BARBERS FAN-SUPPORT AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14L, 191d.
Application filed April 4, 1913. Serial No. 758,991.
Be it known that we, JOHN LEON NEW- HOUSE and EMIL RUNKEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Pine Island, in the county of Goodhue and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbers Fan-Supports and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fan supports; and the objects and nature of the invention will be readily understood'by those skilled in the art in the light of the following explanation of the accompanying drawings illustrating what we now believe to be our preferred embodiment from among other formations, con
structions and arrangements within the spirit and scope of the invention.
A particular object ofthe invention is to provide a spring drum, or the like, having a flexible connection wound thereon with an extended end to which any suitable fan is or can be attached, and a supporting device for the drum, adapted to be attached to the ceiling or other support and having a depending guide for said connection embodying a vertically adjustable guide and stop member arranged to engage the fan and limit up its upward movement against the tension of the spring acting on the winding drum, so that the support can depend from the ceiling and normally maintain the fan within easy reach of a barber, for instance, whereby the barber can reach the fan from his position beside his chair and pull the same down for use in fanning his customer, thereby unwinding the fan supporting connection from the drum and drawing the same down through said guide, and whereby the fan when released by the barber will be automatically drawn back to normal position at the lower end of the guide and stop as the drum winds up said connection.
The invention consists in certain novel features in construction and in combinations and arrangements as more fully and particularly set forth and specified hereinafter.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:Figure 1, is a perspective View, Fig. 2, is a sectional elevation. Figs. 3 and 4, are detail views.
In carrying our invention into effect we provide an elongated straight tubular bracket or guide 1, at its upper end carried by (and radially opening into the interior of) an annular band or open end cylinder 2. This cylinder is provided with and supported by a wall plate or base 20, adapted to be fixedly secured to a ceiling or wall with the hereinbefore mentioned parts carried. thereby and depending therefrom. An elongated sleeve or tube 3, is arranged and longitudinally adjustable in the member 1, and is securedin' position projecting down the desired distance from member 1, by clamping screw 4, adjustable radially through the lower end of member 1, into holding engagement with the surface of tube 3.
A spring actuated rotary winding drum 5, is removably arranged in the annular band 2, of the supporting bracket. This drum is mounted to revolve on a center pin or axis 6, arranged between removable heads 7 having flanges fitting in the band 2, and closing the same and confining the winding drum in the band and between the heads. A flexible con nection 8, is wound on said drum and has one end secured thereto while the free portion of the connection extends longitudinally through the depending tubular portion of the supporting bracket and thr gh the adjustable tube 3, and at its lower'extremity below the lower end of said tube 3, is secured to the handle of a fan 9 (or other suitable article) to support the same in an elevated position when not in use. The spring actuating the drum constantly tends to rotate the drum in a direction to wind the connection thereon and hold the fan against the lower end of the tube 3.
In the particular example illustrated, the drum is provided with a grooved or flanged periphery to receive the flexible connection, while the drum is hollow to receive and in-- close the drum rotating spring 10, having one end secured to the drum while the opposite end of the spring is secured or confined to the axis on which the drum rotates. instance, this axis can be longitudinally slotted or bifurcated to receive and confine the spring end and to permit removal of the drum and spring therefrom. In this particular example said axis is shown fixed to 105 and carried by one end head so that on the removal of the other end head, the drum can be slipped from said axis and from the annular band of the bracket'for adjustment or repair of parts.
The device described is particularly in tended to be secured to the ceiling of a bar- For ber shop or the like, to always maintain a fan out of the way andyet within convenient-reach of the barbers position beside his chair so that when the fan is desired for drying a customers face or hair, or other purposes, the barber can grasp the fan and draw the same down to position for use and can freely use the fan, even while attached to the flexible connection. When the barber is through with the fan, he releases his hold thereon, and the spring drum will wind up the connection and pull the fan back to its normal position at the lower end of the adjustable guide and stop tube. This tube can be adjusted vertically and secured to determine the elevation at which the fan will be normally held by the apparatus.
It is evident that various changes and modifications might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention and hence we do not wish to limit ourselves to the exact disclosure hereof.
What we claim is I 1. In combination, in a fan support, a supporting bracket providedwith an annular housing and with a rigid tubular member opening into and projecting from the housing, a removable head closing one end of the housing and provided with and carrying a fixed drum shaft longitudinally slotted, a removable head closing the opposite I end of the housing, a winding drum confined on said shaft by said heads, a drum actuating spring having one end removably engaging said slot of the shaft, said drum having a flexible connection wound thereon with a free end extending through said tubular member and adapted to be attached to a fan, said tubular member provided with a stop to limit the movement of the fan toward the drum, and means whereby said stop is adjustable longitudinally with respect tosaid member, substantially as described.
2. In combination, in a fan support, a bracket provided with a winding drum housing havin a removable head normally closing one en of the housing, a drum shaft arranged within the housing and fixed to the opposite end head thereof, said shaft having a longitudinal slot opening through its free end, a removable winding drum mounted on said shaft, and provided with an actuating spring having a portion removably entering said slot of the shaft, said drum having a flexible connection wound thereon with a free. end adapted to have a fan secured thereto, and a flexible connection guide and fan stop projecting from and carried by said housing.
3. A fan support comprising a bracket adapted to be secured to a ceiling, or other support, and comprising a winding drum housing, a winding drum mounted in said housing, means supporting the same therein, a tubular member projecting from and carried by said housing, a longitudinally-adjustable fan-stop tube arranged longitudi- 1 nally of said tubular member, and means for securing said tube in the desired longitudinal ad ustment with respect to said member, said drum adapted to carry a flexible connection extending therefrom freely through said member and tube and at its free end beyond said tube adapted to be secured to a fan,
4. In combination, in a fan support,
supporting bracket provided with an annular housing and with a rigid tubular member opening into and projecting from the housing, having a head closing one end of the housing and provided-with and carrying a fixed drum shaft, a removable head closing the opposite end of the housing, a winding drum confined on said shaft by said heads, a drum-actuating spring having one end removably coupled to the shaft, said drum having a flexible connection wound thereon with a free end extending through said tubular member and adapted to be attached to a fan, said tubular member provided with a sto to limit the movement of the fan toward the drum, and means whereby said stop is adjustable toward and from the drum, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
