application filed December 30, 1912.
Patented June 30, 1914. Serial No. 739,331.
vTo all 'whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, ltomen'r O. Hummm), a citizen of the United States, resident ot' Farmingdale, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, beve made a cert-am new and use'tul invention in Egg 'Mailing Gases; and I decla re the following to be a full, clear1 and exact description ot th same, sueh as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of ret'el ence marked thereon, which `form a part of this specification.
Figurei a pers'i'iective view of the invention. Fig. 2 a transverse vertical seetion of the same. Fig. 3 .is a detail persiiec tive view of the outer part ot the box. Fig. 4l is a similar view oi the inner part of the box. Fig. 5 is a similar view ot' the intermediate part ott the box.
The invention has relation to egg mailing cases of paper board, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations ot' parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral l designates an open-end slidable cover or outer member; 2 an open-top and open-bottom rectangular frame or intermediate member, and 3 an inner member 'formed of a flat piece of paper board having a bot-tom fl, upturned plane ends 5, and inturned rectangular' top flaps G meeting at their inner ends, said inner member being located preferably within the frameQ, so that 'the upturned ends 5 will be held up by `the ends of said frame when the members 2 and 3 are withdrawn or slid end- Wise f om the cover, the bottom 4 in the withdrawn position of the members closing the frame 2 at the bottom, and the upturned ends and top flaps serving to keep the bottom in place The construction described will also provide two plies or thicknesses of paper board upon each side of the box.
Fitting within the rectangular frame and inner member are a plurality of comparatively short .u right tubes or cylinders 7 also of paper oard, and designed each to contain one egg, said tubes extendin hat their ends `adjacent to the top aps an bottom of the inner member, and the outer of the tubes extending at their sides adjacent to the sides o'l the rectangulaiframe and the upturned ends of the inner member.' Each tube has at each end disk cover 8, fitting within the tube, a cushion t) ot some suitable material such as sheet cotton wool, ot larffer dimensions or diameter than the tube being first placed over the end of the tube and the disk cover pressed in place to compress the marginal portion ol the cushion within the tube end between the odg)l of the disk and the side walls of the tube, the marginal portion of the cushion having projection outward at 10, beyond the end of the tube, lat orally outward at 11, over and under the ends of the tube between said ends and the bottom 4 or the to flaps 6, and inward at 1 2, between the adjacent tubes and between the outer of the tubes and the sides of the frame 2, and the u ptu rned ends of the member 3.
lt is preferred to make each member of the box of a. single flat sheet of paper board, the two outer members or parts being provided with laps 13 and 14, glued to the bodies thereof, and the. upright tubes having each a lap joint, glued together.
What I claim is z- A paperboard box, comprising an opentop and open-bottom conti1n1ous-wall rectangular intermediate frame, an inner part having a bottom, upturned end Walls and inturned top flaps, said bottom and said flaps closing said frame at top and bottom and the end walls of said frame being located without and in bracing engagement with and npholdrr said upturned ends of the inner part to orm a container, and an open-` end rectangular continuouswal1 cover part having teleseoping engagement with said container, 4whereby when the container; is partially withdrawn from said cover part one top flap may be turned back for access to thecontents, the container being held in form.
In testixnon whereof I affix my signature, in presence' o two witnesses.
