l'c all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY P. SIssON, of Rutland,

in the county of lRutland and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garpenters Gauges; and I do hereby declare that the fol'- lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being'had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a pian view of my gauge.

Figure 2 is a vertical section of the slide-block and part of the stem.V

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a gauge in the manner set forth.

In the annexed drawing-- A represents 'the beam; and

`B, the slide-block, through which a mortise is made to receive the stern, the said mortise being of' sucient width to admit of a metal plate, d, being inserted between the stem and the block B.

rEhe plate d will be furnished with shoulders s, near its end. The said shoulders serve to confine block B iu position.

e represents a cam-lever, the cam portion occupying an excavation in block B, and the lever part extending out so as to be operated by the thumb.

The object of metal-plate d is two-fold:

First, it affords a smooth surface for block B to slide upon.

Secondly,it furnishes a solid substance for the cam to rest on when the block is to be held firmly in po- The cam e, it will be observed, will be conned iu its place by the pin I, which rests in Aan opening at the top of said cam.

In operating my gauge, the lingers will grasp theV beam A, and the thumb rest slightly on the lever c.

'lbe block B will then be slidV to the desired point, and' 'the thumb pressed'on the lever to hold the block irmly in place by means of tbe projection t, which will `press against the inner side of shoulder s.

I am aware of the -existence of Peter Sawyelis patent, and disclaim anything he claims therein; but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The beam LA, the sliding-block B, cam-lever c, and

metal plate d, when the whole arecombined in the manner and fo:` the purpose substantiallyas specified.v Iu testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
