Be it known that 1, JOHN WINTER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indi ana, havev made a certain new and useful invention in Sep'arable Fasteners; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and

exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.

The invention has relation to means for detachably fastening carriage curtains t0 the carriage frame, having for its object to provide an easily operated means of fastening, and one which will obviate to a great extent the rattling and shaking to which such curtains are liable, especially when the wind is at all strong.

Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the letter a, designates a curtain, having an opening therein for use in connection with a fastening stud plate d,

. and with seat plates 6, 6, located on opposite sides of the curtain and provided with registering slots 0, c, said stud plate being adapted to be secured to some part of the carriage frame by screws or bolts engaging perforations in the base plate d. The slot 0, of each plate 6, is formedwith two end portions 6, and e, of different size, one of said end portions being connected with the other by means of a short neck or passage e, of less size than either ofsaid end portions, and each seat plate having opposite inward e ttending portions f, f, located between said end portions. The stud plate (I, whlch is designed. for use in connection with said seat plates, consist; of a. base plate (1, and a stud projecting at right angles therefrom and having an outer shouldered head 9 a middle shouldered holdin portion g, and an in- .ner shank 9, located etween said head and said base plate. The head 9 of the stud is adapted in shape and size to pass neatly through the larger end portions of the slots -of the seat plates, and terminates in shoulders k Adjoining this head, immediately next sald shoulders, is the holding portion g, which is adapted in shape and size to pass neatly through the smaller end portions of the slots of the seat plates. This holding portion terminates in guard shoulders h, and from it to the base plate extends the inner shank 9, having a length substantially equal to that of the middle holding portion of the stud, and to the combined thickness of the curtain and its slotted seat plates, said shank being adapted in shape and size to neatly engage the connecting passages of the seat plate slots. The opposing plates 7), b, at each side of the curtaln are preferably secured together by means of pointed marginal extensions b, b, of one of said plates, said extensions penetrating the curtain, and being inturned at their free ends at b b to engage the edges of the other plate.

In the use of the invention, the head of the stud and the holding portion next the same are passed through the larger ends of the registering seat plate slots, by inward movement of the curtain, until the inner seat plate comes in contact with the base plate 0?, which forms a stop therefor. The curtain and seat plates are then moved transversely upon the base plate as a guide, when the shank of the stud will pass through the connecting passages of the seat plate slots into alinement with the smaller end portions of said slots, and upon outward movement of the curtain to normal position, the smaller end portions of the seat plate slots are engaged with the holding portion g of the stud, the outer seat plate is brought into engagement with the shoulders h of the stud head, and the curtain is held in a steady and secure manner against lateral shaking. In order to unfasten the curtain, it is necessary because of the small length of the shank of the stud to move the curtain inward until the inner seat plate comes in contact with the stud base, in order that the seat plates may clear the guard shoulders of the holding portion g. This is not liable to happen casually, and the fastening is therefore designed to be secure. And because in fastening or unfastening, the requisite movements of the curtain are positive and guided and limited by the.
