with the usual knobs or finger wheels 10. Operatively connectedwith the right-hand end of the platen is a line spacing ratchet wheel 11 with the top of which engages a roller detent 12 mounted on a I opening.

Extending rightward from the rightaxle and at right angles to the platen axle which is horizontal, the pivot being also to the right of the ratchet wheel 11, which in turn is at the right-hand end of the platen and is in a vertical fore and aft plane. V
The pawl carrier in the present instance is in the form of a one-piece bell crank lever, indicated as a whole by the numeral 19, the longer arm 20 whereof extends forward under the platen axle and inclines slightly upward to fully clear the top plate, terminating at its free end in a finger portion 21. The arm, handle or hand piece 20 extends from and is integral with a hub portion 22 which is best shown in Fig. 3, said hub portion being formed with a vertical bearing opening 23 to fit over and bear on the pivot screw 18. The shorter arm 24 of the bell crank 19 extends horizontallyinward toward the ratchet wheel 11, terminating behind the same. At the free end of the shorter arm 24 is a vertically disposed extension or abutment 25 which is adapted to cooperate with the ratchet wheel at its rear and under side to limit the operating movemeet of the pawl carrier or bell crank 19, the latter swingingin a substantially horizontal path from left to right, transversely of the plane of the ratchet wheel 11. A
coiled restoring spring 26 is hooked at itsforward end into nicks or depressions 27 on the abutment 25, the rear end of said spring being anchored to a pin 28 on the end bar 6 (Fig. 2). This spring returns the pawl carrier and parts mounted thereon from right to left to normal position after operation and normally maintains the arm 20 engaged with a resilient stop 29 of rubber or the like projecting outward from the end bar 6 (Fig. 1). The arm 24 provides a support for a vertically disposed pawl 30 which is pivoted on a horizontal pivot screw 31 to the forward face of the arm 24:, said pawl extending inward along said arm and being formed on its free end with a tooth 32 which is adapt-ed to engage with the teeth of the ratchet wheel at the under side thereof but normally is separatedtherefrom.

The upward movement of the pawl is limited by a regulating device, which in the present instance is in the form of a horizontally movable lever 35 pivoted on a vertical screw 36 to the top of the arm 24:. The lever 35 has an outward extending finger piece which is readily accessible from behind the hub of the carrier, said finger piece forming one arm of said lever 35. The other arm 38 of the lever 35 is bent'to provide stop portions or devices 39 and 40 for cooperation with the upper faceof the pawl 30.-
- The stop faces or devices 39 and 40 are at differentheights or elevations, the stop 39 being lo wer than the stop 40, as is apparent from Fig. 2, and as will be clearly understood from a comparison of Figs. 1L and 5. When the'regulatoror lever 35 is positioned, as in Fig. 4, the stop portion 39 will overhe the pawl 30, which will bemaintained by -its spring 33 normally engaged there with. By pressing the finger piece 37 rear ward the lever 35 may be swung on its pivot to'carrythe sto portion 39 forward out of engagement with the pawl 30 and to bring the stop portion 4:0 vertically over the same as in Fig. 5. This permits the spring 33 to swing the pawl upward into engagement with the stop portion l0 so that the tooth 32 is normally higher. The portion of the arm 38, which joins the stop portions a line spacing operatiomengage with the' proper' 39 and 40, is inclined sothat it may act as a cam on the pawl 30, the result be ing that when the finger piece 37 is pulled forward to its first position the pawl 30 will be forced downward until it is again in the Fig; 3 position. It will be seen that the regulator 35 and the spring 33 provide in combination means for variably regulating and setting the normal height of the pawl tooth 32. A The purpose and effect of this variation in the normal location of the pawltooth will be understood from a comparison of Figs. 45 and 5.

It may be stated that in the; present instance the resistance of the spring mounted detent 12.issuch that the line spacing may be effected prior to the beginning of the return movement of the carriage. As a result of engaging with the tooth a, of the ratchet wheel the pawl tooth 32 will, when the parts are arrested as in Fig. 6 by engagement of the abutment 25 with the ratchet wheel 11, have turned or advanced the platen a unit of line space distance as measured by the distance from one tooth to another of the ratchet wheel 11 under control of the spring mounted roller detent 12. When the pawl tooth 32 is set, as in Fig. 5,it will under a line spacing operation be swung forward to engage with the tooth b of the line spacing wheel, which is the next tooth in rear of the tooth a, and as a consequence the platen will be advanced two units of line space distance, as measured by the space between one tooth of theratchet wheel 11 and the second tooth following. lVhether advanced a distance of one or two teeth the ratchet wheel and pawl will be in the relation shown in Fig. 6 when the parts are arrested by the engagement of the abutment 25 with said ratchet wheel. The difference in extent of line spacing advance corresponds, it will be perceived, to the difference in the extent of the lost motion beratchet wheel with which it engages. In

