t" AMP-PACK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 319-1 4 i Application filed April 19, 1913. 3 3
Serial No. 762,365.
To all whom it'may concern -Be it known that I, \Vaannx l-l. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of I'nterlaken, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Camp-Packs, of which the following is a specification accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to camp packs, but more particularly to a blanket or covering which may be used as a pack-sack, and may be combined with a sleeping mattress to form a closed sleeping envelop over the human form.
The objectsof the invention are to improve upon the blanket ordinarily used, enable the blanket to be conveniently usedas a pack-sack which is light; in weight, and also enable the blanket to be used as one part of a sleeping-bag.
' The best form of the invention known to me is shown in the accompanying drawings,
in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the blanket;
Fig. 2 is a view of the blanket madeup into av pack-sack; and Fig. 3 is a side view pf the combined mattress and sleeping-bag.
Referring to the drawings, the blanket A may.be of convenient size and shape as shown in'Fig. 1 about-four feet long more or less and about three feetwide, more or less. This blanket may be used to wrap lengthwise about the middle portion of the body, ifdesired, in those instances in which the upper part of thebody and the legs and feet are each protected as by fur, woolen or other coverings. The blanket is preferably made 'of waterproof material,.as canvas B, on one side, lined with warm material C as 'mackinaw, caribou hide, or combinations of materials for warmth; The shoulder straps D are provided on the outside, and rings or fastenings E at one end to be used when the sack is formed. The longer edges of the blanket are preferably provided with the I flaps or margins F for a purpose hereinafter to appear and longitudinal rows of holes 01' other fastening devices G are shown for lacing up the sides in the form of a bag, as shown 'in Fig. 2, as by means of the thongs H. Holes or other fastening devices J are provided along one end for closing up or lacing across the foot of the sleeping bag when used with a mattress. In rorming the pack-sack the ends of the blanket are folded over, as shown in Fig. 2 and the sides are laced together, one end K forms the flap, and if desired, straps L may be provided to hold the flap closed, although these are not necessary. When packed the pack-sack may be swung over the shoulders as by means of the straps D.
A bag is ordinarily carried in the sack to form a sleeping mattress and when this-bag O isfilled with browse, moss, leaves, etc, a suitable mattress is formed. The blanket when opened out may be fastened along its longitudinal sides, as by means of the holes "G and J to hooks or fastening devices P on the mattress, leaving one end of the covering open, so that aperson may lie between the blanket and the mattress.
One of the great advantages of my invention resides in the fact that while ordinarily a blanket is a bulky burden, my blanket is light and combines several uses. By means of my invention the ack itself becomes the blanket. and the smal blanket becomes the pack. The pack-sack is of sutlicient size to take a forester tent which goes in the bottom of it and which maybe refolded into a small parcel. Above the tent may be stowed sweater, browse bag, mosquito cloth, etc.-
Then may be stowed provisions and other general dnfile, camera, etc.- This completes the pack, which is small and compact and the mess-kit is strapped to the top. One of the bags may'be used as a pillow stalled with leaves or moss. The blanket inay be used. by putting on sweater and kamiks or for socks made out of the far of the Arctic hare and wrapping the sleeping cloth or blanket about the middle portion of the body, but the sleeping bag may be formed in combination with the mattress.
I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent of the United States the following:
The combination with a sleeping mattress, of a separate and independent com- .posite covering which may be formed into a pack sack and comprising a piece of material having fastening devices along its edges, whereby the said covering may be folded into the form of a sack. having its In testimony whereof I have signed this edges seoured'togethenaid covering being specification in the presence of two subadapted to be secured to the sleeping inatscribing Witnesses. 1 tress to form a closed sleeping envelopover WARREN HASTINGS MILLER. the-human form, and being provided with Witnesses: means attached directly thereto for carry- M.
