To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERICK C. N10110:. and MILTON C. STERN, citizens of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county 0f Montgomery and State of Ohio, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Autographic Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein .to the. accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to autographic registers and more articularly to registerS of that type in which a record is simultane- Iousl made on a series of webs of a er one of which is delivered as a check to the customer and another of which is retained in the machine as a record of the transaction.
The object of the invention is to provide a register of this character with means for. printin on one of the webs of paper a blank orm or check to be filled in by the operator and to provide means for actuating this printing mechanism simultaneously with the operation of the feeding mechanism for the aper; and vfurther, to provide an inking diiavice for the rinting mechanism which, together with t e rinting mechanism and the feeding meclianism, will be;
operated from a single actuating member,

It is also an object. of the invention to provide means for inking each part of the. type before it comes in contact with the paper; to provide means to maintain the printing r0 ler normally out of engagement with the platen; and to ositively move the same into engagement t erewith at the bej ginningof the printing operation.
It is a further object of the invention to so construct and support the printing mechanism and inking device therefor that a part of these devices can be moved relatively to the other part thereof to permit of ready access to any part or parts thereof; to provide f means to prevent the movement of the print- 3 ing roller relatively to the platen when it} has been moved into position to permit ac-& cess to the printing devices; and to provide} means for adjusting the inking device to regulate the amount of ink transferred to the printing roller.

