'UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. OCONNOR, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM H. MINER, OF
CHICAGO,
ILLINOIS.
TANDEM DRAF.l.-RIGCrIl\T(:`r FOR RAILWAY-CARS.
T 0 all '1a/1 om. 'i' t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCONNOR, a citizen of the United States, vresiding in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tandem Draft-Rigging for Railway-Cars, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tandem draft gearing for railway cars.
'lhejobject of the invention is to provide a simplified construction of'strueture of the type set forth, in which the tandem yoke member is removably attached to the drawbar by means of a key, and in which the yoke is cast in a single piece having intermediate its ends a center thimble for operating the intermediate front and rear followers,
My invention consists in the novel parts anddevices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown, described and claimed.
IIn the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in longitudinal, vertical section, of a structure embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, partly in hori- Fig. 3 is a transverse section, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. l, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a section of the yoke member, taken substantially midway between the rear end and the center thimble.
In the drawings, the gearing is shown as mounted between the center sills 10, 10, provided with the stop plates 11, secured thereto by rivets 12, 12. These stop plates are each provided with the usual front and rear stops 13 and 14, respectively, and the intermediate fro`nt and rear stops 15 and the middle stops 1G. The tandem draft rigging, as herein shown, is slidably mounted between the center sills 10 and retained therein by the saddle plate 17, removably secured to the sills 10 by bolts 18. Mounted within the yoke are the end front and rear followers 19 and 20 and the intermediate followers 21 and 22. The usual tandem arranged draft sprin s 23 and 24 are mounted between each set o' follower plates, and within the draft springs are the restoring follower springs Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 24,
Patented July 28, 1 91 1.
1911. Serial No. 640,078.
The yoke 27, which is cast in a single piece, is substantially channel shaped in cross section, having the outwardly extending flanges 28 and intermediate the ends of the yoke. is formed the hollow thimble 29, rectangular in cross section and adapted to operate the intermediate followers 21, 22.
preferably rectangularJ hollow head 30, within which is adapted to titloosely the correbar 31. This head 30 has its vertical sides 32 extended forwardly, and said sides are tapered and each provided with a slot 33 for the reception of a removable key 34 by means of which the draw-bar and the draft yoke are detachably connected together. Each of these sides 32 is further provided with a strengtheningr rib 35. The key 34 passes through the center sills l0, which are provided with slots 36, thus adapting the key 34 to slide therein. The key l-l is prevented from accidental displacement by having formed thereon at one end an upturncd flange 37, and having at its other end a removable cotter pin 38.
By means of the structure herein disclosed the tandem yoke is comparatively light .ncl made exceedingly strong by means of the channel structure, and furthermore by having the intermediate thimble 29 formed integral with the rest of the yoke. By means o the removable key connection between the draw-bar and the yoke, the draw-bar may he conveniently disconnected from the rigging without the necessity ofremoving the yoke or the rest of the tandem mechanism.
As clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the rear end of the draw bar contacts directly with the front-follower, so that in batting action, the yoke and the key connection between the draw bar and yoke will be materially relieved'from shock, thereby insuring longer life to the yoke and key connections. By making the intermediate thimble 29 hollow and open at each end, the entire yoke may be easily cast andwithout the necessity for employing any unusual and expensive forms of cores.
I claimz- 1. In a tandem draft rigging, a draft yoke having a hollow rectangu ar end, rear end spondingly shaped inner end of the draw-v The front end of the yoke is provided with a' 60 piece and an intemeclnte hollow thmble all and means for connecting salici yoke and integrally formed, substantially as spececl. draw bar, substantially as specied.
2. In a tandemdraft rigging the combnation with a draw bar, of a yoke having JOHN F O CUNNQR' 5 spaced arms, a rear end piece and an nter- Witnesses:
mediate hollow tlxmble, said thmble being PEARL ABRAMS,
formed integrally with the arms of the yoke, H. M. MUNDAY.