It will be observed that by my present invention a line spacing mechanism is provided which while highly efficient is extremely simple in construction and compar atively cheapto manufacture; .The working arts aside from the s rin 's are onl three, namely, the pawl carrier or lever 19, the pawl 30 and the regulator 35. Two of theseparts, the pawl and the regulator, are mounted on the third part, as is also the pawl spring 33. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a connected line spacing wheel, a pawl carrier pivoted on a vertical axis in rear of the platen axis, a pawl pivoted on said carrier, said pawl having a hori zontal axis of rotation, and a device on said carrier for regulating normally the vertical position of the engaging tooth of said pawl.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing ratchet wheel. connected thereto, a hand operated pawl carrier arranged under the platen axle and pivoted to swing in a path substantially parallel thereto, and a pawl on said carrier variably settable in a vertical plane to vary the effective stroke of said pawl, said pawl being adapted to cooperate with. said ratchet wheel but being normally separated therefrom.
8. line space ratchet wheel arranged at the right of said platen and operatively connected thereto, a pawl carrier pivoted on a vertical axis, said axis being to the right oi said ratchet wheel and in rear of the platen axle, said pawl carrier being provided with a portion extending forward under the platen axle and terminating in a finger piece, a pawl mounted on said pawl carrier at the left of its axis, said pawl having a tooth cooperative with the under side of said ratchet wheel, and a line space regulator mounted on said pawl carrier and cooperative with said pawl to maintain it normally at predetermined heights.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carrier, a platen thereon, line space ratchet wheel arranged at the right of said platen and operatively con nected thereto, a pawl carrier pivoted on a vertical axis to the right of said ratchet wheel and in rear of the platen axle, said pawl carrier being provided with a forward extension underlying the platen axle and terminating in a finger piece, pawl pivoted on said pawl carrier at the left of its axis and having a tooth cooperative with the under side of said ratchet wheel, a spring secured to said pawl carrier and tending constantly to swing said pawl upward on its pivot, and a regulating lever for said pawl pivoted on said pawl carrier to swing in a horizontal plane and having arresting portions at predetermined heights,

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing ratchet wheel connected thereto, a hand operated pawl carrier having a handle portion arranged under the platen axle and pivoted to swing in a path substantially parallel thereto, a pawl on said carrier pivoted to swing in a vertical path, said pawl he aitlapted to cooperate with said ratchet wheel but be ing normally separated therefrom, and means for limiting the extent of operative movement of said pawl C211,l1.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen, a line spacing ratchet wheel'connected thereto, a hand operated 1 pawl carrier having a hand. portion arranged under the platen axle and swingable in a path substantially parallel. thereto, a pawl on said carrier movable in a vertical plane, said pawl being adapted to cooperate with said ratchet wheel but being normally separated therefrom, and an abutment on said pawl carrier adapted to cooperate with said line spacing wheel to limit the opera- 1 tive movement of said carrier.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carrier, a platen thereon, a line spacing ratchet wheel connected to said platen, a hand operated pawl carrier provided with an integral finger piece and pivoted to swing transversely of said ratchet wheel, a pawl pivoted directly on said carrier to swing in a path substantially at right angles tothe plane of movement of said carrier, a pawl regulator on said carrier for varying the normal height of the pawl tooth, a sto on said platen frame, a spring connected with said pawl carrier and normally maintaining it against said stop, and a second stop on said pawl carrier cooperative with said ratchet wheel for limiting the operative movement of aid carrier.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carrier, a platen thereon, a line spacing ratchet wheel connected to said platen, a bell crank lever pivoted on said platen carrier and having avertical axis'of rotation, a pawl pivoted directly on said bell crank and adapted to swing in a substantially vertical path, said pawl cooperating with said ratchet wheel, a line space regulator cooperative with said pawl.
to vary its action on said ratchet wheel, said regulator being pivoted directly on said bell crank lever, a pawl spring, and a lever returning pring connected to said lever and to said platen carrier.
12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a platen carrier, a platen thereon,
' a line spacing ratchet wheel connected to said platen, a bell crank pivoted on said platen carrier and having a vertical axis of rotation, the longer arm of said bell crank extending forward and terminating in a finger piece, a line spacing pawl cooperative with said ratchet wheel, said pawl being pivoted to the shorter arm of said bell crank and having ahorizontal axis of rotation, a line space regulator mounted on the shorter arm of said bell crank, a pawl spring m'onnt ed on the shorter arm of said bell crank, and a restoring spring connected to said bell crank and to said platen carrier.
13. In a typewriting machine, th combination of a platen carrier, a platen thereon,
a line spacing ratchet wheel connected to said platen, a bell crank lever pivoted on a detachable vertical pivot pin supported on ears 011 the end bar of said platen carrier, the longer arm of said bell crank lever ex tending forward and being provided with a finger piece, the shorter arm extending inward through an opening in said end bar, a line spacing pawl pivoted to the horter arm of said bell crank lever, a line space regulator mounted on the shorter arm of said bell crank lever, a-pawl springmounted on the shorter arm of said bell crank lever, stops for limiting operativemovements, of said bell crank lever, and a restoring springfor said bell crank lever.

In a typewritin-g machine, the combination of a platen carrier, a platen thereon, a line spacing ratchet wheel connected to said platen, a bell crank lever pivoted on said platen carrier and having a vertical axis of rotation, the longer arm of said bell crank lever extending forward and terminatingin a finger piece, a line spacing pawl cooperative with said ratchet wheel,said pawl being pivoted to the shorter arm of said bell crank lever and having a horizontal axis of rotation, a line space regulator mounted on the shorter arm of said bell crank lever, a spring for said pawlnrounted on the shorter arm of saidbell crank lever,-
an abutment on the shorter arm of Said cell crank lever, said abutment cooperating with, said ratchet wheel to limit operative movem ents of said bell crank lever," and a spring connected at one end to said abutment and at its opposite end to said platen carrier.
