SHUTTER-OPERATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
"Patented July 21, 19
Application filed October 2 1912. Serial'No. 723,328.
To all whom it may; concern:
Be it known that I,' Jo.\cn u T. Hope FtYXIQLZt QltlZG-H of the United States, resid- '1ngvat the city of Kalamazoo, Michigan, liave inventcdcertaurnew and usefuh Impro .e'men ts in.Slmtter-Operating Devices, of ich the following is a specification. v. This invention relates to iu'iprove-ments in shutter operating devices. a
The main objects of my invention are,- First, to'provide an improved automatic shutter operating device. Second; to .provideo-a1improved shutter actuating mechanism by means of which the shutter is auto' matically opened and closed. Third, to pro vide'an improved automatic shutter actuating mechanism by means of which th opening and closing of the shutter is efiectively t-imeda Fourth, to'provide a device having these advantages, which simple in structrre and operation.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from." the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and following specification.
The invention is clearly pointed out in the claims.
A structure which a n'eferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompaIrving drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I a side elevation of astructure emhmlying the features of my invention, a camera shutter being: illustrated i'nceorinee tion therewith. Fig. II is a. detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line of'lfiigr. 'ifl. l ig'. it! is :1 horizontal section on a line cnrrcspondihe to line 3---3 of Fig. illr Fig. lV is a detail section through one of the valve; on a line corresponding to line -l---i of Fig. ill, the valve plug being shown in full lines. Fig-5. 'V is a detail secdcfincd and tion on. a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. IV. V
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the sccl'ion-lines.
Referring to the drawing, the barrel or cylinder 1 is connected by the tube 24 to the pnemuatic shutter engine 25. This shut-- tcr engine 25 is of the well-known plunger means described in the type such as is commonly actuated. by means of a hand bulb. engines is well understood, I-do not describe the same in detail herein.
The nipple 23 connecting the tube 24 to the cylinder 1 is disposed at one end of the cylinder 1. The cylinder is provided with an inlet valve at its outer end and an exhaust valve at its inner end, that is, the end to which the tube 24 is connected.
Reciprocating within the cylinder between these valves, is a piston e'r having a rod 2 arranged through the packing gland 11 in the head 10 of the cylinder. The rod 2 is provided with a finger piece 3. The p ston is actuated by means of the coiled spriiy 9. The piston shown in its outer position. To retain the piston. in this position, I pro- \ide a catch 12 whichis pivoted at 13 to engage a keeper 4 on the piston rod.
lhitivvcen the valves 7, the cylinder is irovided with a port. or opening (3 across which the piston rcciprocates. T he casings of the valves 7 are 15 opening into the cylinder and with ports 16 opening to the atmosphere.
The rotary valve plugsllS are provided with peripheral tapered passages 1.). See Fig. V. passages is to enable theaccura-te adjustment of the valves and thus secure the ing. The valves are provided witlr' (ii As the structure of these The object of thus forming the valve provided with passages or'ports like linger pieces 17 having indexnumerals thereon. Index fingers 1.7 coact with the index disks,
In the operation of my improved actuatin device, the piston is pushed to its outer position as shown in the drawing, by means ofthc finger piece 3 on the stem 2. This compres the actuating spring 9, thus siorlug power for actuating the piston. The valve at the outer end of the cylinder is set v for the number of seconds it desired shall iutter is opened and the end of the cylinder is set elapse before the s! valve at the inner for the nunilrr of seconds it is desired that the shutter wall remain open. .Vhcr. the. catch 12 is rdeased, the piston is actuated by the spring, its movement until it passes the port (3 being timed by the admission of air are provided to.
to the cylinder below the piston through the. I
valve at the outer end of the cylinder.
\Vhen the piston passes the port 6, the air is compressed in the inner end of the cylinder by theaction of the piston and the shutter engine actuated to open the shutter and .is held in its actuating position until the Biston reaches the inner ,end'of its stroke. uring this periodof the movement of the piston it is controlled by the exhaust valve at the inner end of the cylinder,-thus timing the exposure. By this means, the device may be set so that the 0 erator may position himself to be included in the pitcure.
' In the structure illustrated, the index for the valves is designed for the valve in th closing position as shown in Fig. V. It is evident that it might be designed for the valve in closing position when the passage 19 is brought out of register with the passage 15.
I have illustrated and described n proveinents in a. simple embodiment, have not attemptedto illustrate o'r'describe various modifications in s'tructuraldetails which" I contemplate-as such modifications will be' readily understood by thoseskilledin the" art to which this invention relates from the disclosure'here made-Q I desire; however,'
to be understood asjcl'aimingjnyfimprove ments specifically in the'fornitilliistrated as] well as broadly pended claims; Having thus I claim is'new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:' j 1.
