Letters Patent No. 96,421, dated November 2, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-PRIZES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and making pant of the name I I, CHARLES T. Gimron, of Baltimore, in the State of llfaryland, have invented a new and useful Improved Horizontal Lever Tobacco-Prize.
'attire and Objects oft/rc Inception.
M y prize or press is intended prin'iarily for farmersl use in packing raw tobacco into hogsheads, (hcnce its nalne,) and consists of a strong lun'zontal frame, adapted to receive and support the. hogshead or other receiver, and a reservoir for the supply ot' the material thereto; a plunger' or follower guided horizontally in said frame, and having a stein provided 'on each side of its transverse centre with one or more rows ot' vcrtical pertorations, provided with 'shifting-pins; a long horizontal lever, lulcrumed on a. iixed pivot in line with the transverse centre of the plunger, balanced in the frame, supported at its outer end by a groundwheel, and adapted tohave applied to it man or animal-power to reciprocate or vibrate it. The lever, in its vibrations, alternately acting on the pins in the series ot' perforations iu the stem of' the. plunger on the respective sides of its t'ulcrum, and said pins being successively, as released, shifted` back in their series of perfor-ations, the necessary progressive movement otv the'plunger is obtained.
The means i'or applying the motion of the lever to the plunger and follower, and those forsupporting the lever, constitute the improvements; being of novel character, simple, and strong, and adapting the prize especially torcountry build, by enabling its const-ruction nearly entirely ot'wood.
Description of Drawings.
ln the accompanying drawings- Figure l represents a plan view, partly in section, o
Vmy improved tobacco-prize.
Areception otthe hogshea'd and reservoir.
D 1.),uprights foi-'the support of the contiguous ends ot the hogshead and reservoir, being connected to the ground frame, by hinge-joints, as shown in fig.
l, to adapt them to be lfolded down to allow the read)rv y reception of said pins P.
introduction and remo 'al of said hogshead and reser voll'.
E, a double springcatch for the support of the up rights D.
F G, transverse horizontally slotted timbers, for the guidance and support of the. plunger; and
H, a longitudinal timber, on which the lever is v forming the fulcrum of the lever L.
M represents the ground wheel for supporting the outer end ofthe lever L. y
N represents a hook, for the attachment of a. team to' the lever L, and 0,tig.1y,a whiiletrec attached thereto.
P P represent the pins inserted in the stem of' the plunger K, for the engagement of the lever L, and k k, the pertbrations in thestern of thc plunger K for the Q Q Q represent metallic plates applied to the'two faces of the lever L, where it rests'ou its fulcrum, and where it engages with the pins P, and ou the oppos-V ing face ofthe timber F, to protect said surfaces, a-ud prevent the rapid wear which would otherwise Occur Y at these points., R, iig. 3, represents the material being;r pressed. To pack a hogshead, it, empty or loosely filled, with a iilled reservoir, J, is `placed in thc cradle C of the frame, the former against the abutment B, and the nprights D turned into place, and secured by the catch F. The plunger K is then forced forward by hand as far as it can be easily, when the pins P, haw' ing been introduced in front of the lever L, a recipro eating or vibrating motion is imparted thereto bya team attached to the whietrec O, or by other suit able means, and through said pins, which are alternately acted on, and shifted back during pressure onv the other, a nearly continuous progressive motion of the plunger is produced. The plunger, as it is projected, forces the material from the reservoir J .into
thc receiver I, and compresses .it tothe desired extent ,l
Additional reservoirs may be introduced therein. until the hogshead is filled' to thedcsired extent, when it maybe removed, au empty one introduced, andthe operation repeated.
lo remove the reservoirs and receivers, the pins .P
are Withdrawn, the plunger forced back until out of the reservoir, and the nprights D released from their catch F, and folded down, when they maybe rolled out. For tbe adjustment of the pins, t-lle operator or au assistant may be. seated ou the level-at; its fulcrmn.
'lhe several rows of perfor-ations, It, on each side of the iilcrum at different distances therefroii, 'adapta fast, or slower and more powerful movement of the plunger to be obtained, as required at different stages ofthe operation.
By applying the power through a loue,r lever, as proposed, au immense pressure may readily,r be 0b-` t-ained; while any loss of power which' might otherwise resultl from supporting and overcoming the'weight. and friction of such a. lever is effectually obviated by the mode of supporting the same described.
The entire prize may*4 be `easily and cheaply built, and is especiallyl adapted for country use; the only metal work on it being the six wrought-iron plates Q, for the sides ofthe lever and the fulcrnm timber, the t-wo pins P, and a few bolts; all of which any blacksmith can make.
Although the device is primarily intended as a tobacco-prize for farmers use, it mayobviously be'otherwise employed, an'd the material, and the form incicient; thereto, in either-case be changed.
. A suitable receiver adapted for the formation of bales. may take Vthe place of the bogshead and reservoir, and the adapt-atiou'of the frame for their reception be consequently omitted.
Suitable friction rollers may be employed to relieve the plunger from friction iu its guides.
Suitable ratchet-racks on tlie'stcm ofthe plunger, and dogs or pawls hinged to the lever, may take the place of the pertbrations k and pins 1; and by haring said racks of'sutiilcient width or duplicated, and adapting the pawls to be adjusted laierllly, or duplicating them, the benelits of the multiplication of the rows of said perfor-ations may bel secured.
Claims.
I claim, as my invention- 1. .lhe combination, with the horizontal plunger K, of the lever L, having a. fixed fnlcrum in line with the transverse centre of the stem of said plunger, the pexftnations k In, and pins P 1, employed and operating substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The provision, in the stem of the plunger K, operated by the lever L, as described, 'oftwo or more longitudinal rows or series ofthe pertbrations'k ou each side of its transverse centre, at different distances therefrom, as described, for the purpose set forth. g
3. In combination with the lever L, employed and operating substantially as described, the support F, and gronml-wheel M, substantially as and for the. pur poses Set forth. 1
Tothe above specification of my improved horizontal lever tolniceo-prize, l have signed my hand, this 18th day of June, A. l). 18159.
