Description
YORK. s
ALBIN WAR'IH, 0F STAPLETOM Letters Patent No. 110,612, dated December 27, 18S.l 77
IMPROVEMENT lN TAPS FOR OIL-PACKAGES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBIN WARTH, of Stapleton, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Taps for Oil-packages; and I do hereby declare-the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of' this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a central section of this invention when the tap is closed.
Figure 2 is a similar section of the saine when the valve is open.
Figure 3 Vis a similar section of the same, showing the key which I use for keeping the valve open.
Figure 4 is a central section ot'a modification thereof when the'tap is closed.
Figure 5 is a similar section of the same when the valve is open.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
' Thisinvention relates to a certain improvement ou that class of taps for which a patent wasgranted to me July 5, 1870, No. 105,150, `and iu which a valve is used, which is forced up against an external seat by means of an internal spring.
My present improvement consists in a protectingplate provided with an air-hole and discharge-spout, in combination with a valve which is forced up against its seat byan internal spring in such a manner that the valveis protected against injury, and at the same time the discharge of the liquid can be etfect-edwithout diiculty.
From the center ofthe valve projects a loop for the reception of a kcy'in such a manner that, 'by forcing the key through said loop, and across the protectingplate, the valve is heldopen and the liquid contained in the package-to which my tap is attached is free to discharge, without requiring any further attention.
In the drawing-- lhe letter A designates a package or can to which my tap B is attached.
Ihis tap consists of a cup-shaped disk, a, the outer surface of which forms a seatfor the valve b, which is drawn up against its seat by a spring, c, secured to the inner surface ot' the disk a, and hitched onto a hook projecting frointhe stein ot' the valve, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3.
The valve b is protected by a plate, (l, which is raised sufficiently above the disk a to permit the valve to be opened,- and which is provided with avent-hole, e,and discharge-opening, f.
rlhrough a hole in the center of theprotecting-platc projects a loop, g, and if a wire or key, h, is forced through this loop, as shown in fig. 3, the valve is kept open and the liquid contained in the can is free to discharge.
The rim of the central hole in the protecting-plate is depressed, so that when the valve is raised from its seat, it bears against this rim and preventsthc liquid from leaking through said central hole.
If desired,'the valve l) may be depressed ou the seat formed by the outer surface of the disk c by means ot' a screw, t', which is tapped into the protecting-plate d,
as shown in figs. 4 and 5, and in this case a spring may be applied to the valve for the purpose of forcing the same off from its seat.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersV Patent, is
The protecting-plate al, formed with the vent c, spout f, and a central depressed opening, in combination with the'cup-sh'aped valve l), provided with the loops g and k, the former operated upon by a bar, h, the latter connected y"with the end of the spring c, the whole constructed and operating as described.
ALBIN XVARTH.
