Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 29, 19121 Patented July '1, 1914.
Serial No. 706,609.
To all 'ic/wm 'it may concern.:
lie it known that. l. Lewis C. li\vi.iis,.a citizen ot the lnitcd 'itates, residing in ltaetony iii the county ot' Northampton and tritate ot Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lniproveniente in Valves for Compressors. ot which the followingr is a. specification.
This invention relates to valves for coinpressors and more i'iai'ticularly to inlet valves of the plate type. In valves of this type as heretofore used considerable dillically haa been encountered in providing' a `suitable means `tor :securing the valve plate and its scat in position in the aperture in the cylinder provided for it and also in asseinhline' the parts in their proper positions on account ot' the restricted space in which it is ncccesary to work. n
The object ol` the present invention is to provide a` valve plate and seat therefor toi gelher with a holding meaneot' such construction that the Valve and the valve, seat. will he lirinly and securely held in Vposition and the various parts can be simply and easily assembled and secured in position even iu compressors ol small size.
A practical einlfiodiinent oi thc inyeiitulin ia shown in the acci'iinpanying drawings` in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through the valve and a portion oi the cylinder, Fig. '2 is a horizontal .section on the line 2MB of Fig. Yl and hin'. IS is a Section similar to I "ign l showing a moditied Ytorin ofconstruction.
rl`hc tigzjurcs show a-cylinder 1 to which is secured a cylinder head 2 and in which ro; ciprocatcs the pieton it. ln the extreme end of the c ilinder and partly overlapping the cyliinlerihead 2 is an inlet opening Ll which connects the cylinder with the inlet chamber 5. rl"he openingr 4l is provided with a shoulder against which abuis the inlet valve of the compressor. This valve comprises a valve seat made up o'll a lower supporting grid 7 perforated with diseoiitinuous concentric annular ports 8 and an upper grid 9 of similar construction slightly separated therefrom. The two parte 7 and 9 are secured together by ay screw holt 10. Between the two parts 7 and t) is an apertnred valve plate l1 its: solid portion covering the ports 8. The valve plate 11 can have a slight movement away from the grid 7 and annular orts 9 out is normally held Isicalcd by a plurality of springs 12 only one ofwhieh. is
shown in the figures. The periphei'y of the is secured by bolts .20 to the outer wall of the inlet chamber 5.
In assembling,r the parts of the valve and its hoh'ling means, the valve proper, comprising the `grids 7 and t) and the valve plate 11, is inserted throughthe hole in the outer casing of the cylinder covered by the plate 1S) and is placed in proper position against the shoulder (i and teinpoi'ai'ily held by means of the frictional engagement of the split ring 14 with the wall of the inlet opening. The plate 19 is then secured in posilion together with the valve supporting means comprising the supporting ring 15 and its threaded supporting post 18.
.\t`ter the plate 1S) is secured in position hy bolts 20, the threaded post'18 is turned to l'orce the ring 15 against the grid 7 thus holdingr the valve scat securely in position. lhe valve supportingr rinpr and cup are prevented from turningr by means of a dowel 2l while a lock init 22 holds the threaded post 18 in its final position.
ln Fig. a slightly dill'crent form 0f construction is shown, the valve supporting ring! l5 heineT t'ormcd integral with a Cup 23 provided with perforatioiis 2 l, the lower end of the cup Q3 beinrglr extended into a supportine post Q3 which is threaded externally and turns in a threaded aperture in the plate 19 to `torce the ring 15 upwardly to hold the valve in position.
An important feature of the present invention is the fact that the valve seat supporting ring,r 15 is held in place by a coinparatively small supportingr post situated centrally of the ring. With this construction it' the various parts do not fit with the exact accuracy necessary to bring the valve seat squarely against the shoulder 6 at all points and the ring 15 likewise squarely against the valve scat at all points, as might often occur on account of the number of @if me and a slight variation in the distance of the shoulder `will not prevent a einig fit. Although my invention is here described in connection with a compressor inlet valve it would also be applicable to compressor discharge valve or to any other case Where such a valve would he advantageous.
It isgto loe understood that the present showing and description. discloses only certain specified modii'ications of my invention 'andother forms and n'iodiications are includedin the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the claims.`
1What I claim is: Y y l. lin a compressor, a cylinder having an ilileliiperture, a Valve comprising valve plate and a valve seat therefor fitting` seid aperture, means for temporarily retaining said valve in said aperture and means for positively holding valve in said aperture,
2. in ay compressory a cylinderhaving an inlet aperture, a valve coniprisiiet)r a valve plate and a valve seat therefor litting said aperture, means for temporarily retaining said valve in said aperture and means for positivelyT holding said valve in said aperture comprising a retainingu ring, and means to force said ring` against said valve.
3. ln a compressor, a. cylinder havig an inlet aperture, a valve comprising a valve plate and a'valre seat therefor tting said, aperture, means for temporarily retaining` said valve irl said aperture and means for positively holding said valve insaid aperture.comprising a retaining z ing and a threaded post mounted centrally thereof for forcing said ring against said Valve.
:in a conil'iressor, a, cylinder havingT an inlet aperture, a Valve comprising a valve plate and a valve seat therefor fitting said aperture, and split spring); ring to temporarilj,Y retain said valve in said aperture.
