AIR-CUSHION FOR RUBBER STAMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 14, 1914.
Application filed January 23, 1914. Serial No. 813,942.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CALDER C. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air-Cushions for Rubber Stamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing and particularly to a stamp pad of the hand or machine type, it being the purpose of the inventor to utilize the cushion for the stamping devices forming the subject matter of this invention with restriction.
An object of the present invention is to produce a cushion for stamping machines or devices having a plurality of air cells associated with a yieldable agent forming the said cells so that when the stamping device is used, benefit of the air cushion and yieldable material will result, so that pressure applied to the stamping device or that portion thereof carrying the type, will be equalized over the printing surface, thereby making the outline of the letters practically uniform.
A further object of this invention is to produce a type cushion formed in sheets with well defined joints between sections thereof, in order that a portion of the sheet may be removed coextensive with the requirements of use, each section being com-- plete and elfective for the purpose of producing the air and yielding cushion heret fore stated, the said sheet of cushioningmterial being provided with double partitions at each joint rendering it possible to sever a section therefrom in its completed stat? whereas the intermediate double partitions: act as air chambers when the cushion is cor. pressed.
It is furthermore an object of this invention to produce a pad of the character noted having a series of longitudinally disposed ribs and transversely disposed ribs extending between each pair of longitudinally disposed ribs and transversely disposed ribs forming partitions, the alternate transverse partitions being of less height than those therebetween so that the applicability of the resultant structure is augmented.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspective of a hand stamp with a cushion embodyingthe invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 illus trates an underneath plan view of the cushion; Fig. 3 illustrates a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2, a fragment of the said cushion only being shown; and Fig. 4 illustrates a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings 5 denotes any appro priate base of a stamping device and as the base and parts associated therewith for its manipulation or operation form no part of the subject matter of the present invention, it will not be described in detail. The pad has a plain outer surface formed by the outer wall 6 adapted to receive and support the type or letters 7 and as the manner of applying the letters or type to the pad forms no part of the present invention, further detailed description thereof is omitted.
The pad is preferably formed in large sheets so that an appropriate sized pad may be cut therefrom thus enabling the manufacturer of stamps to make the pad of the proper dimensions to suit particular requirements. The outer wall 6 has formed therewith a series of longitudinally disposed pairs of ribs 8, 8, the adjacent ribs of each pair being closer together than the ribs of each pair are, when the wall 6 is severed between the two adjacent ribs 8, and a pad in its completed state is formed, it being observed from an inspection of Fig. 4 that the said longitudinally disposed ribs are slightly spaced apart and that an air cushion is formed between them when pressure is applied to the stamping apparatus.
There is a series of transversely disposed ribs integral with the outer wall 6 and with the longitudinally disposed ribs 9 and 10 between each pair of longitudinally disposed ribs 8, the transversely disposed ribs 9 being equal in height to the longitudinally disposed ribs 8, whereas those ribs 10 intermediate the ribs 9 are of less height than the said ribs 9, which arrange ment produces a full pneumatic effect, while adding to the flexibility of the cushion.
It is the purpose of the inventor to make the material for forming pads in sheets of tiori will enable those skilled in the art to "certain length and it is obvious from an inspection of Fig. 4 that if the material shown therein were severed between any two of the adjacent longitudinally disposed ribs 8, a complete pad would be formed of reduced size as compared with the one shown in Fig. 4, yet the said severed portion would have all of the characteristics inherent in the larger pad. 7
It is thought that the foregoing descripmanufacture the pads or to utilize the same and it is also thought that the advantages claim of the patent.
I claim In a stampingdevice, a cushion compris-' wall between the last mentioned ribs for producing a cushion of the required size, transversely disposed partitions between the longitudinally disposed ribs of each pair, the alternate transversely disposed ribs be ing of less height than the companion transversely disposed ribs. of the invention will be apparent, it being Q understood that changes in the proportions and details of construction may be resorted to withoutd'eparting from the scope of the CALDER o. one so Witnesses:
