To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS B. News, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Miami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wire-Fence Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to wire fence clamps of that character utilized to clamp wire fencing, and for attachment with any suitable device whereby the fencing may be pulled tightly along and against the posts in erecting a fence, and my object is to provide a device which will possess at the same time simplicity, strength and durability, and which comprises quick detachable members for disposal on opposite sides of the wire fencing and for connection thcrethrough.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention, and which forms a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clamping members detached; Fig. 2 is a side elevation illustrating the practical ap plication of the clamping members to a wire fence; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the parts illustrated in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of the clamping bars in detached relation; and Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view through the clamping bars shown in Fig. 4 illustrating the same in operative relation.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2 my improved fence clamp comprises a pair of similar clamping bars A and A, each of which is provided with a series of longitudinal ribs a partially covering its inner surface whereby to provide a wire gripping face, and each of which is further provided along one edge with a plurality of openings at. The bar A is provided along its opposite edge with a plurality of angularly extending eyes a and the bar A is provided along its corresponding edge with a plurah ity of angularly extending books 0 said hooks being adapted for ready engagement with the eyes a through the interstices between the wires of the fence B, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Secured through the openings a of the clamping bars are links C, the said openings a being so arranged with respect to one another as to enable the arrangement of the links C in transversely alined pairs, the links being adapted to extend inwardly in overlapped relation, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3, and to receive in connection therewith suitable pull members I), by means of suitable fastening members, such as for instance, the chain hooks (Z, as fully indicated in Fig. 2. It will be noted that the connection between the clamping bars, that is, between their forward longitudinal edges, by means of the hooks a and eyes a, forms a hinge, and is capable of being readily and quickly detached, and it will be further noted that this connection provides for the rearwardly diverging arrangement of the clamping bars, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, whereby the connection of the pull members D with the overlapping transverse bars of links 0 tends to draw the rear edges of the clamping bars toward one another and to force the said bars into gradually tighter engagement with the fence B as the tension on the latter increases with its tightening movement under actuation of the said pull members.
In the modified form of my invention, as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the rear longitudinal edges of the clamping bars E and F/ are similarly cut away between the links 0' and the forward wire-engaging parts of the bars, adjacent their relatively engaging hooks e and eyes a, are curved as indicated at 6 being convex at their inner surfaces and having their outer concaved surfaces strengthened by means of diagonal webs which extend flush with the outer surfaces of the bars. Furthermore, these bars are otherwise generally lighter in construction than the bars A and A before described, and are braced by transverse webs 0" extending thereacross, substantially in line with their openings through which the links C are sooured. By the construction as thus described, the bars are susceptible of more ready manipulation and are generally easier to handle. both in and out of use.
I claim A wire fence clamp comprising elongated bars having convex inner wire gripping faces and concave upper faces opposite the said wire gripping faces which are provided with diagonal strengthening webs. relatively engageable hooks and eyes formed along the forward longitudinal edges of said clamping bars and adapted to cooperate to form a detachable hinged connection, the opposite edges of said bars being provided with spaced openings and being eoncavely cut away between the said openings, said bars being further provided With transverse strengthening Webs arranged substantially in line with their said openings, and links secnred' through the said bar openings and adapted to extend inwardly in overlapped relation, for the purpose described.
