G is a gasket or packing ring of. homogeneous metal of a hardness suitable to the pressure to be carried by the joint. It is usually of copper, though iron or steel may be used with advantage when very high seat- 0f the hole and, as, clearly shown, forms with the cover a close joint all around the hole. -The gasket is of course inserted after the coverhas been introduced into the hole and before it is drawn intoclosi'ng position.
