Description

H; c. FELTHOUSN.
Refie'ctor.
No." 110,449.. Patented Dec. .2 7, 1870.
tnrh tate y awt effirr,
HENRY e. FELTHOUSEN, OF BUFFALOQ EW YORK,
Letters Patent No. 110,449, dated December 27, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT'IN LENSES OR GLASSES FOR HEAD-LIGHTS.
The Scheule referred to in these Letters Patent ana making part; of the same.
I, HENRY O. FELTIIOUSEN, of the city of Buffalo, in the County of Erie und State. of New York, have invented an Im proved Lens or Glass for Hend-Lghts, of which the following is a specificntion.
A front glnss for hend-lights hus been heretofore used, composed of nseries ot' hollow tubes filled with l't liqnid, and nrrnnged verticzlllyside by side in the form ot'nn :irc corresponding to the cnrve of thefront portion of the htntern whcrein they nre plnced. been found extrenrcly ditlicult to zlrrnnge these tubes so closely together ns to prevent the'light rndiztting between them. 'llhefitting ofthe tubos :und properly securing them in place im'olve considernble ein-e and labor, wh'rle there s It linbility of the tnbes brenliing *from the expnnsion of the lquhl therein.
The object ot my inprovemcnt is to overcome these defecte; :unl y V The invention eonsists in Casting the ghtss solid in one piece, so that it will present the appenrzrnce of n.-
series el' cylimlers, zu'rnhged in the nutnner et' the tnbes before descrihetl, bntjoinerl together tt their point of contact so that n, horizontal section thcrcof will be boundcd en euch side by :L succession of convex lines intcrseetin ezLch other with lhe convex snrfnces which they bound on the two sides opposite to cnch other, as hercinn't-er more pztrtienlnrly shown nu described.
In the nccompanying drnwlng- It has y Fgure I is a. horizontal section of a. lnntem pro.
videcl with my im proved gla-ss.
Fgnre II s a, front elevntion thereot'.
Like letters of reference designate like parts n each of the figures, V A e Arepresents un ordinnrylmitern of eylindricnl form fol* a head-light;
B, the lmnp;
C, the refiector n the back; and
1), my improved glnss or lens in front, m'rnnged so us to form a segment of the lantern-cnse.
'The section shown in l 'lg. I is a. Correct representa.- t-ion of itsform, while both figures show its m'range men't in t-he lnntern, which is similar to that of the front glnss or lens employed in ordinary hend-lghts.
My improved glnss is readily enst of the herenbefore-tlescrlbed form, and can beproduced nt a, much less cost than n gless composed of tnbes, and s less liztble to be broken or to get ont of order, While it remedies.
the defects of the lntter, as before stated.
\Vhnt I clnm ns my invcnton is- A front glass 'for hcnd-lights ns a new article of mm'ml'nctnrc, When cnst solid in a. single piece, and of the form shown and described.
Witnesses: H. O. FELTHOUSEN.
