To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. lmmson, citizen of the United States, resldmg at Bloomfield, in the county of Greene and State of Indiana, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invention relates to improvements'in posts, and has for one of its ob ects to sunplify and improve the construction andancrease the efficiency and utility of devices of this character, and produce a post whlch may be constructed of any suitable size and adapted to posts employed for varlous puroses. p Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed post formed of a co-acting frame and an angularly ar ranged brace connected to the frame whereby the frame is reinforced and supported and any tendency to warp, twist or deflect WVith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction as herelnafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the improved posts. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the concrete base block 1n section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail on the line 83 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 1s a section on the line 4:4: of Fig. 3.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved ost may be constructed of any required size and employed for various purposes such as fence posts, gate posts,
telegraph posts, trolley line posts, and the form feet to assist in holding the post in the ground or in a concrete base, as hereafter explained. For an ordinary fence post a section of the channel bar is employed of about three fourths of an inch in width, but this dimension may be varied if required. The section of the channel bar to form the post is bent intermediate its ends into elongated U-shape and the terminals of the bar bent outwardly at rightangles to form the feet 12l3 with the channels of the bar presented inwardly,
Located between the sides 10'-11 of the post is a brace member formed of a single bar 14 bent intermediate the ends into reversely angular portions with the brace at its bends engaging in the channels of the sides as shown. At its lower end the brace member is bent at right angles to the longitudinal plane of the post as shown at 15 andv the terminal of the right angle portion :bent upwardly as shown at 16 against the inner face of one of the channel bars. At its upper end the brace 14 is slightly curved to conform substantially to the bend of the main post as shown at 17. To secure the brace firmly to the sides 10ll the material of the sides, or the flanges which form the channel, are compressed or bent inwardly over the brace at its bends as represented at 18, the material of the flanges being thus stretched and tightly crimped against and over the outer edges of the brace material. This arrangement forms a. very rigid and firm holding means between the brace and the side members of the post, and these portions require no other fastening means. The flanges of the side members are likewise compressed in the same manner over the terminals 16-17 as shown. By this means it will be obvious that a, very strong and durable and compact post is produced in which the minimum of material is used with the maximum of strength and durability. The brace member 14 being arranged in oblique sections firmly braces the post and enables the post to firmly resist all tendency to twist or be deflected or the parts to be otherwise displaced.
In practice the lower portion of the post including the outer terminals l2-13 is emat opposed portions being inwardly forced at a plurality of separated points to form bedded in a mass of concrete represented conventionally at 19, and designed to be embedded in-the, ground where the post is erected. By this means the out-turned ter-' minals.12"13 form anchors to firmly the post within its base. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim' is: l 1. Apost comprising a .body formed of channel bar bent to form spaced sides, each of said sides having inwardly directed flangeson itsmargin, and a brace comprising a flatvbar bent into a plurality of reversely directed, angularly. related portions hearing at the bends in the channels formed by the channels of the bar and having a width equal to the width between said flanges, the lateral flanges of the said sides lips engaging over the inner faces of the angular portions of the brace.
2. A post comprising a body including and lips formed upon the sides by bending in opposite portions of the flangesat spaced points, said lips engaging over the inner faces of the angular portionsof said brace.
3. A post including a body formed from a single length of channel bar bent to form spaced sides, each of said sides having inwardly directed flanges on its margin, the
lower ends of the legs or sides being outwardly bent, and a brace comprising a flat bar bent into a plurality of reverselydirected, angularly related portions bearing at the bends in the channels formed by the flanges of the bar and havin a width equal to thewidth between said flanges, the lateral flanges of the said sides at opposite portionsbeing inwardly forced at a plurality of separated points to form lips engag ing over the inner faces of the angular portions of the members, the upper terminal end of said brace being inserted between the flanges of one side or leg and being angu.
