T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CYRUs Evans, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, and Josnrn H. DioKiNsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of li lontclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, respectively, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Logging-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates broadly and generally to new and useful improvements in logging engines, and more particularly to that character or type adapted for use in connection with an inhaul and outhaul cableway, which usually includes a log pulling line operable to haul logs from a remote point to a point in proximity to the engine, and an outhauling means for outhauling the log attaching means to a point from which the logs are to be inhauled.
The primary object of the present invention is to construct an improved engine which will be simple in construction, in which all of the line operating drums will be located compactly within the supporting frame, and in which the driving means for the drums will be so arranged and operable in such a manner that all of the lines operated upon and controlled by the drums will come off the top of the drums, 2'. 6., be tangential to the circumferential surface of the top portion of the drums.
The invention consists in the improved construction to be fully described hereinafter and the novelty of which will-be pari ticularly pointed out and distinctly claimed. 1
We have fully illustrated our invention, in the accompanying drawings to be taken as a part of this specification and wherein Figure 1 is a View in side elevation, partly in section, of a construction embodying our invention; Fig. .2 is a plan view, partly in section, of the improved engine; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, A designates generally a substantial framework of proper dimensions and strength to suit it for the purposes for which it is employed, said framework being adapted to support the several parts of the improved logging engine. While the exact design of this frame need not be confined to any particular form we prefer that the same be rectangular in general contour, the same including longitudinal side members 1, 2 joined at one end by an end. cross piece 3, and at the other end by a platform 4:,
the latter constituting a support for a steam generating boiler l3, and engine cylinders G, the latter being located on opposite sides of the boiler. The space bounded by said platform, the side pieces 1, 2 and the end piece 3, is longitudinally divided by a central member 5 connecting said platform and end piece, whereby the frame between the side members is divided into two spaces in which the rope operating drums are located, as will be presently described.
In suitable bearings 6, '6, 6 mounted in the side pieces 12 and the center member 5, in front of the boiler is a transversely arranged horizontal driving shaft 7, on each end of which outside the main frame, is mounted a crank disk 8, carrying a crank pin 9, each connected by a pitman 10 with the piston rod 11 of a piston of one of the engine cylinders C. On the power shaft adjacent each of the crank disks is an eccentric 12 for operating the valve rod 13 for the valve 1% of the engine on that side of the frame. The engine parts and driving connections just described form no part of our present invention, and are shown and described merely in order that the operation of the complete apparatus will be more easily un derstood.
On the driving shaft 7 adjacent the central frame member 5 is fixed a driving pinion 15, which meshes with a driven gear 16, which is keyedon a horizontal shaft 17, having bearing in alining bearings 18, at the upper portions of pillars 19, on the side and center members of the frame, said shaft 17 being located in a horizontal plane above the driving shaft and in a vertical plane forward of said shaft. This gear 16 is provided in one of its faces with an annular friction element 20, preferably in the form of wood friction blocks having outer inclined surfaces 20*, and mounted on the shaft 17 on the same side of the center member as the said gear 16, is a rope drum 21, having end flanges 22, the one adjacent the gear 16 being provided with an annular friction member 23, having an inclined face 24 adapted slide rod 37, mounted in an aperture in the to cooperate with the inclined face of the friction clement on the 16. This drum is mounted for movement longitudinally of the shaft 17, and for this purpose we employ a thrust mechanism consisting of a crosspiece 25 located in a slot 26 in the shaft 17 a thrust collar 27 being arranged between the cross-piece and the drum, and both the cross-piece and the collar being housed in a recess in the end of the drum, as shown in Fig. 3. Extending longitudinally through the shaft is a thrust pin 28 which is engaged by a thrust screw 29, threaded in a bracket 30 in the frame, and connected to this screw 29, is an arm 31, which is in turn connected by a link 32 with an arm 33 on an operating shaft 34 extending horizontally across the frame and having an arm 35 by which it is' operated to turn said screw to move the drum toward the gear to frictionally connect the same thereto. The drum is moved in the opposite direction to disconnect it from the gear by rotating the screw to relieve its pressure upon the drum, and engaging the end of the screw is an arm 36 on a side frame of the machine, and carrying at its inner end a yoke 38 seated in a groove 39 formed in a flange on the end of the drum, the arrangement being such that when the screw is moved outward to relieve the friction, the movement is transmitted to the drum to positively move the same to break the frictional engagement between the drum and gear. The drum 21 when coupled to the driven gear 16 is adapted to take up an outhaul rope or that part of a cableway serving to outhaul the logging line, and is disconnected from the said gear while the inhauling operation is taking place. A suitable shoe brake 21 is arranged in engagement with the outer cylindrical surface of the clutch element 24, pivoted to an arm 21*, on a rock shaft 21 mounted on the frame and having a lever arm 21, engaged by an arm 21 on an operating rock shaft 21 also mounted on the frame, and operable by a foot lever 21 1 Mounted on the shaft 17 in the frame space on the opposite side of the center memher from that containing the drum 21, is a gear 40 keyed to the shaft, and arranged in mesh with a pinion 41 keyed to a shaft 42 located directly beneath the shaft 17 and having its respective ends journaled in bearings 43 in the pillars 19 of the center member and side frame, theinner end of said shaft terminating at the center member. This pinion 41 in turn meshes with a large gear 44, keyed to a horizontally disposed shaft 45, journaled in bearings 46 in the forward part of the center and side frame members, and at a point thereon adjacent the base of the pillars 19. This gear 44 is provided with an annular friction element 46, in the form of "a wood annulus having an inclined outer face 47 Keyed to the shaft 45 in the frame space containing the pinions 40, 42 and gear 44, is a drum 48 having end flanges 49, the outer face of the one nearest the said gear 44 having a clutch ring 50 formed with an inner inclined face 51 to engage the inclined face 47 on the gear 44. This drum is movable longitudinally of its shaft by a suitable thrust mechanism 51 to place the said friction clutch elements in and out of engagement. This drum is adapted to have wound thereon the inhaul rope of a logging system, and operates when coupled to the driving gear 44 to take up said rope to inhaul a load. Journaled in the front part of the frame is a rock shaft 52 having an arm 53 to which is connected a brake shoe 54 which engages the outer face of the element'50 on the drum, said brake being operable to retard or control the rotation of the drum when disconnected from the gear 44. The end of the shaft 52 which projects outside the frame, as shown in Fig. 2, has a foot lever 52 by means of which the brake is operated. Mounted within the same frame space as hat containing the drum 21, and keyed to the shaft 45 is a friction element 55, and loosely mounted on said shaft in said space is a. loading drum 56 having an annular friction surface 57, to cooperate with said element 55, said drum being longitudinally movable of the shaft by means of thrust means 58 to placeit in engagement with said element 55 to drive said drum.
