GEORGE Ll sonnet, or CHICAGQILLINOIS.
Earn-DRYING COMB.
1,166,411. Specifies To all whom it may concern), i
Be it known that I, GEORGE Ia'vSCI-IEEL, a citizen of the United States, anfd-la resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Drying Combs, of Which'the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to combs and more particularly to combs adapted for use in drying hain The object of this improvement is to provide a simple and effective deviceof the character mentioned which is adapted to force Warm air through the points of the teeth of the device through the hair of a person during the operation thereof.
4 Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
Thcinvention will be best understood by accompanying 'clrawing a part of this Specification, and in Which Figure l. is a longitudinal section of .a.
comb embodying my invention, Figs. 2 and 3 are sections taken on lines2-2 and 3-3 respectively in Fig. 1, Fig. at is an enlarged plan view of an insulating plug member used in the construction, and Fig. 5 is a sectime taken on line 5 in Fig. l.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a substantially cylindrical body 6 having one end flaring as at T, and a rubber pumping bulb 8 engaging said flaring end. ln the end of the pumping bulb 8 a cylindrical member 9 carrying a flap valve 10 which is adapted to permit air to enter the bulb 8 through cylindrical member 9 and prevent the air from. passing back through such member.
in one end of the tubular body 6 is thread ed a cap 11 and provided with a recess 11' in its central inner side. Near the laring end '7 of body 6 is formed a spide'r.12.l1av ing a recess 18 formed therein. The recesses 11 and 13 are in axial alinenient with body 6. I
A heating element made up of a stem let of insulating material and a resistance coil 15 are mounted. in the hollow portion of body 6 with the ends of insulating member l t mounted in recesses 11 and 13. 'The terminals of resistance Wire 15 are carried through an insulating block 18 mounted in on of Letters Patent. Application filed February 20, 1914.

a, suitable recess in one SlClGDf hollow body 6 and secured'in metallic members 17, the latter being carried by insulating plug 16. One of the members 17 carries a connecting point 18 by means ofvvhich it is connected to a source o t electricity. The other of carries a knife switch member 19 adapted to engage a lever 20 which is pivoted on a contact member 21, the latter being secured on insulating plug 16; The member 21 carries a point 22 adapted to be connected with a source of electricity. The -lever 20, forming the blade portion of the switch comprising members 19' and 20 carries a finger piece at its outer end and b means-of which it is manually operate The points 18 and 22 are .adapted reform contact members for a conventional connecting lug 24', the latter being connected bf a lamp cord, not shown, or. any other suita le connection With a battery 25 or any other electricity. On one side of said hollow body 6 is a plurality of comb teeth 26; each of said teeth being provided with a perforation 27 extending lon- 'iuulinally thereof from the hollow portion of body 6 to the point of the tooth, and a plurality of passages 28 leading from its "perforatio s? diagonally to the sides thereof providing a plurality of egress passages for the heated air from the comb.
In operation, the connecting plug 24 is connected with the contact points 18 and 22 to connect a source of electricity with the device and the switch arm 20 moved to engagement With contact circuit through the heating element. Air is then pumped through the device by manually squeezing bid 8 to force the air contained in said bulb between the arm portions of spider 12, through body 6, contacting with the heating element comprising members 1 and and through perfora- From this construction then it will be seen that air of ordinary tempcratmres will be received through valve 10 into bulb 8 and heated by means of the heating element and forced out through the teeth 26 into the hair of the perand the member 14 placed in recess 13 and the cap 11 secured points 19 to close the in place bringing its recessll into position to hold the remaining end of the member 14 thereby effecting an easy and efiicient mount precise details of construction set forth, but desire toavail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the kind described comprising a comb having a hollow body with both ends thereof open; a spider in said body near one end thereof and having a 'recess-th'erein; a cap provided with a recess therein and fitted in the other end of said body; and a heating element disposed in said hollow-body and supported in said recesses, substantially as described.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a comb having a hollow body with both ends' thereof open; a spider in said mg for the heating element. 'uThe' ends ofform of constructionfor carrying body near one end thereof and having a re:- cess therein; a cap provided with a recess therein and fitted in the other end of said body; a heating element disposed in said hollow body and supported in said recesses; and air pumping means connected with one end of saidhollow body and adapted to force air over said heating element, substantially as described. I
3.- A device of the kind described comprising a comb having a hollow body with one end of said body open; a spider in said body having a recess opening toward the open end of said body; a cap threaded in said body, there being a recess in said cap opening toward said spider; and a heating element in said body with its ends mounted in said r'ecesses, substantially as described.
1. A' device of the kind described comprising a comb having a hollow body with a lateral opening therein;-an insulating plug in said opening; a wire electrical heating coil in said body with its ends thereof extending through said plug; and means on the outer side of said plug locking the ends of said wire, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.-
