To 1 un /om it may (rum-c172 lloit known that l, 'lnonms S. l'iOMANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at llelnpstentl, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented new and usct'ul Improvements in Keyboard Mechanism t'or Linc-Composing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in line composing machines and more especially to those of the Well known linotype class, and the invention pertains to the keyboard mechanism whereby manipulation of the linger keys thereof controls the actuation of power-operated cam -y0kes which cam yoltes transmit corresponding movements to escapemcnt devices, the latter controlling the delivery of matrices from differ entmatrixcontaining channels of the magazine.
'lhe prinmryobject of the invention is to provide novel and improved bearings for the cam yokes, such bearings enabling any one '01 more of the yokes to be removed, together with its individual or respective bearing, from the machine for any purpose, stich tor example, as lubrication, cleaning or repairing', the removal of one 'or more of the cam yokes not affecting the remaining cam yokes.
To this end, the invention consists in certain in'iprovements, and combinations and arrangements of parts, all '18 will behereinafter more fully described, the novel fentures being pointed out particularly in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the accompanying drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of the keyboard mechanism of a machine constructed in accordance with the present invention, it being understood that only a few of the op-v erntive parts of the keyboard mechanism are shown; Fi 2 is a perspective view showing another method of holding the cam yoke hearings in operative position.
Similar parts are designated by the same reference characters in the several views.
The present invention is applicable genere-11y to any style of machine employing a keyboard of this class, and it is to be understood that the claims at, the end oi"? this specification are not limited'to a machine of any particular type, although the invention its respective hearing. in
tending-teeth or projections 13 is illustrated and will he described as sip plied to keyboard mechanism of the same type as that disclosed in my prior applicaon Serial No. 707,926 filed July 5, 1912. is the present instance 1 designates z i of the key levers of the keyboard, these y lovers being, usually pivoted. shown, nd provided at their forward ends with finger keys which are adapted to he manipulated in the usual way by the fingers of the operator. T he rear ends of the k 1 levers operatively connected to correspcnding tically movable key bars 2, the latter being suitably guided'in the frame of the and are lifted when the correspor keys are depressed. Ther 'h operate with corresponding trig latter being mounted to rock on the pivot pin st supported by the frame oi the ins; chine, each trigger having a snhst ntiaily horizontal arm which cooperates with the respective key her and vertical or np- Wardly projecting arm which controls the operation of the respective yoke. The com yokes 5 may of the usual or anyde sired construction, although the present in vention provides improved pivottl he therefor.- According' to the tion, an individual hezirir 6 each cam o each preferably with a slot T to its cor responding'end of the respe earn yoke and a pivot pin 8 is provided h tch forms a pivotal connectizn between each yoke the construct-ion shown, each hearing has a lower reduced portion forming asha-nlt'z l which may cylindrical so as to tit removehly in a bore formed in a stationary supporting bar 10, the bearings for the different yokes in the present instance being arranged in a longitudina'lrovv in the bar 10 and may be insorted and removed from the top thereof. The cam yokes carry cams 11 which. in the present instance, are pivoted to rotate in hollow chambers 12- in the yolies and these cams are arranged above a continuously revolving powernperated roller The cams are provided with pins or projections is and :2 bar 15 is fixed. to the sti i 'ra mework 16 and provides doivnvvs which the projections 14. on the respective cams normally rest, lhe cams being thcreby held out of Contact With the surface of the revolving roller 13.
The triggers 3 normally SBPPOI'I'J the cam yokes in such positions that too prcjccslons 14- on the cams will rest against the beetle or projections 1?, the cams at this time being out of contact with the revolving roller and Eunice the will be inactive. Beyrcssmn of any one of the fingor keys of the lzy"- board, however, will cause upward movemetal; of the corresponding key oar and'fl aji: leer will track the cormspondingcrigger Elmto a posifiion -where its upwardly extendling arm moves from beneath the correspond ing cam ego and into the hollow portion llzoreci', t lei-oily allowing such com yolio cc drop and dropping of time com yoke will carry llae' projection loci the respective corn downwardly and col; of contact will the respcciive :oooih or projection 17 end will cons-e chc respective com to Erosion top of the revolving roller. The rcvolvin Lnooil on of the roller will then cause ZG'l-fiilfifi of is com and tho com is so shaped tho-i when combed it elevate the cam yolrc. The upward movement of the com yoke under the action of its cam is imnsmited by suit ablc means to the cscapement which controls the delive. of corresponding matrices from the magazine, plan-gem 18 being shown in the present instance which operate vertically through guides 19 filled in the frame memos? 20, and i .1 31831 ends of these 131cm gors cooperate v.53; 1 vertically movable reeds 23, the r o ooraing in the usual or suitable 3.113011 the matrix-controlling eseapements. After each cam has actuated its com yoke to efiec'iz lo delivery of the selooted matrix from the magazine, such cam returns to a position where. its projcction lowest-s against the corresponding tooth or projection 1'3, the cam being; then out of contact with the revolving roller and the cam will rcsl upon its trigg ilce'latter being resl ored to normal osztion when ocessure upon the comes on log finger key llas been relieved by the operalcr.
Means is provided for retaining the bearlogs for the com yokec proper operative ocsition allhough enobli any one or more of these bearings to L Wsily quickly removed tog ether its com yoke and cam when such is do liable on necessary. In Fig. 1, cigar or keeper 22 is providod, it being pivotzllly supported in any suitable way, such, for example, as by tho pin or rod 23 carried lyv the framework 16, a stop is pro- L.' z .8 1 v vided' for suppo Wong into on 'tion indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l,
ings being thereby held in their normal operative positions. When it is desirable or neccssar to remove any one of the cam yokes, e keeper is swung out of its operafive position and, for example, into. the post the keeper then resting against the stop '24 and any one or more. of the bearings can be lifted or removed from the bar 10. Return of the keeper to the full-lineposition locks ell vthe bearings in position. Instead of using 2. be! or keeper such as that just dcscribed for retaining the bearings in place, other meansmay housed, such, for example as shown in Fig. 2,"'whe'rein' set-screws 25 coiiperatowith the stems or shanks of the corresponding bearings and thereby retain 52cm in the b52219.
Tho present invention provides simple and improved-moans whoreb' anyone or more. of the cam yokcs may eeasily and quickly removed and replaced and in c; Floyinig removable cam yoke bearings emaodying the present invention, it I is, unnecessazy to slot or otherwise cut away any portion of the pivot bearing in the cam yoke and hence such bearing is capable of withstanding wear'to the best advantage.-. v
