Description

- IGNAZ KREIDL, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
n umnnme comrosrrxon.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, Dr. IGNAZ KREIDL, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, resident of Vienna, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, (whose post-office address is -Kohlgasse -9, Vienna XXL) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Enameling Compositions, of which the following is a s ecification.
' The invention relates to the manufacture of enameling compositions. 1
The invention is based upon the discovery that the metal compounds suitable as opa- 'quing agents such as the oxids and the silicates of zirconium, tin, titanium and the like possess in colloidal state a great covering power, owing to the fact that colloids possess physical qualities which these compounds. in a non-colloidal (crystalloid) condition, do not possess, which qualities aid in producing a satisfactory clouding action.
The invention consists therefore in the manufacture of enameling compositions in which as opaquing agents are employed the colloids of themetal compounds suitable as opaqning agents, such as the oxids, the silicziztes of zirconium, tin, titanium and. the li e.
One method to render the oxids and silicates for, example of zirconium suitable as opaquing agents consists in finely grinding them and attacking them by means of acidulated or alkaline water (water containing acids, especially weak acids or alkaline matter). By such treatment the oxids and silicates become colloids. A colloidal forma': tion as sol should be avoided by the presence of small quantities of crystalloids. The attack by the acidor alkaline solutions may be favored by the presence of clay.
carrying thelmethod into effect, the
,opaquing agent-such as an oxid or a silicacontaining compound is ground in a mill in the presence of alkaline or acidulated water with or without addition of small quantities of salts such as metallic salts, which by acting as electrolytes prevent the colloid forma- Speciflcation oi Letters latent.
Application filed April 25, 1914. Serial No. 834,887.
opaquing agent-is obtaine in a colloidal Patented July 21, 1914.
tion as sol the grinding process is continued until the opaquing agent has become colloidal by the influence of the aciduleted or alkaline water. In the manufacture of enameling composition the oxids or silicates employed as opaquing agents may be ground in the mill simultaneously with the enamel mass in the presence of alkaline or acidulated water. This method is less preferable, be-
cause the cnamel mass should not be ground too fine and not too long as it may happen if grinding the enamel mass together with the opaquing agent.
()ther methods,.of course, may bev used for manufacture. of the opaquing agent, the essential feature consistin in that the orm.
The enameling composition is preparedin known manner. The enamel massis melted and ground. The clouding agent is added to the already melted and ground mass. I
\Vhat I claim is:
1. An enameling composition containingas an opaquing agent a colloid of ametal compound/suitable for opaquing purposes.
2. 'An enameling composition containing as opaquing agent a colloid of an oxygencontaining metal compound suitable as opaquing agent.
3. 1m cnameling composition containing as opaqning agent acolloid of a metal oxid suitable for opaquing purposes. j
4. An enameling composition containing as an opaquiiig agent, colloidal zirconium oxid.
5. An enanieling compositioncontaining as opaquing agent a colloid of an oxygencontaining zirconium compound.
.In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
