HEAT-REGULATING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that l, ARTHUR P. FELSBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heat-Regulating Devices; and I do hereby declare the follarly, to a novel time-operated and controlled mechanism which operates automatically to open and close the dampers and doors of furnaces, boilers, and thelike, and
t to regulate the cold air supply and the draft of such heating apparatus.
The invention has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed and elficiently operatingmechanism for the purposes herein-above stated; and, the invention has for its further object to provide a novel and simple means for automatically releasing and controlling an arbor of a clockmechanism, and to provide a means between the said arbor the damper-rod and bar of the furnace, the action of the parts being such that at night the cold-air draft means beneath the grate may be shut oil, but is automatically operated in the morning by the setting-mechanism of the clock-mechanism, for permitting a draft of cold air beneath the grate and throu h the fire of the furnace. Other objects'of t is invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the present invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel'time-controlled heat-regulating device hereinafter set forth;
and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction ofthe same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto and which form an essential part of the said specification.

The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a heating furnace, and a general view of the time-controlled damper and door-operating mechanism, showing one embodiment of the principles of the present invention, said view representing the arts in their relative positions when the resh air-draft is shut off I from the furnace. Fig. 2 is a rear face view and part vertical sectional representation of the speed-controlling mechanism em-' ployed; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional representation of a portion of the furnace, said section being represented as being taken above the fire door, showing said door in top elevation and open, and showing also in connection therewith a holding means for retaining the door'in its open position, and a spring for closing the door when the doorholding means has been withdrawn from its engaged relation with the door.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the
reference-character 1 indicates any suitable form of furnace provided with the usual damper-rod or bar 2, and the smokepipe or flue '3 with which is connected the damperplate 4:, the furnace being also provided with the usual lower gate or damper 5.
Secured in any desired and suitable position at a point above the furnace is a shelf 6 upon which is suitably mounted a suitable clock 7 This clock which is of any suitable construction has the usual arbor-controlling mechanism which is of the usual construction found in alarm-clocks, and the reference-character 8 indicates an arbor, normally held against rotation by said mechanism, but the speed of its rotation being controlled and regulated by the said mechanism, when said mechanism acts in the manner usual in alarm-clocks. This arbor is provided usually within the shell or casing of the clock, with a suitably formed sprocket-wheel or disk, as 9, over which and with the sprockets of engagement the links of a pull-chain 10. One end portion, as 11, is suitably which are in operative attached to the end-portion 12 of the said damper-rod or bar 2, and upon its other free end-portion the said pull-chain 10 is provided with a ring or other suitably. formed pull-piece 13.
Attached to the opposite endportion of the said damper-rod or bar 2 is a fiexibleconnection 14, sald flexible connection extending in a downward direction from the said rod or bar 2 and is attached at its lower end to the lowergate or damper 5 for opening and closing the same in a manner, as'will be readily understood from an inspection of Fig. l of the drawings. The previouslymentioned damper-gate 1 is actuated by means of a chain or flexible connection 15 which is attached at its one end to the said gate at and at its other end to a part of the rear end-portion of the damper-rod or bar 2.
When the damper-gate 4: is in its opened position, and the lower gate or damper 5 is closed, it is also desirable that the fire-door 16 of the furnace should be held open. To accomplish this result, the door 16 is provided with an upwardly extending stud or post 17, and pivotally connected with the furnace, by means of a pin 18 arranged in a pair of perforated ears or lugs 19 is a rod 20, said rod having an eye 21 by means of which its free end-portion can be brought into removable holding engagement with the said stud or post- 17 of the fire-door 16. The said rod 20 is provided with another eye, as 22, to which is attached the lower end-portion of a flexible connection 23-, said raised lowere and its other and front end-portion 1S raised, the flexible connection 23 pulls flexible connection being suit-ably attached to the damper-rod or bar 2, substantially in the manner and at the point represented in Fig. 1 of the drawings. It will be seen from an inspection of said Fig. 1, that when the ortion of the said rod or bar 2 is upon the pivoted rod 20, so as to lift its eye 21 out of its holding engagement with the stud or post- 17 of the door 16, and.the latter is thereupon closed by the action of a. coiledspring 26, which is suitably attached at its one end to the saiddoor and at its other end to the furnace.

