TUEE-EXPANDER.

Specication of Letters Patent. `.Application filed November 1G, 1813.
Patented Aug. 11, 1914 Serial No. 800,110.
To @ZZ 11a/wm er may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM JOSEPH Fnnr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tube-Expanders, of which the following' is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tube expanders, and particularly relates to an auxiliary tool, for use in connection with the ordinary tools now used for expanding tubes (usually in the heads of tubular boilers) whereby, as the expanding apparatus is driven into place to perform its work, the tool which has been used in the next preceding operation is forcibly Withdrawn from the position in which it is seated after expanding the tube.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is an end elevation of a fragment of the head of a tubular boiler, showing the device of my invention in place. Fig. 2 shows the boiler-head and two tubes in place, and the application of the device of myinvention thereto. Fig. 3 is a view in mid-section of the device of my invention, taken on the line of its longest diameter.
As shown in the drawings the boiler-head 4 contains tube-openings 5-5, which are equi-distant from each other, each of the openings 5 being adapted to receive a tube 6, which is expanded at its end, as indicated by the numeral 7 into permanent engage- .ment with the boiler-head 4. The tool by which this expansion is effected comprises a series of expanding members S, secured together by a resilient ring 9, and expanded by means of the driven expanding tool 10. Then this tool has done its work, and the tube-end is expanded, as illustrated in the left-hand portion of Fig. 2, the withdrawal of the expanding tool is frequently attended by ditliculty and delay, and it is this dithculty which my invention is devised and intended to overcome. To that end I provide a. tilting arm 11, each end of which is provided with a cylindrical bore 12, of a diameter sufficient to receive the largest diameter of the driven expanding tool 10, beneath the shoulder 13. The bores 12 incline upwardly with relation to each other (see Fig. 3), and the bottom of the arm 11 is in two planes which meet at an angle at its central median line (see Fig. 3). The arm 11 is mounted on the base plate 14 which has apertures 15--1-5, registering with, and concentric with the bores 12km, (see Fig. 3). The plate 14 is provided with lugs 16-16, between which the arm 11 is pivotally mounted by means of the bolt 17.
The distance between centers of the bores 12-12 and apertures 15- 15 corresponds with the distances between the centers of the openings 5-5 in the boiler-head 4. Therefore, when one tube has been expanded, and the driven tool 10 has been driven into place to the extent of its path of travel, the in- Vward driving of the next driven tool 10 will operate upon the arm 11 to loosen and release the tool which is embraced by the other end of the arm 11, in the manner illustrated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is-
In a tube expander, a tilting arm bored at each end to receive a driven expanding tool; and a base plate, having apertures registering with said bores, whereon the tilting arm is pivotally mounted.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing' witnesses.
WILLIAM J. FRE Y.
