IMPROVEM ENT IN COTTON-PRESSES.
The Schedule 'referred to these ALetters Patent and making part of the lame.
The nature oi' Illy-invention consists in the con struction and arrangement of a cotton-press, as will be hereinafter fully set`forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertainsto make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe .its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing,in Which- Figure 1 is a side view, and
Figure 2, a. plan view of my press.
A represents the bed of my pres"s, upon which are standards, B B, suitably connectedand braced.
At the rear end of thebed A. and .secured 'against the last set of standards is the back-board Gprovided with vertical. grooves, and in front of the same is the bale-box D, which is so placed `between the standards that it can be slid out and in at pleasure.
The box E, in front of the `bale-box I), is where the cotton is pnt in to be pressed.
Thefollower or presser-block G hasvertical grooves on its inner side corresponding with the grooves in the back-board C, and it is attached to a horizontal frame, H, moving in guides upon the bed A.
Upon each side of the frame H is secured a ratchetbar, I, in 'which a toothed pawl, J, is made to catch by means of a lever, K, pivoted on the bed and connected by means of a rod, a, withsaid toothed pawli The inner end of each lever K is providedwith a sehies ot' holes, as shown in fig. 2, in one of which holes the rod ais attached.
By changing the rodsa a in these holes more or less purchase may be obtained, according to the force needed to press the cotton.
OnV top of the frame H is another ratchet-bar, L, into whicha hinged pawl, M, falls, to hold the presserblock and prevent it from giving back when the levers and toothed pawls are being changed.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination, with the-.horizontal frame H and the mechanism herein described for operating the same, the ratchet-bar L and hinged pawl M, arranged sub'-A stantialiy as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the bed A, standards B, back-board C, bale-box D, follower G, frame H, ratchetbars IL, toothed pawlsJ J, rods a a, levers KK, and hinged pawl M, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and furthe purposes herein set forth.
