Specification-o Letterrslalteiit'. l. v i' "X, '19142.
Appncaaonmeaapruis,191s. seriainarciaas I To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK C. 'DoRMnNn residing at Detroit, in the county of ll/Vayne and State of Michigan, have `invented "cerf tain new and useful Improvements in Masi sage-Vibrators, of which the following .is a. specification,` reference being had-therein'to the accompanying drawings. l f l ff This invention relates to a massage-vibrator and to an arrangement thereof Where-A by any portion of the patient may be readan attendant-and whereby-,the nature of the vibration may be varied at .the will of the operator.
The invention consists in the. matiere, hereinafter set forth and particularly p0mt ed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a View, partially in elevation and partially in longitudinal section, of a vibrator that embodies features of the invention; Fig. 2 is a View of the upper end portion of the barrel with the cap removed; Fig. 3 isa view in detail of an eccentric pintle connection for a. Wabble shaft; Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the upper end po-rtion of the barrel with an attached massage head; and Fig. 5 is a View in detail showing a modification of the vibrating means.
As herein shown lin preferred form a cyl lindrical barrel 1 is mounted on a head 2 from which an axial holding handle 3/eX- tends. A cap 4 on the upper end of the barrel has a boss 5 With angularly disposed sockets, in any of which the stem G of a massage implement 7 may be secured by means of a thumb screw 8. rl`he implement 7 may, of course7 be of any preferred design for application to the body.
A weight 9 is eccentrically secured on a shaft 10 that is disposed transversely in the casing, A thrust collar 11 at one end of the shaft and an adjustable bushing 1Q at the other end provide for adjustment and for take up in case of Wear. A crank shaft 13 with handle 11, is adjustably secured on the outer end of the main drive shaft 38. The latter is operatively connected as through a gear 15, pinion 1G, countershaft 1T, intermediate gear 1S and follower pinion 1i) with the weight shaft 1() to drive thc latterat a relatively high speed in relation of America,'-
ily treated either by the patient himself or A pintle 9 8 on tothe movementofthe'handle 14. Any pre- .'ferred form of' drivin mechanism that produces the required ye ocity of movement of vthe Weight shaft 'may be used in place of the gears, pinons and intermediate shaft. Suitable end thrust bushings 2O are used to properly'journ'al the main and countershafts in.
Asleeve 22 in axial alinement with the shaft 10 is detachably secured, as by screwthreaded engagement With a boss 23 on the side of the casing; A cap 24 removably secured on the outer end thereof coperates with a race-Way 25 or annular bearing in the sleevel to retain a spherical bearing 26 intermediate the ends of a Wabble shaft 27. the inner end of the latter engages an eccentrically disposed socket 29 Iin the proximate end of the shaft 10. massage member 80 is removably secured on the outer lend of the vvabble shaft. In this construction the shaft 10 not only swings the Weight 9 but also operates the wabble shaft `when the latter is attached. In order that'the influence of the weight. 9 may be eliminated, the construction indicated lin Fig. 5 is used. In such instance a weight shaft 31 has a peripheral flange 32 against which a collar 33 of a pendulum Weight 31 may be forced by a thrust ring 35 so that the Weight may be locked to turn with the shaft 31. Preferably the collar 35 is shifted by a `hand screw 3G in screivthreaded engagement in an axial socket in the shaft 31, the inner reduced end portion thereof havf ing a peripheral groove that engages the in ner end portions of radial studs B7 in the .thrust collar. Thus the Weight may be allowed to hang free When the Wabble shaft is mounted on the casing in gear with the shaft 31.
The handle is comparatively heavy in comparison With the outer portion of the casing, so that, because the mass of the handle to that of the casing,
the vibrations occur mainly at a point remote from the handle which they do not effect.
In operation the rapid revolution of the unbalanced Weight on the weight shaft imniountcd on the barrel cap so that the inember produces the desired eifect when applied l to the part to be treated. As the angle of the massage member in relation to the barrel of the relation of.
parts vibrations to the massage member may be varied at will, the instrument is readily adaptable for use in any position or on any portion of the body.
Positive massaging may be obtained by use of the member on the end of the Wabble shaft, the movements of which are caused by the positive driving connections, and are not checked or deadencd in any Way by application of the instrument to the person of the. user. There is a rocking, kneading or massaging movement produced by the Wabble shaft that is entirely distinct from that caused by the Weight vibrations. Both the massaging and the vibrating movements may be snnultaneously applied to a subject by proper disposition of the several members.
The structure is compact, not liable to become disarranged through use or Wear, is readily inspected and adJusted and is easily sterilized and cleansed.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
What I claim is In an appliance for imparting meohan1 cal vibrations, a hollow closed casing, a manually driven shaft revolubly supported transversely of the outer end thereof, a weight member loosely suspended on the shaft, means operable from the loutside of the casing .for securing the member to the shaft to revolve out of balance, a sleeve connected to the outer side of said casing and disposed at right angles thereto, a shaft arranged longitudinally of said sleeve and movably held at the outer end of said sleeve, said shaft having the linner end there of loosely mounted in said driven shaft at a point eccentric to the longitudinal axis thereof, and a massage member detaehably mounted upon the outer end of the last mentioned shaft.
In testimon whereof I affix my signature in presence o two Witnesses.
