To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Jesse ALEXANDER, a citizen of the United States of America, and residin at New York, in the county of Kings and'ltate of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing-Machine :Key and Type-Bar Operating Mechanism, of which the following is l a s ecification.

The object of the invention is to rovide a durable and easily operated mecianism with a light starting touch and yet capable of heavy manifolding or other heavy .work. The invention consists in a construction the principles of which are illustrated in the accompanying two she ts of drawings. The key lever is so mounted and connected with the universal bar and intermediate lever that the key lever may be readily removed and withdrawn from the front of the machine. the arc of a circle being carried by a vertical type bar plate. The key levers may be or ran ed in banks as is common in this art. Each type bar has a number of teeth arranged around if a pivot in the form of a gear segment and a tootned disk or gear segment is pivotally mounted adjacent the type bar teeth'to engage the same. A twoarmed intermediate lever has its horizontal forwardly extending arm connected with a key lever and its vertical arm connected to a link. This link has sliding engagement with a downwardly projecting lug on the type bar and has a pin and slot connection with the toothed disk which engages the type bar teeth.

The key levers such as 1 are all pivotally mounted on a rod 2 at the rear of the machine. The rear end of the key lever is forked at 3 so as to have a yieldin attachable connection with the pivot ro 2. The type bar 4 is pivoted at 5 in the type bar plate (5 so as to strike against the front of the platen 7 in printing. This platen is mounted in a suitable carriage adapted to traverse the machine from side to side. The intermediate lever 8 is connected to the link 9 at its up r end and the link 9 is connected to tie toothed disk 10. The parts are held in the position shown by means of a tension spring 11, the type bar resting in a bracket 12. The forward arm of the intermediate lever is forked as at 13 to have a sliding engagement with the pin 14 carried by the key lever 1. The adjusting screw 15 operating in a stationary bar 16 is adapted to adjust the tension of the spring ll. The upward arm of the intermediate lever has a in 17 affording a pivot in the hole 18 of tie link 9. The rear end of the link 9 has a slot 19 for the pin toothed disk 10. The type bar 4 has a down wardly projecting lug or shoulder 21 engaged by the front end or tip 22 of the link 9. The intermediate levers are all mounted on a pivot rod 23. The toothed disks such as 10 are pivoted as at 24 and each has a series of teeth such as 25 engaging the.

When the front em of a key lever is depressed it rocks the intermediate lever about its pivot and carries the upper end of its vertical arm forward. The link 9 having a sliding;' connection at its rear with the pin 20 of the disk 10 is thus guided in a substantially straight line forward movement and the tip 22 engaging the shoulder 21 impcls the type bar upward. It will be obvious that the invention is not limited to the exact proportions, form and arrangement herein illustrated and that the claims are not intended to be limited by the particular terms employed except so far as required by the prior art.

What I claim is 2- 1.111 a key and type bar mechanism, a pivoted key lever, a pivoted type bar having n projecting shoulder and a series of teeth, a diskjhsving teeth meshing with the teeth, of said type bar, a link. connected to said disk "and having one end adapted to cooperate with said shoulder on said typebar and an intermediate lever connecting said link and said key lever.

In a key and type bar mechanism, a pivoted key lever, s pivoted intermediate lever connected thereto, a pivoted type bar having gear teeth and a projecting shoulder, a toothed disk meshing with the gear teeth on said typeloar and a link connected to so id intermediate lever, adapted to engage the shoulder of said type bar and having lost mot-ion connection with said toothed disk.
