To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. RUoeLns, a citizen of the United States, residin at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and i tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driers, of which the following is a full, clear and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to drier's and with regard to the more specific features to ducts of that style comprising a horizontally disposed, rotatable drum through which a heatmg medium is adapted to flow.
One of the objects of this invention 18 to provide a drier of the above generahstyle that will be practical, comparatively simple in construction and operation, and highly efiicient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a drier with the parts thereof so assembledand connected as to permit a ready contraction and expansion ofthe various parts under varying degrees of temperature.
Another obJect of the invention is to provide Within a horizontally disposed, rotatable drum improved means for reventing material, after the same is fe into the drum, from spilling out the front end thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide the rotatable drum of a drier with means at the rear end thereof to efficiently and rapidly conduct the material after the same is dried to a oint without the drum.
Other objects wil be in part obvious and in art pointed out hereinafter he invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the ap lication of which will be indicated in the ollowing claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated one of the various possible embodiments of my invention, Figure 1 illustrates a side elevation of a drying apparatus, showing certain parts thereof broken away or in dotted lines for the sake of clearness; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical, sectional view of a portion of the same apparatus, showing-the front end of the drum; Fig. 4 is an end view of Fig. 3, the flue being removed Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring now to these drawings in detail,

The flue 4 having projecting vanes 4' for stirring the material falling thereon is suported' from the inner walls of the drum 3 by means of suitable connecting links 7 which are also arranged and connected to permit a longitudinal or expanding movement of the parts. A link 7 is rigidly connected with both the drum and the center fine 4 so that the latter may expand in both directions by means of the flexible cnn-' gitudinally disposed relatively to the drum,

The rearend of the drum is provided with an end plate 10 Figs. 6 and 7, having a central opening in which is mounted a discharge plate 11 of conical formation pro' vided with a plurality of radially disposed partitions 12 so that when the material falls it is carried out through the openin in the plate 10. On the inner surface 0 this plate 10 are provided a plurality of flights or buckets 13 of I Z-shaped cross-section adapted to scoop up the material collecting at the rear end of the discharge drum after the same is dried.

A door 10 in the pla-te 10 permits access to the interior of the drum to clean or repair the same. A plurality of annular rings are disposed about the outer wall of the drum, one of which 1'2 is provided with teeth meshing v with; the teeth of a pinion 17 driven by a suitable motor 18, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The otherrings 19 have plane surfaces coacting with suitable supporting rollers 20 beneath the same and horizontally disposed rollers 21 rotating about vertical pivots coacting with the sides of the rings 19 to prevent longitudinal movement of the drum.

A plurality of openings are provided in the front wall of the hood having hinged doors 25, or the like,-
to permit access to the interior thereof for the purpose of assembling or repairing the parts, and also removing any material that may have collected within the drum.
Connected with the upper part of the I hood is a conduit 26 leading toa suction-fan 27 mounted at any convenient point, as on top'of the furnace 1.' This fan is adapted to withdraw the moisture material as the same is drie and also create a draft through the drum from the discharge opening to draw the heatin medium given off by the discharged at the rear end of the net back to the front end of the drum. Regulating means may be applied if desired, at any honvenient point within the conduit for regulating the amount of draft therethrough.
, An opening 28 is provided at the'rear of the hood 22 above the drum to permit access to the conduit for cleaning or repairing the same.
- The operation of the apparatus is in brief. as follows Assuming a fire to have been built within the furnace and the apparatus to have become well heated, the motor 18 is started to rotate the drum 3 and the suction-fan 27 connected therewith after which the material to be dried is fed into'the hopper 24 at the side of the hood where it falls by gravity onto the flights or buckets 8 about the interior of the rotating drum. It is carried around until it reaches approximately P the highest point of its travel, whence it fall onto the heated flue 4, thence whence it is discharged to the exterior of the drum into the chute 15 if desired.
As many changes could be made in theabove construction and many ap arently widely differentembodiments of this invention could be made withoutdeparting from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above descriptionor shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Y It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is in tended to cover all of the-generic and SP8? cific features of the invention herein de scribed and all statements of the sco of the invention, which, as a matter 0 lan guage, might be said to fall the'rebetween.
Having described my invetnion, what I claim as ,new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a substantially horizontally dis osed, rotatable drum, 'a source of heat havmg a flue projecting into said drum, a longitudinal flue within said drum rotatable therewith and having a portion thereof surrounding the flue from said be dried into said drum, a plurality of buckets arrang (1 about the interior of said drum at one e (1 thereof adapted to catch the material and convey the same further into the. drum and means at the opposite end of said drum for ejecting the materlal after being dried, through the central part thereof.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a drum, a source of heat, means for directing the material to be dried-{into said drum, a pluralityof buckets about the interior of said drum adapted to catch the material and convey the same further into the drum, and a plu-' rality of flights or buckets arranged at the o posite end of'said drum adapted to catch t e material after the same is dried and discharge the same from said drum.
4. In an apparatus of the character de scribed, in combination, a rotatable drum, a source of heat, a longitudinally disposed flue within said drum connected with said source of heat, a plate at the rear end of said drum, and a plurality of flights 0r buckets mounted on said plate adapted to catch the material after the same is dried and discharge the same from said drum.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a horizontally disposed, rotatable drum, a source of heat, a longitudinally disposed flue within said drum connected with said source of heat, a plate at the rear end of said drum, and a plurality of flights or buckets mounted on said plate adapted to catch the material after the same is dried and discharge the same from said drum, said plate having an opening to permit access to the interior of said drum.