The webs of paper are drawn from the several rolls toward the forward end of the machine, about suitable guides, and are carried in superimposed relation over a writing table 6 supported upon'the side members of the main frame. The guides about which the paper passes may be of any suitable character. In the present instance two of these guides are shown as rods 7 supported in the side members of the frame and the third guide comprises a platen 8 of a printing mechanism to be hereinafter described. Suitable feeding mechanism is provided for drawing the paper from the rolls and feeding the same across the writing table. This mechanism is preferably arranged beyond the writing table and is here shown as comprising a pair of feeding roll- -ers. The larger and lowermost of these rollers, which is indicated at 10, is journaled in the side members of the main frame immediately in the rear of the writing table, and has one end of its shaft 11 projecting beyond one of said side members and provided with means for rotating the feed roller. The second and smaller roller 12 is arranged immediately above the roller 10 and is preferably movable into and out of operative relation thereto. To this end the end portions or trunnions 13 of the roller 12 are mounted in slots 14 formed in; brackets 15 extending,
upwardly from the respective side members of the frame.
The brackets are provided with vertical recesses in which are mounted springs lower roller to permit the webs of paper relatively'threto and. for thi Purpose We have, in 'the'present machine, provided two; plates 17 arranged near-the opposite sides of'themachine. and having their forwardends slightly tapered and extending between the shaft of the lower roller and the ,trunnions' of the upper roller. The rear i ends of these plates'are pivotally connected 'to crank arms 18 which are mounted on a shaft 19 journaledin the side members of the frame and having one end projecting beyond one of said side members and provided with a handle or thumb piece 20 by means of which the shaft 19 may be rocked. It will be-apparent that when the shaft 19 is rocked in a direction to move the crank arms 18 and the plates 17 forward the inclined edges of the plates will force the rollers apart and-that when these plates are moved rearward the springs 16 will move the upper roller toward the lower roller; It will further be noted that the frictional contact be tween the plates and the shaft of the lower roller and the trunnions of the upper roller is such that the movement of these rollers about their axes will move the plates rearwardly and permit the upper roller to as sume its operative position relatively to the lower roller, this action taking place on the first movement of the feeding device.
Suitable mechanism is provided for printing' upon one or more of the webs of paper before the part or parts printed upon reach the writing table. In the present instance we have arranged this mechanism to print upon the web of paper passing from the foremost roller, this web being the uppermost of the webs, as they lie upon the writing table, but it will be obvious that any other of the webs could be printed upon by merely shifting the position of the printing mechanism or duplicating the same. As here shown a second lever 50 is 'pivotally mounted on the main frame be tweenthe lever 48 and the printing roller. Both the levers 48 and. 50 are pivotally supported between their ends and the lower ends of the levers are connected one to the other by a link 51 and the upper end of the lever 50 is connected by a link 52 with the supplev mental frame 43 in which the printing roller is mounted. The projection or roller 49 of the lever 48 is located in the rear of the disk '46,:1nd, consequently, it will move rearwardly when forced out of the notch in the disk, and, through the connecting dc vices, will impart a rearward movement to the'printing roller. The link 52 is preferably formed in two parts which are.connected'one to the other by bolt and slot connections, as indicated at 53, thus enabling the length of the link to be adjusted to regm late the position of the printing roller relatively to the platen. The roller 49 is caused to enter the recess in the disk 46 and the printing roller 23 is moved away from the platen by the action of a spring 71 which is connected at one end to the link 51 and at the other end to the main frame. It will be noted that the printing roller is positively moved into its operative position, thus causing the same to be moved into and maintained in an exactly correct position and enabling uniform records to be secured. It will also be noted that the type sheet carried by the printing roller is of a len h slightly greater than the length of the orm which is to be printed. As a result at the abutting ends of this sheet there is a space between the top and bottom of the form which contains no type. Preferably, the printing roller is so arranged with relation -to= inking roller that when the parts are in their idle positions this space between the top and bottom of the type of the form will lie adjacent to the inkinggoll'er'; Consequently, the type of the form will not be in engagement with the inking roller when the machine is idle and there will be no distortion of the type or indentation of the inking roller due to a longcontinued contact between these parts.
The connection between the link 52 and the supplemental frame is shown as comprising a recess 54 formed in the lower side of the forward end of the link and adapted to receive the tie bar 44: at the upper part of the supplemental frame. The link thus forms a latch which serves to normally support. the supplemental frame and the parts carried thereby in their upright or normal positions but which may be released there-- from to permit the supplemental frame to move about theaxis of the shaft 4-5. The movement of the supplemental frame about the axis of the shaft 45 carries the printing roller 22 and the inking roller 35, which is also mounted on this frame, away from the platen and into positions which will permit.
of ready access to all parts of the printing mechanism. To prevent the printing roller from rotating and thus altering its position relatively to the platen 8 when the supplemental frame has been moved into its lowermost or inoperative position a suitable retaining device is provided which is here shown as a pawl 55 loosely mounted on the tie bar 4A and connected thereto by a spring 56 which tends to move the pawl toward the gear 27 of the printing roller. A stop, such as a pin. 57, is secured to the adjacent side member of the main frame in a POSltiOIl to engage the pawl and hold the same out of engagement with the gear when the supplemental frame and the printing roller are in their uppermost or normal positions. When the supplemental frame is moved downward the pawl will be carried out of engagement with the pin and the spring will move it into engagement with the gear, thus locking the gear against movement.
The inking roller is mounted in the supplemental frame 43 in such a manner as to permit of its ready removal should it be de sired to clean the same or renew the ink supply and also to permit of its adjustment relatively to the printing roller so that the amount of ink delivered to the printing roller can be regulated. The inkin 'roller is carried by a shaft 58, the ends 0% which project beyond the corresponding ends of the roller and are mounted in slots 59'formed in the respective side members of the supplemental frame 43. The slots 59 are provided with rearwardly extending openings 60 through which the shaft of the roller may be inserted in the slots 59. These openings are normally closed by arms 61 supported on a shaft 62 journaled in the side members of-the supplemental frame. A lever 63 is rigidly secured to the shaft 62 on the outer side of the main frame, and, b manipulating this lever, the arms 61 can e mofved toward or away from the openings 60 leading to the slots 59. The lever is normally locked in a position to retain the arms 61 across the openings 60 and prevent the removal of the inking roller. This locking device lis here shown as comprising a pawl 64 pivotally mounted on the lever and adapted to engage a notch 65 in the adjacent side member of the supplemental frame when the arms are in their normal positions, that is, in their positions closing the openings to the slots. The slots 59 are preferably inclined toward the printing roller and the tendency of the inking roller is to move away from the printing roller. To hold the inking roller in engagement with the printing roller we have provided arms 66 at the ends of the inking roller which extend beneath the shaft 58 and p support the roller in the desired position.
These arms are mounted upon a shaft 67 j ournaled in the side members of the supple-Q mental frame and this shaft is provided with a slotted crank arm 68. The shaft 45, to which the supplemental frame is rigidly secured, is provided with an arm or bracket 69 having a screw-threaded aperture in which is mounted a screw 70 having its inner end provided with an annular groove to en-, able it to enter the slot in the crank arm 67. The width of the groove in the end of the screw is substantially equal to the thickness of the crank arm and the screw has little or no longitudinal movement relatively to the crank arm and, therefore, any longitudinal movement of the screw will impart a corresponding rocking movement to the shaft 67 and will cause the supporting arms 66 to change their positions relatively to the slots 59.
After the several webs of paper have passed beyond the writing table and the feeding mechanism the two uppermost sheets are removed and the remaining or lowermost web is rewound upon a rewinding roller 72 supported within, the main frame and actuated by suitable gearing 73 from the feeding mechanism, thus retaining this web} and the records made thereon as a permanent record.

In an auto'graphic register, the combination, with a frame, means for supporting a web of paper .on' said frame, a writing table carried by said frame, and feeding mechanism arranged beyond said writing table, of a printing roller carried by said frame and arranged to act on :said web of paper betweenthe support therefor and said writing table, a platen-mounted in said frame, means for .siinultaneously actuating said feeding mechanism and said printing roller, means for imparting movement to said printing roller independently of said feed-v ing mechanism, and means for maintaining said printing roller 111' an inoperative position during said independent movement thereof. 7. means for impartingmovement to said printing roller in one direction simultaneously with the movement of said feeding mechanism and for imparting movement to said printing roller in another direction independently of said feeding mechanism to cause that portion of said printing roller port therefor and said writing table and comprising a platen and a printing roller movable toward and away from said platen, an inking device for said printing roller, means for imparting movement to said printing roller in one direction simultaneously with the movement of said feeding mechanism and for imparting movement to said printing roller in another direction in-- dependently of said feeding mechanism to cause that portion of said printing roller lying between said platen and said inking device to come in-contact with the latter, means for maintaining said printing roller normally in an inoperative position, and means cont-rolled by the movement of said feeding mechanism for moving said printing roller into an operative position.
10. In an autographic register,the combination, with a frame, a support for a web of paper on said frame, a writing table, printing mechanism arranged to act on said web of paper between the support therefor and said writing table and comprising a platen and a printing roller movable toward and away from said platen, an inking device for said printing roller, and feeding mechanism comprising a rotatable shaft. of an operating handld, a connection between said operating handle and said printing mechanism to cause the latter to be actuated upon the movement of said handle in either direction, and means for connecting said handle with said rotatable shaft to cause said feeding mechanism to be actuated when the handle is moved in one direction only.

