FENDER.
Be it known that I, JULIUS E. Brno, a citizen of the United States, residing at F airchance, in the county of Fayette, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fenders, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to fenders for vessels and has for its object to provide an inexpensive and effective device capable of being readily attached to and detached from a vessel which will push away smaller masses of ice and will protect the vessel from injury from striking larger masses.
lVith these and other objects hereinafter set forth in view my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of a fender embodying my invention shown in position on the bow of a vessel. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the construction shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the fender which is carried by the cutwater. Fig. 41 is a horizontal sectional view on line ([(o of Fig. 2 and Fig. 5, is a vertical sectional view on line b? of Fig. 1.

3 indicates a vertical bar preferably provided with a buffer face 1 made up of an upper portion 1-. an intermediate portion 1? and a lower portion 4 Between the portions 1 and 4 and between the por-v tions 1 and 4- the bar 3 is provided with horizontal bores 5 and 6 through which extend. rods 7 and 8 headed at their outer ends and each having its inner end screwthreaded into a block of suitable ma terial 9 preferably nearly spherical in form and having a V-shaped recess 10 in its rear to fit a plate 11 which is bent to fit over the cutwater of the vessel. On each of the rods 7 and 8 is arranged a coiled spring 12 each bearing at its forward end against the bar 3 and at its rear end bearing against one of the blocks 9, these springs acting to hold the bar 3 normally ahead of the outwater a distance depending on the length of the rods 7 and 8.

vided each secured at one end to an eyebolt 14 carried by the bar 3 and at the other end to an eye bolt 15 carried by the plate 11. In order to hold the bar 3 from vertical movement flexible connections 16 and 17 here shown as chains extendingrespectively from an eye bolt 18 at the upper end of bar 3 to an eye bolt 19 secured to the cutwater above the level of the upper end of the bar 3, and from an eyebolt 20 at the lower end by itself and will protect the bow of the vessel effectively but I prefer to use also. the fenders shown on the sides of the bow. These side fenders are similar in construction to the cutwater fenders already described except that the bar is arranged horizontally instead of vertically. The side fenders each comprise a bar 25 provided on its outer face with a buffer face 26 made up of end- portions 26, and 26 and intermediate portions 26 Between the end portions and the intermediate portions the bar 25 is provided with bores 27 and 28 through which extend rods 29 and 30 having heads at their outer ends and having their inner ends secured in plates 31 and 32 which are adapted to be secured to the sides of the vessel in any convenient manner and each carrying a coiled spring 4L0 bearing at its outer end against the bar 25 and at its innor end against plate 31 or 32. The bars 25 are supported in position by flexible connections 33 each secured at its outer end to an eyebolt 35 near the forward end of the bar and secured at its inner end to an eyebolt 36 on the side of the vessel, and by flexible connections 34 each secured at its outer end to an eyebolt 37 near the rear end of the bar, and secured at its inner end to an eye bolt 38 on the side of the vessel. These side fenders will normally be held in the position in which they are shown that is with the-bars 25 held away from the side of the vessel by the springs 40. If the vessel comes in contact with a considerable mass of ice the portions of it which pass on either side of the cutwater and which would be apt to damage the side of the vessel will strike one or the otherof these side fenders and be held away from the vessel the springs L0 yielding to any severe impact preventing any serious shock.
Having thus described my invention what I, claim is, I I
1. In a detachable fender for vessels, the combination with a, bar having openings therein, rods extending through the openings having their'outer ends headed and having their inner ends arranged to have a .bearingagainst a portion of the vessel and eachprovided with a spring between the bar and the vessel, detachable flexible connec tions between the bar and the vessel and flexible connections between the bar and a portion of the fender. 2. In a detachable fender for vessels, the combination with a bar having openings therein and arranged vertically in front of the cutwater of the vessel, a plate detachably fitting over the cutwater, rods carried by the plate arranged to extend through the openings int-he bar, springs carried by the rods between the plate and the bar and' therein and arranged vertically in front of the cutwater of the vessel, a plate slidably mounted over the cutwater, rodscarried by the plate arranged to extend through the openings in the bar, springs carried by the rods between the plate and the bar and flexi ble connections between the plate and the bar and flexible connections between the bar and the vessel. 7
