NECK-vomi. t
Specification of Lettdrs Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1914.`
`Application filed Aprn 29, 1914. serial No. 835,185.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GUNDER P. SMAAGAARD, a"citizen of theUnited States, residing at Cerrogordo, in the county of Lac qui Parle and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck- Yokes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention hasfor its object to provide an improved neck yoke, and, to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like `parts throughout the several l views.
- parts being broken away; and Fig. 3 is a view showing the vehicle pole in side elevation and the improved neck yoke applied thereto, in transverse section.
The numeral 1 indicatesA a vehicle pole having the customary metallic pole cap 2,.
with a stop lug 3.
Referring now to the improved neck yoke,
t the numeral 4 indicates a pair of axially alined tubes, spaced apart, at their inner ends. As shown, these tubes 4 are formed from sheet metal, with their longitudinal edges turned outward, to afford depending flanges which are securedA together by rivets; or, if desired, these longitudinal edges may be welded. Telescoped into the outer end of each tube4 is a reinforcing sleeve 5. Collar strap loops 6 are secured, one to each end of the neck yoke. These loops,\as shown are in the form of U-shaped bolts, with their prongs passed transversely through the tubes 4 and sleeves 5, and are secured in position by nuts having screw-threaded en gagement therewith.
Interposed between the spacedinner ends end, upper and lower segmental lugs 9. The inner end portions of the tubes 4 are connected by upper and lower channel straps 10, rigidly secured thereto, as shown, by nut-equipped bolts. These straps 10, at their intermediate portions, are outwardly and transversely bulged, at 12, to receive and hold therebetween the pole socket 7. The head 8 of the pole socket 7 works on segmental surfaces 13 formed on the` outer longitudinal edges of the straps 10, and the segmental lugs 9 work in segmental notches 14 formed in the rear longitudinal edges of said straps. The straps 10, at the segmental notches 14, are, as shown, preferably eX- panded, to afford relatively wide wearing surfaces, on which the lugs 9 work. Obviously, the head 8 and lugs 9 prevent endwise removal of the pole socket fromthe neck yoke, but permit a limited swinging movement of the pole socket longitudinally of the neck yoke. These elements also permit a limited rotary movement of the pole socket, with respect to the neck yoke.
Integrally formed with the lower lug 9 is a clip 15, adapted to interlock with the lug 3 on the pole cap 2, by substantially a quarter turn of the neck yoke in respect to the pole. This clip, when interlocked with the lug 3, Vholds the neck yoke against longitudinal sliding movement on the pole cap 2, but permits a free rotary movement in respect thereto.
What I claim is:
1. A neck yoke comprising a pair of axially alined tubes, a pole socket having at its rear end portion segmental lugs, said pole socket being interposed between the inner ends of said tubes, and upper and lower channel straps connecting said tubes and embracing said pole socket, said straps having in their inner longitudinal edges segmental notches in which said lugs work.
2. A neck yoke comprising a pair of axially alined tubes, a pole socket, having at its forward end a head, and having at its other end upper and lower segmental lugs, said pole socket being interposed between the inner ends of said tubes, and upper and lower channel straps embracing and rigidly secured to the inner end portions of said tubes, said straps being transversely bulged outward to receive' said pole socket between its head and segmental lugs, to hold the same against removal from said straps, said straps having in their inner longitudinal edges segmental notches in which the Segmental lugs of said pole socket Work.
3. A neckyoke comprising a 'pair of axially alined body members, a pole socket,-
havng, at its rear end portion, segmental lugs, said pole socket being interposed be- Y tween the inner ends of said body members,v and upper and lower straps connecting said body members, and embracing said pole socket, said straps having, at `their inner 10 'Copies f this paten'tmay be obtained for ve centsk ea'ch, by'addressin'g the Commissioner ffPaktents, Washington, DfC.
