Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 18, 1914. Serial No. 832,859.
To all -uf/mm it may concern.' y
lle it known that l, Hanni' T. Paints', a citizen of the United States of America., ie- `siding at Cuyahoga Falls, inthecounty of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented' certain .new and useful Improvements" in Combined Rail Chairs and Joints, of which the followingvis a specification, reference beingD had therein :to the accompanying dra wing. f
This invent-ionrelates'to a' combined rail chair and joint,'and Vhas for its object to provide a device vof such class, in a 'manner as hereinafter set forth, v.for not only supporting the bases of-a pair of track rails, ibut for further connectingxtlie `opposing ends ofthe trackirails together' without the enf playing of nuts aiidbolts, iatthe .same
,providing forthe necessary contraction and expansion of the track rails, due-,to c'limatic conditions. v
Further objects of the invention are to provide .a combined rail chair and joint, which is simpleinits construction and arrangement,- strong, durable, eflicient and convement-in its.nse, rcadily -set up and comparativelyinexpensive to manufacture.
'.VVith the: foregoing and. otherI objects in view, thelinvention consists, of the Ynovel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter -inore specifically de- I scribed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings,l wherein is shown an embodiment l of the invention, but lit, is to be understoodv that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein likegreference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several viewsz-Fignre 1 is a side elevation of a combined rail chair and joint iii .accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a. plan, partly in section, Fig. 3 is across sectional view, and Figull is a detail of thc removable .splice bar. v
vReferring to thed-rawings in detail, 5 and 6 denot/e apair of track rails, which have" the ends.; thereoff opposing, .and each of said railszincludes a. headf7.web 8 and a base 9. Ther-.web-S of-each rail is provided with aplura'lity-ofopenings 10.
The combined rail chair :aiidjointconsists of a chairplatev l1.1lia'-i'ing depending therefrom a Apair :of longitudinally disposed ribs 12 and 13, constituting reinforcements for the plate 11 and which are arranged between a pair of ties not shown. The chair plate has one longitudinal marginal portion of its upper face providcdwvithv a longitudii'ially disposed and vertically extending flange 14, having theiiineij face thereof underc't 'c-, beveled as at 15., `The chair plate 11 has the' other longitudinal marginal portion of its upper face provided with a longitudinally disposed. vertically `extending flange 16. The flanges 1% and 16 are of greater height than the baseS 9 of the track rails. The c hair plate ll'supports the bases 9 of track rails.
l-'c ed integral with a vportion of the inner face of the flange 16 isa splice bar 17, which opposes one` sidegof the websS of the track rails, engages the upper face of one-side of the bases of the track rails and abuts against the heads '7 of the track rails. The lfish plate 1`7-isprovided on its inner face with integral-lugs 1S, which pro ject into the openings '1 0 of the webs-8.
The reference character 19 denotes' a removable splicefpbar which is opposed against the other sides of the webs 8 of the track Ia-tented'-ug. 4, 1914.
rails, and vabuts against the heads 7 of the track rails and engages the bases. 9` of the track rails` face of the chair plate 11. Y The ontei of the extension v2O isbeveled as at 21'and furthermore provided with teeth 22.
lVhen the track rails are mounted upon the chair` plate 11, the longitudinal ledges 23 of the bases 9 are spaced from the inner side 24 of' the flange 16 and the inner side 26 of the exteiisioi20.
To prevent thclongitiidinal shifting-,of the splice bar 19 with respect to the ciavir plate 11, a vertically disposed retaining The .fish plate 19 has adependl ing extension 20, seating upon the vupper e ge' esA member 27 is extended through the flange 15, beveled edge Q1 of the4 extension 9-0 and the said member 27 has its lower endl bent at an' angle as :it Q8 to arrest upward ntnove nient of said member. The member 27- is disposed at an angle` due to the 'factthat it `Yengages a. beveled wall of one of the teeth 22.
. That I clainipisz* A @Ombl'md nl11 Cba-ii, and Joint compris# ing a chair plnte'having the longitudinal marginal. portions of the upper face thereof provided with verticallyextending longitudinally disposed flanges, one of said flanges harina' its inner-side undercut` a. s )lice oar iorined integral with the other of sa id flanges and capableofahuttingagainst one Q Vmoms? Side ofw a pair of track mi loge integral seid chair-'plate and having' its rower'eno with the inner face of seid splice bar and capable of projecting into the Web of the track rails, u removable Splicebar capable of engaging the other Side-s of the track rails and provided wth an extension Seated upon the upper aceof said chair plate, said extension' having lits outer edge beveled and opposing said undercut innerside, seid beveled edge of said extension provided with teeth, a vertically extending a-ngularly dis- I posed retaining member projecting through said undercut flange, said bevelededge and bent to engage the lower face of said chair plate to arrest upward movementof said 'member2 and depending longitudinally extending reinforcements integral with the lower l'acevof said V.chair plate.
In testimony' whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
