To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SYLVA L. DIoKsoN, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Short Creek, county of Brooke, and State of WVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Relay Sounder Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to telegraphic sounders, and specifically to a combined relay and sounder.
The primary object of the invention is to provide in connection with a telegraphic relay of an ordinary type a simple and ellicient form of sounder actuated directly by the relay and not requiring the interposition of a local circuit with its attendant batteries and wiring connections.
A further object is to provide a sounder having means of adjustment whereby the magnitude of sound propagated therein may be regulated.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the features of construction, arrangementof parts and combinations 01' elements which will hereinafter be fully described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part 01 this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a partial cross section taken substantially on the line 33, Fi 2; and Fig. l is a longitudinal section of the same.
Referring to said drawings, in which like designating characters distinguish like parts throughout the several views-1 indicates the base, 2 the magnet coils, 3 the binding posts, 1 the armattire-withdrawing spring, 5 the spring-tension adjusting screw, 6 the supporting post, and 7 the ad ustable screwsupporting rod of an ordinary type of telegraphic relay, all of said parts. being of a. common form A pivoted armature 8 arranged to coiipcrate with the electromagnet has an upright arm or lever 9 formed integral therewith, as shown, and disposed at opposite sides of said arm or lever are two substantially circular metallic disk- like diaphragms 10 and 11. inwardly from its center a stud or pin 12, said pins constituting stops between which the upper end of said lever plays as the armature 8 is attracted by the electromagnet or withdrawn by the spring ,4, and by the Specification of Letters Patent.

Said diaphragms 10 and 11 are respectively supported by plates 13 and. 14, peripheral flanges 13' and 14: formed on said plates being disposed in embracing relation to said diaphragms. Strips of insulating material 15 and iii are interposed between the ieripheries of said diaphragms and the flanges of the plates, as shown. Said plates 13 and l l are peripherally embraced and supported by a casing 17 havingintegral extensions 17 constituting supporting legs that are rigidly mounted upon the base 1. The plate 13 is rigid with respect to the asing 17, while plate 1.4 is movable with respect to said casing. Thus, the distance between the stops 12 may be adjusted for increasing or decreasing the length of stroke oi the lever 9, providing for the regulation of the volume of sound emitted upon the contact of the lever with said stops.
Fixed in the flange 14 is a plurality of pins or screws 18 each 01 which projects outwardly through and is slidable in an inclined slot 19 provided in the casing 17. One of said pins or screws is preferably in the form of a set-screw, as 18', adapted to be set, when in adjusted position, in impinging relation to the casing for binding the plate 14 in fixed relation to said casin As is obvious, a slight rotation of the plate 14tacts to cause the diaphragm 11 to approachor move away from the diaphragm 10, according to the direction of said rotation. For the purpose of allowing the volume of sound emitted by the striking of the arm or lever 9 against the stops carried by the diaph'agms to escape unobstructedly,
openings or slots, as 20, are provided in the back to its normal position, said spring 22 serving to assist the withdrawing spring 4: and to accelerate the return movement of the armature, while oilerlng no resistance able, the same may be connected through the usual binding posts 24 provided onthe relay base 1.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a telegraphic relay having an armature provided with an upright arm, of a pair of metallic diaphragms disposed on opposite sides 1 of said arm and adapted to be struck by the latter at the limits of its movements for producing audible sounds, plates supporting said diaphragms, and a casing supporting said plates, one of said plates being adjustably mounted within said casing.
2. The combination with a telegraphic re lay having an armature provided with an upright arm, of a pair of metallic diaphragms disposed on opposite sides of said arm and adapted to be struck by the latter at the limits of its movements for producing audible sounds, plates supporting said diaphragins, and" a casing supporting said plates, said casing having inclined slots therein, pinscarried by one of said plates and projecting outwardnthrough said Islots whereby a rotary movementimparted to the plate acts to advance or retract the latter with respect to the other plate, according to the direction on 'said' movement.
3. The combination with a telegraphicrelay having an armature provided with an upright arm of a pair of metallic diaphragms disposed on opposite'side'sof said arm and adapted to be struck by the latter at the limits of its movements forproducing audible sounds, plates supporting said diaphragms, a casing supporting said plates,
said casing having inclined slots therein, pins carried by one of said plates "and projected outward through. said slots whereby a rotary movement imparted to the plate acts to advance or retract the latter with respect to the other plate, according to the SYLVA L. DIGKSON.