In an autographic register, the combination, with a frame, asupport for a web of paper on said frame, a writing table, printing mechanism arranged to act on said web of paper between the support therefor and said writing table and comprising a platen and a printing roller movable toward and away from said platen, an inking device for said printing roller, and feeding mechanism comprising a rotatable shaft, of a handle loosely mounted on said shaft, a positive connection between said shaft and said printing mechanism to cause the latter to be actuated when said handle is moved in either direction, and means for connecting said handle to said rotatable shaft when the handle is moved in one direction to cause said feeding mechanism to be actuated.
12. In an autographic register, the combination, with a frame, a support for a web of paper on said frame, a writing table, printing mechanism arranged to act on said web of paper between the support therefor and said writing table and comprising a platen and a printing roller movable toward and away from said platen, an inking de vice for said printing roller, and feeding mechanism comprising a rotatable shaft, of a handle loosely mounted on said shaft, a positive connection between said shaft and said printing mechanism to cause the latter to be actuated when said handle is moved in either direction, means for connecting said handle to said rotatable shaft when the handle is moved in. one direction to cause said feeding mechanism to be actuated, a part carried by said rotatable shaft and operatively connected with said printing roller to move the same toward said platen when said feeding mechanism is actuated, and means to move said printing roller away from said platen when said feeding mechanism is in its normal or idle position.

In an autographic register, the combination, with a frame, a support for a web of paper on said frame, a writing table, printing mechanism arranged to act on said web of paper between the support therefor and said writing table and comprising a" platen and a printing roller movable toward and away from said platen, an inking device for said printing roller, and feeding mechanism comprising a rotatable shaft, of a handle loosely mounted on said shaft, a positive connection between said shaft and said printing mechanism to cause the latter to be actuated when said handle is moved in either direction, means for connecting said handle to said rotatable shaft when the handle is moved in one direction to cause said feeding mechanism 10 be actuated, a disk rigidly secured to said shaft and having a recess in the edge thereof, a lever pivot-ally mounted on said frame and having a part adapted to enter the recess in said disk, and a connection between said lever and said p ri nti u g roller.

In an autographic register, the combination, with a frame, a support for a web of paper on said frame, a writing table, printing mechanism arranged to act on said web of paper between the support therefor and said writing table and comprising a platen, and a printing roller,. an inking device for said printing roller, and feeding mechanism comprising a. rotatable shaft, of a handle loosely mounted on said shaft, a
positive connection between said shaft and said printing mechanism to cause the latter to be actuated when said handle is moved in either direction, means for connecting said handle to said rotatable shaft when the handle is moved in one direction to cause said feeding mechanism to be actuated, a disk rigidly secured to said shaft and having a recess in the edge thereof, a lever pivotally mounted on said frame and having a part adapted to enter the recess in said disk, and an adjustable connection between said lever and said printing roller. In an autographic register, the combination, with a frame, a writing table therefor, a support for a. web of paper, meansfor feeding said paper over said writing table, and a platen mounted on said frame, of a printing roller mounted for bodily movement on said frame, and means actuated in unison with said feeding means to move said roller bodily toward said platen.

In an autographic register, the com-' bination, with a main frame, awriting table therefor, a support for a web of paper, and means for feeding said paper over said writing table, of a supplemental frame movably mounted on said main frame, a printing roller carried by said supplemental frame, and means for actuating said supplemental frame in unison with said feeding means to move said printing roller into and out of operative relation with said web of .paper.

In an autographic" register, the combination, with a main frame, a writing table therefor, a support for a web of paper, means for feeding said paper over said writing table, and a platen mounted on said main frame, of a. supplemental frame movably mounted on said main frame, a printing roller carried by said supplemental frame, means to actuate said, supplemental frame to move said printing roller toward and away from said platen, and means for locking said printing roller against rotation when said frame has been actuated to move said printing roller away from said platen.

In an autographic register, the combination, with a main frame, a writing table therefor, a support for a web of paper, means for feeding said paper over said writing table, and a platen mounted on said main frame, of a supplemental frame movably mounted on said main frame, means to actuate said supplemental frame to move said printing roller toward and away from said platen, a pawl to hold said printing roller against rotation, and means controlled by the movement of said supplemental frame to actuate said locking device.
