Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 21, 1914:.
Application filed March 28, 1914. Serial No. 827,992.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN LovAs and SAM SEnA, subjects of the King of-Hungary, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Delivery-Receptacles for Letter- Carriers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to delivery receptacles for letter carriers, and has for its object to provide a receptacle of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for facilitating the delivery of mail matter by a postman.
A further object of the invention is to provide a delivery receptacle, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, to enable mail mattcr to be conveniently carried and delivered by a postman.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a delivery receptacle for mail matter, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, cflicicnt and convenient in its use, readily connected in position and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :-F igure 1 is a perspective view of the delivery receptacle in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a top plan broken away.
teferring to the drawings in detail, the receptacle includes a body portion consisting of end walls 8 and 4;, a vertically disposed partition 5, a top wall formed of two sections 6 and 7, a bottom formed of two sections 8 and 9, a front formed of a cross strip 10 and a pair of doors 11 and 12 which are hinged as at 18 and 14 to the end walls 8 and 4: respectively. The lower end of each of the doors 11 and 12 has hinged thereto a flap 17, which is capable of being projected outwardly, when the doors 11 and 12 are closed. The body portion of the receptacle further includes a back wall 18 provided with a pair of upwardly extending apertured ears 19 and 20. The rear wall 18 is integral with the side walls 3 and l and the bottom sections 8 and 9 are formed integral with the end walls 3 and l. The bottom sections 8 and 9 extend to the partition 5. The sections 6 and 7 of the top are interposed between the end walls 3 and 1 and the partition 5, and are arranged. below the top edges of the said end and rear walls 3, 4: and 18.
Each of the doors 11 and 12 has a knob 21 and are further provided with a glass panel 22. Each of the bottom sections 8 and 9 has formed therein, centrally thereof, a horizontally disposed slot 23, through which extends the neck 2 1 of a longitudinally disposed follower 25, the latter being arranged above the upper face of the bottom section. The neck 24 is connected to a shifting rod 26 therefor, which is arranged in a keeper 27 secured to the lower face of the bottom section. The forward end of the rod 26 is provided with a depending handle 28.
The end wall 4: has formed integral therewith a vertically disposed casing 29,'which is open at its top and forms a compartment 30 for packages or other matter. The rear wall 18 is curvilinear in contour and has secured thereto a pair of rearwardly projecting curved keepers 31 through which extends a body strap 32 having the ends thereof adjustably connected by the huekle 28.
Connected to the ears 19 and 20 are shoulder and breast straps 841 and 35 respectively. The partition 5 forms compartments 36 and 37. A pack of assorted letters is positioned within each of the compartments, between the doors 11 and 12 and the followers 25, and by pulling the bar 26 outwardly, the letters are discharged to the postman through the openings formed when the hinged flaps are elevated.
What we claim is 1. A delivery receptacle for letter carriers comprising a body portion provided with a pair of compartments, shiftable followers mounted upon the bottoms of said compartments, doors for closing said compartments, a flap hinged to the lower end of each of said doors and providing outlets for said compartments when said flaps are elevated whereby when the followers are shifted mail matter will be projected through said openings, and means for connecting said body portion to the carrier.
2. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a compartment receptacle having a curved rear wall and a pair of doors at the front, flaps secured to the lower ends of said doors and adapted when elevated to provide outlets for mail matter within said compartments, shiftable followers carried by the bottom of said receptacle and adapted when shifted outwardly to project mail matter through said compartments, and means for supporting said receptacle from the shoulders of the carrier.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
