To all whom it may concern.'
lle it known that l, PrnLrP il, MITTEN, a citi/:en of 1the -United States residing at Philadelphia. in Jdie county olf Philadelphia and State of' Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Deck Vehicles, of which the following; is a specilication, reference being had .therein to the accompanying; drawing.
This invention relates to double deck vehicles and more. particularly ifo a inobor-v driven hns of this type.
The invention has tivo main obj Une objectis lo. provide sncli a vehicle ha ving a n'iaiiinlnn sealing' capacity and. other object is lo prov'l snol a vehicle which can lie controlled entirely single o licei', lihai" is, the oillioial who acts chan'l 'leur will also collectv lie, fares and control. the entrance and exil; of fiasseng'ers 'to and from the hns.
lt is also an object of 'che invention to provide a vehicle of this kind in which che lower deck may he entirely inelosed, by providing` doors for llie entrance and exil', passageways, which are onder the control. of the oilicer in charge, and by providingr a door to close the stairway leading to the upper deck.
It is a further object of the invention io provide the car with lhe entrance and exit passageways both at the frontl end; to ar range i'zhe sairvmy leading lo the upper deck at the rear end ci' the lons and at one side of the center thereof. thus leavinga large anionnto space al'. rear ol.E both, the upper and lower decl which. is available for seats. u v
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation, partly broken away, .of a bus embodying my invention; Fig, il is a iop, plan View of the upper deck; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the hns showing the lower deck in plan..
ln these. drawings l have illustrated my invention as applied to a Amotor driven bus, Jdie supporting fra-ine of 'which is shown at l and .may loe of any suitable character and the propulsion of which may he aecomplished in any suitable manner. Mountednponthe frame 1 is the body portion of the bus which comprises a lower deck 2 and an opper deck 3. in the pi lower deck is closed and vhe upper deck 's entirely open, but it will obvious that this i. fnt instanee 4is not an essential part of the invention and ithat the decks may he either open or closed, as may loe desired. In the consruc'tion here shown lie lower deck provided at if-sor ward end with looth an entrance and an exit passageway, entranze passageway' being); arranged adjacenty to lhe sta-fion oli' the chauffeur or o'lher oilicial in charge of the motive @owen A passageway leads from the entrance and enit passages rearward lo a stairway leading lo the upper denh', this stairway heine` here shown as a s'v iral Way and heink@` arranged at one side of the center ,of the bus, thus leavinga large por Lion of the rear Wall oiE lilievehicle and *chat sido oi llie 'rehi :e opposiie the stairway available scallin purposes. Likewise, y'lie ay open-s into 'die doper decl( ai', one side of the l: a consiee "ile portion of lhe rear end and side wall of this declr 'if liable 'for seats.
The parlicular consh'ncion and arrangement oi' the several parts of the vehicle may be varied as circumstances vmay demand, lont `for the purpose of illustration I have here shown the lovrcr deck of the vehicle asprovided at its *forward end and on one sideol the center line lhereo'f Wir-h. an entrance passageway L and an exit passageway 5, the son passageways being divided hy a barrier' ci' rail'G extending from a point adjacent to the side of the vehicle lao a point near the cenlzer of the body portion thereof. Arranged adjacent to ehe ent-rance passageway and in the' present instance at 'that side of the Vehicle opposite the enirance and enit passagevvays is a station or seat 7 for the official in charge and arranged adjacent to this seat'iswlio steering and controlling mechanism 4fornire vehicle, as shown at- "ov, VFurther, if desired, fare box@ may he mounted ad'j'acenlc'to the dlicerisgshation and to the entrance passageway. in this manner the oiicei in charge is ,erevlaled to perform the duties both of the chaudeur or driver for Jche vehicle and of the conductor or fare collector. Further, Jdie enlliereoit7 and thus leaves lill trance. Iand exit passagewaysare provided los ing handlesv 12 arranged: adjacent te .the
The 'conneeions between the operating dethe corresponding step may be simultaneously operated to open orclose its passageway independently of or in unison with lthe other door and its step. The particular arrangements of the doors and of thev door and step operating devices are not a part of this invention but are fully shown and described and the novel features thereof claimed in certain applications tiled by Ralph rl?. Senter and assigned to the assignees of the present invention, to wit, ap-
plicaton Ser. No. 638,635, tiled July 5th,
1911, and divisional applications, Ser. Nos. 681,559: and 681,545, tiled AprillYth, 1912. lithin the body of the vehicle and adjacent to the ends of the entrance and exit passageways the vehicle is provided with lengthwise seats 13 and 14, thus affording a broad entrance into4 the body portionof the vehicle and avoiding any congestion 'when large numbers of passengers are entering or leaving the vehicle at the -same time. in the central portion of the vehicle the seats extend crosswise, indicated at 15, and are spaced apart in the usual manner to form a passageway 16 which leads from the entrance and exit passageways 'to the stairway at the rear ct the vehicle. The rear portion of the lower deck of the vehicle is here shown as entirely closed, although this is 'not essential to an embodiment of the invention. The crosswise seats terminate at some distance from the rear end wall of the vehicle and a stairway 17, which is here shown asI spiral =in form, is arranged in the extreme rear part of the vehicle at one side of the longitudinal center thereof, thus cc- `cupying a minimum amount of space and enabling a considerable portion ot' the rear wall and that portion of the side wall of the vehicle opposite the stairway to be utilized fora seat 18. The arrangemcntof this seat is such that while it will accommodate several passengers it will not, when occupied, obstruct the free passage'ot passengers to 4and Jfrom thc stairway. A similar arrangement exists at the rear end of the upper deck of the vehicle except that the portion of the seat, 19, which extends along the rear wall thereof is somewhat shorter than the correspondingr portion of the seat 18, this being necessary in order to allow the passengers to pass from the step of the stairway 17 onto the floor of the upper deck. That portion'ofthe upper deelt forward of the stairway is provided with crosswise seats 20 of the v-usual construction and arrangement. As here shown the upner. deck is inelosed by al railing 21, but lobvimsly any suitable inclosure may be provided. l
It is desirable that' means should be pro- Licence lOand in order toclose the rear end l have inclosed the stairway by means of a wall 22 and have arranged the door 28 at the lower' end thereof to entirely close the same. This door is preferably a sliding door and is arranged to slide' into a pocket 2st arranged beneath the top of the stairway.
It will be apparent fromthe drawings and the foregoing description that the vehicle has a very large 'seating capacity and will in. fact seat a greater number of passengers than any other similar vehicle ofthe same proportions. Further it will be apparent that a single oliicial has control of the entire vehicle, yboth the motive power and the collection of fares. Moreover, it
-will heA apparent that' the arrangement is sueltas to provide a minimum of interference in the entrance and exit of passengers and that the lower deck can be entirely inclosed if it should be desirable, as in rough weather. A
lVhile l have shown and described the invention embodied in a motor driven bus it will be obvious that the invention is not limited to this class of vehicles but is capable of a broad application. Further, while 1 have shown and desc ibed one embodiment pf the invention it will be understood that this has been chosen :for the pur-- pose of illustration only and that I do not desire to be limited to the details oi' construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
Having thus 'fully described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- 1.
