CULTIVATOR.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, AB HOLLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forrest City, inthe countyy of St. Francis and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultiva` known as straddle row cultivators; the
obj ect being to provide a cultivator which is so constructed that two rows can be cultivated at the same time.
Another object of the invent-ion is to provide novel means for adjusting the teeth carrying bars, whereby they can be thrown at any angle desired in order to conform to the inclination of the hill or row being cultivated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cultivator in which each cultivating member is adjustable laterally in respect to the body of the cultivator in order to allow the same to be adjusted according` to the width of row being cultivated.
Another obj ect of the invention is to provide a cultivator which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, and one in which the parts are so arranged and mounted, that they` can be adjusted from the drivers seat without dismounting` from the cultivator.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims.
In the drawings-Figure 1; indicates a front elevation of my improved cultivator; the tongue being shown in section; Fig. 2; is a top plan view of the cultivator; the tongue being broken away; Fig. 8, is a rear elevation of the cultivator; Fig. 4; is a detail longitudinal section; Fig. 5, is a detail transverse section showing the manner of pivotally mounting the teeth-carrying bars; and Fig. 6, is a detail transverse section through the body, showing the manner of mounting the laterally adjustable members.
Like numerals of reference, refer to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the bodyy of the cultivator which is provided with a tongue 2 carrying a draft-bar 3 to which Specification of Letters Patent.

Secured to the rear portion of the body in suitable keepers 12, are operating bars 13 kmounted in guide-ways 14 secured upon the rear of the bars 7 and 8. Connected to these bars to each side of the drivers seat is an operating lever 15 the lower end of which is pivotallyconnected tothe respective bar and 'each lever has a pivotal yand slidahle connection with the bar 13, as show'nat 16 so that by drawing the operating levers toward the drivers seat, the bars can be moved away from the body so as to adjust the cultivator to the width of the row being cultivated and after having been adjusteds the screws 9 can be tightened and the same will be locked in its adjusted position. It will be seen that the means for adjusting the bars 7 and 8 laterally are formed exactly alike, and the description of one will be suiicient for both. l
Each of the bars i' and 8 are formed exactly alike and are provided with grooves in theirV under faces inwhich are pivotally mounted teeth-carrying bars 17 and 18 provided with teeth 19; said bars being mounted upon pivot pins 2O as clearly shown, in order to allow the same to swing freely and it will be seen that by mounting the upper ends of the bars within the grooves, they ywill be prevented from yielding rearwardly by the pressure exerted when brought into contact with the side of the hill.
Connected to each of the teeth-carrying bars 1T and 18, is a rod 21 which extends up through an opening formed in the bar adjacent its end, and said rods are connected to an operating bar 22 arranged upon the top of the bars 7l and 8 as the case may be. Extending upwardly from'the sides of the bars 7 and 8 are standards 23 provided with spaced openings through which a pin 24 is adapted to be forced in order to limit the upward movement or" the bar so as to regulate the expansion of the toothed bar by the weight of the operator upon the body and it will be seen that by this construction, the toothed bars can be adjusted at any inclination desired and maintained in that position.
in order to prevent the bars 7 and 8 from being twisted from the body when brought into Contact with the ground, each bar is connected to the tongue 2 by arod 25; the forward end of said rod being adjustably mounted within an apertured plate 2G carried by the tongue so that when the bars 7 and 8 are forced laterally by removing the rods 25 from the plate 26, the bars will be free to move and after having been adjusted by forcing the rod into one of the openings of the plate 26, they will be held in that position.- ln order to provide means for operating the rod 25, a standard 27 is formed on the tongue 2carrying pivotally and slidably mounted opera/ting levers 28; the lower ends of which carry rods 29 which are slidably mounted upon the rods 25 in order to allow the rods to be detached from the plate 26 by the operator without dismounting from the cultivator.

l. A cultivator, comprising a body having a pair of tooth bars pivotally mounted upon horizontal pivots and capable of swinging toward and away from each other, a
vertical rod carried by each of`said tooth;
bars, an operatingbar connecting said rods and mounted upon said body, and means carried by said body for preventing upward movement of said operating bar.
2. A cultivator, comprising a body hav-` ing a pair of tooth bars pivotally mounted upon horizontal pivots and capable of swinging toward and awayfrom each other, a rod carried the free end of each of said tooth bars and extending through said body, an operating bar mounted upon said body having a connection with each of said rods, spaced apertured standards eX- tending upwardly i'rom said body, and a pin passing through the apertures of said standard for preventing upward movement of said operating bars.
3. A cultivator having a body carrying a bar, said bar having a grooved under face, tooth bars pivotally mounted in the groove of said bar, rods connected to said tooth bars extending through apertures formed in said bar, an operating bar mounted upon said body and connected to said rods, spaced standards carried by said bar, and a pin connecting said standards for preventing upward movement of said operating bar.
4. A cultivator comprising a body carrying a bar having a grooved under tace, diverging tooth bars pivotally mounted in said groove, rods carried by said tooth bars extending through the apertures formed in said bars, an operating bar connected to said rods, apertured standards carried by said bar, and a pin adjustably mounted in said apertured standards for limiting the upward movement of said operating bar.
5. A cultivator having laterally adjustably mounted tooth bar carrying members, vertically arranged tooth bars carried by said members capable of swinging toward and away from each other, and an adjustable connection between said tooth vbar carrying members and said cultivator.
6. A cultivator comprising a body having a tongue, bars adjustably mounted in said body, rods carried by said bars adjustably connected to said tongue, a standard `carried by said tongue, and levers mounted upon said standard having a sliding connection with said rods.
7. A cultivator comprising a body having a tongue carrying a draft bar, said body being provided with a guide-way, bars slidably mounted in said guide-way, means for operating said bar, means for locking said bars in an adjusted position, a connection between said bars and draftV bar, a connection between said bars and tongue, and adjustably mounted tooth bars carried by said bars.
8. A cultivator comprising a body carrying adjustably mounted bars, tooth bars pivotally mounted in said bars, rods carried by said tooth bars extending through said bars, an operating lever connected to said rods, and means for holding said operating lever in its adjusted position.
9. A cultivator, comprising a body provided with laterally extending bars having grooved under faces, spaced tooth bars pivotally mounted in said grooves and depending therefrom, means for adjusting said bars toward and away from each other in order to increase or decrease the inclination thereof, and means for holding said bars in adjusted position.