thereby closing the-lower-ga'te or damper 5, while the draft-checking damper 4 W111 be held in its open position with relation to the smoke-pipe or flue 3. As soon, however, when at a predetermined time, the arborcontrolling mechanism acts, in the usual manner in alarm-clocks, the weight of the raised end-portion of the damper-bar or rod 2 causes the arbor 8 to revolve so that the various parts will act automatically and in such a manner, that the gate or damper 4 closes and the lower gate or damper 5 will open, the fire-door-lG, if in its opened position, also closing automatically in the manner herein-before stated, and a free and clear draft for the fresh air through the fire upon the grate will be the result.
The speeds of the rotary movements of the arbor 8 and s rocket-wheel 9, after the arbor-speed-cont-ro ling-mechanism acts at the predetermined time, are controlled and regulated by the action of the said mechanism, so that the damper-bar 2 and the part connected therewith and operated thereby will have a comparatively slow and regulated movement, thereby preventing sudden hanging and jarring noises, and also preventing damage to the damper-bar controlling diaphragm, and to the chain, as will be clearly evident.
Vith slight changes and modifications, the time controlled damper-regulating mechanism embodying the principles of the present. invention may be applied to any suitable furnace, boiler, or the like. It will be obvious, therefore-that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification and as defined in the clauses of the claim which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the foregoing specification, nor do I confine myself to the exactdetails of the construction of the said parts,
as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim:-
1. The combination with means for operating the draft-regulating devices of a furnace, of a clock comprising a casing formed with an opening, and an arbor-speed-controlling mechanism, an arbor normally held against rotation by said mechanism, a sprocket-wheel 'mounted upon said arbor, and a link-chain extending into and through the opening in said casing and arranged to run upon said sprocket-wheel and in engagement with the sprocket-teeth thereof, said chain being fastened at one end to the means for operating said draft-regulating devices, all arranged that the free end-portion of the said chain when pulledrotat'es. said sprocket-wheel in onedirection for setting. said draft-regulating devices, and the other portion'of the chain when thespeed controlling mechanism acts being, actuated by the weight of the means for operating the draft-regulating devices while its movement is also controlled and regulated by said speed-controlling mechanism.
2. The combination with a damper-rod of a furnace for operating the draft-regulating devices of the furnace, of a clock comprising a casing formed with an opening, and an arbor speed-controlling mechanism, an arbor normally held against rotation by said mechanism, a sprocket-wheel mounted upon said arbor, and a link-chain extending into and through the opening in said casing and arranged to run upon said sprocket- Wheel and in engagement with the sprocketteeth thereof, said chain being fastened at one end to said damper-rod, all arranged that the free end-portion of the said chain when pulled rotates said sprocket-wheel in one direction for setting said draft-regulating devices, and the other portion of the chain when the speed-controlling mechanism acts being actuated by the Weight of the damper-rod While its movement is also controlled and regulated by said releasing and speed-controlling mechanism.
3. In a gate-opening means, in combination with a gate, a clock comprising a casing formed with an opening, and an arborspeed-controlling mechanism, an arbor normally held against rotation by said mechanism, a sprocket-wheel mounted upon said arbor, and a link-chain extending within and through the opening in said casing and arranged to run upon said sprocket-wheel and in engagement with the sprocket-teeth thereof, said chain being connected at one end with said ate, and all arranged that one portion of t e chain when pulled rotates said sprocket-wheel in one direction for setting said gate, and the other portion of the chain when the speed-controlling mechanism acts being actuated by said gate while its movement is also controlled and regulated by said speed-controlling mechanism.