8. In anrapparatus of the character described, in combination, a rotatable drum having a central dischar e o ening at one end, a source of heat, a ongitudinally dis posed flue connected with said source of heat, means for admitting material to be dried to said drum between said flue and the interior wall of said drum, said drum being inclined with respect to the horizontal to permit material to pass from one end to the other, means for discharging the material after the same is dried through the opening in the central part of said drum, means for rotating said drum, and means for preventing a a longitudinal movement thereof.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a rotatable drum, a source of heat connected therewith, a stationary hood surrounding said connection, means passing through said hood for conveying the material to be dried into said drum, and a plurality of buckets arranged about the interior of said drum on which the material falls from the conveying means and by which it is carried farther into the drum.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a rotatable drum, :1 source of heat connected therewith, a'hood surrounding the point of connection between said drum and said source of heat, means passing through said hood for conducting the material to be dried into the drum, and means within the drum on which the material falls adapted to prevent the material from spilling at the front end of said drum.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a substantially horizontally disposed, rotatable drum, a source of heat, means projecting into said drum and connectingsaid source of heat with the interior ,ofsaid drum, a stationary hood surrounding the point of connection, and a plurality of openings in the front of said hood to permit access to the interior thereof.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a substantially hori zontally disposed, rotatable drum, a source of heat, fluid conducting means connected with the interior of' said drum and said source of heat, a stationary hood surrounding said connection, means for directing the material to be dried through said hood into said drum, and a plurality of openings arranged adjacent the end of said drum provided with doors to permit access to the interior of said drum.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a drum having a centrally disposed discharge'opening atone end, a source of heat, ahood, means therein for directing the material to be dried into the other end of said drum, means for discharging the material after the same is dried throughsaid substantially centrally disposed opening at the opposite end of said. drum, and means for'causing a current of air topass through said drum in an opposite direction to that of the material to be dried tsetse? In an' ap aratus of the character described, in com ination, a substantially horizontally disposed rotatable drum, a flue within said drum constituting a passageway for a heating current, linksconnecting said drum and flue, one of said links comprising a plurality of sections assembled to form longitudinally disposed branches at one end rigidly connected to said drum, the other end of said sections being rigidly connected to said flue, means for directing the material to be dried into one end of said drum, and inclined buckets carried b the drum adapted to guide the material rom the directing means farther into the drum.

In an ap aratus of the character described, in com ination, a substantially horizontally disposed rotatable drum. a flue within said drum constituting a passageway for a heating current, links connecting said drum and flue, one of said links comprising a plurality of sections assembled to form longitudinally disposed branches at one end rigidly connected to said drum, the other end of said sections being rigidly connected to said fiue, means'for directing the material to be dried into one end of said drum, inclined buckets carried by the drum adapted to guide the material from the directing means farther into the drum, said drum having a central discharge opening in the opposite end, a conical plate within the drum disposed to guide material through said opening, and means adapted to raise the material in the drum and discharge the same upon said conical plate.

In an ap )aratus of the character described, in com ination, a substantially horizontally disposed rotatable drum, a flue within said drum constituting a passageway for a heating current, links connecting said drum and flue, one of said links comprising a plurality of sections assembled to form longitudinally disposed branches at one end rigidly connected to said drum, the other end of said sections being rigidly connected to said flue means for directing the material to be drie into one end of said drum, in-