Journaled in the frame in longitudinal alinement with the shaft 52, is a second rock shaft 59 having an arm 60, connected by a link 61 with one arm 62. of a bell-crank lever mounted on a shaft 63,the opposite arm 64 which is connected to one end of a band brake 65, acting on the flange 57, the opposite endof said band being anchored on the frame as shown at 66. the shaft 59 has thereon a foot lever 67, which it will be seen is on the opposite side of the machine from the levers which control the operation of the drums 21 and 48, as is also the thrust means 58. The purpose of this arrangement is to permit independent operation of the loading drum by an operator other than the one controlling the inhaul and outhaul drums, while the log hauling operation is going on.
The throttle valve for the engine cylinders is shown at 68, the valve rod 69 being horizontally disposed and carried to a point adjacent the operating levers for the inhaul and outhaul where it is provided with a hand lever 70, thearra'ngement being such as to permit convenient operation of said valve by the machine operator conducting the log hauling without leaving his station.
The outer end of- The operation of the construction set forth is as follows, it first being understood that the inhaul rope 71 of the cableway is wound upon the drum 48 and the outhaul lead 72 of the cableway upon the drum 21: Presuming now that the inhaul line is drawn in so that the tongs or other log engaging means (not shown) are adjacent the machine, the operator disconnects the drum 48 from the gear 14:, and connects the drum 21 with the gear 16, and then operates the throttle valve to admit steam to the engine cylinders, which operate to revolve the power shaft 7 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1. The power shaft 7 being set in motion it serves through the pinion 15 and gear 16 to revolve the drum 21 to take up the outhaul line 72 which acts on the outhaul line 71 to outhaul the log engaging means to a point where the logs are to be connected to the inhaul line. During this operation the brake 54 is operable to retard and control the revolution of the inhaul drum to maintain the hauling line taut. lVhen the inhaul line is sufliciently outhauled, the operator disconnects the outhaul drum 21 from its driving gear 16 and ap plies the brake 21 to prevent overrunning of the drum, and couples the inhaul drum 4-8 by means of the friction clutch parts @6 3 50 to the driving gear 44. The inhaul drum then operates to take up the inhaul rope to draw in the load, the outhaul drum 21 running free, under control of its brake, to pay out the outhaul line. During the operation above stated, the loading drum may be operated to perform the loading of the logs by the loading line 7 3 wound on said drum 56, entirely without regard to the inhauling and outhauling of the logging system, the result being that both the hauling operation and the loading operation may be conveniently and effectively carried on by the same machine, run from the same source of power, but entirely independently of each other and by independent operators.
By the construction and arrangement shown and described it is seen that all of the drums for performing all of the logging operations are included within a single structure, and within. the supporting frame. It will also be seen that by the arrangement of gearing we are enabled to so drive all of the drums that the ropes wound on the latter all pass off tangential to the upper surface thereof.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a logging engine, in combination, a frame comprising side members and an intermediate member, a driving shaft and a drum shaft geared thereto jo-urnaled in the said side members and intermediate member, a drum on the drum shaft between one side member and the intermediate member, a counter shaft geared to said drum shaft and located on the opposite side of the intermediate member from the said drum, a second drum shaft geared to the counter shaft, and a drum on the second drum shaft on the opposite side of the intermediate member from the first named drum.
2. A logging engine comprising side and intermediate frame members, a power shaft journaled in said members and carrying a pinion, a drum shaft in advance of the power shaft and journaled in the side frame members, and having a gear fixed thereto meshing with said pinion, a rope drum on said shaft, said gear and drum having 00- operable clutch members, a pinion fixed to said drum shaft, a counter shaft arranged beneath the said drum shaft and having a pinion meshing with the second-named pinion, a drum shaft in advance of said first drum shaft and having a driving gear fixed thereto, a drum loosely mounted on said second drum shaft, said last-named driving gear and drum having coopera-ble clutch members.
