TIMBER-DOLLY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedAug. 4, 1914.
Application filed November 28, 1913. Serial No. 803,507.
To all whom it m a l concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN G. DRAIN, citizen of the United States, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of l/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Timber-Dollies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to carriages and wagons and has special reference to what is known as a timber dolly.
'The principal object of the invention is to providean improved form of timber dolly which is readily adapted to unload a pile of lumber or timber placed thereon upon suitable trestles.
A second object of the invention is to provide a device of this description with a novel arrangement of means for supporting the load on the device, the means being arranged to automatically close down upon the body of the invention when a roller, which ordinarily engages the lumber, is operated in a certain direction.
A third object of the invention is the provision of means for maintaining the dolly in fixed relation to the load at one end while the operation of the roller above mentioned is taking place.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like charactors of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dolly in horizontal position with the load of lumber applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the dolly in the unloading position, the position of the lumber being shown in full lines just prior to completing the unloading process and the position of the lumber being shown in dotted lines after being unloaded, the position of the movable member and roller be ing also indicated in full and dotted lines in accordance with the above positions of the lumber. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the roller used in connection with this :invention with the adjacent parts. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the supports at the end of the dolly opposite the roller.
In carrying out the objects of this invention there is provided a frame 10 which consists of two side members suitably held to sition gether,
as by the cross pieces 11. This frame is supported on wheels 12 so that the frame may be readily rolled from place to place. Hinged to one end of the frame is a timber support 13, the hinge of said support being indicated at 1 1. This timber support is hinged close to one of the cross pieces 11 so that when the support is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 it bears against said cross piece and is held in position against the cross piece by means of a latch 15 which is pivoted to the cross piece and engages a pin 16 on the member 13. The member 13 is :t'urthermore of such length that it rests on the side members .10 when in elevated po- 50 that the load is carried on the side members. At the opposite end of the dolly there is provided a hinged piece 17 which is connected to the side members by hinges 18 and has at each end an upstanding plate 19 provided with suitable openings to receive the journals 20 of a loader 21. This member 16 is also located adjacent one of the cross pieces 11 and is held thereto by means of a latch 22 pivoted to said cross piece and engaging a pin 23 projecting from one of the members 15). Upon one of the journals 20 is provided a ratchet wheel 24, which is fixed to the journal and is adapted to be engaged by a pawl 25 pivoted to the member 19 adjacent said ratchet wheel. The other journal 20 is squared as indicated at 26 for the reception of an ordinary wrench so that the roller 21 may be rotated. Upon the member 13 is provided a series of spaced spikes or points 27 while upon the rollers 21 are provided similar points or spikes 28.
lVhen in use the members 17 and 13 are elevated as indicated in Fig. 1. The lumber is then piled on the member 13 and the roller 21 until the load has been completed. The lumber is then moved to a suitable place and a short trestle 29 is located under one end thereof, whereupon the dolly is tipped as indicated in Fig. 2 until the lumber rests upon the trestle 29. A high trestle 30 is then placed under the lumber pile. Thereupon, the wrench having been applied to the squared end 26, the roller is rotated in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2. This causes the lumber to tend to slide downward but this action is prevented by the spikes 27. As a result, the latch 22 being released, the member 17 is folded down as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 so that the upper end of the lumber is allowed to rest on the trestle 30. Thereupon the upper end of the dolly, reference being had to Fig. 2, is tilted slightly upward when the spikes are withdrawn from the lower end of the lumber whereupon the dolly may be turned around and removed. There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and of the character specified.
It will be obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as come properly within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, a load carrying bolster at one end of said frame, a second bolster hinged to said frame at the opposite end thereof, a load supporting roller carried by said second bolster and means for rotating said roller.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, a load carrying bolster at one end of said frame, a second bolster hinged to said frame at the opposite end thereof, means for locking said bolster against turning movement, a load support ing roller carried by said second bolster and means for rotating said roller.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, a load carrying bolster at one end of said frame, a second bolster hinged to said frame at the opposite end thereof, a load supporting roller carried by said second bolster and provided upon its face with lumber engaging projections, and
means for rotating said roller.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, a load carrying bolster at one end of said frame, a second bolster hinged to said frame at the opposite end thereof, a load supporting roller carried by said second bolster, means for rotating said roller, and means for locking said roller against rotation.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a frame, hinged bolsters carried by the opposite ends of said frame, means for locking said bolsters against turning movement, a spiked roller carried by one of said bolsters, means for rotating said roller and means for locking said roller against rotation.
In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of two witnesses.
