To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Ronnn'r S. IIAUN, citizen of the United States, residing at Ames, in the county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use'l'ul Improvements in Stanchion-Releases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cattle stanchions, and has particular reference to such improvements whereby all the cattle may be simultaneously released from the stanchion at one operation oi the device.
A further object of the invention contemplates the provision of specially devised trip mechanism `arranged `adjacent each stanchion; the simultaneous operation of the said mechanism adapted to automatically unlock the stanchion arms .t'or quickly releasing the cattle from the several stalls in connection with which the invention is employed.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means are 'illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the aecompanying drawings, described in the following speeiiication and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
In describing my invention in detail ref erence will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l anelevation of a device constructed inv accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 a section on line 2-2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of one of the clamps; Fig. 4t is a detail perspective view of the fastening means; and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the trigger;`
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form ot' my invention the numeral 1 designates a suitable feed trough through which suitable stanchion posts 2 extend, the latter having partitions 8 secured thereto as at 4 for the purpose oit creating any number oit' stalls desired. The upper extremities of the several posts S2 are connected to a longitudinally extending bar or beam 5 by means of any suitable connection such as is shown` at 6. Disposed about midway between the uprights 5 through the medium of a band 7,` I provide a stanchion S, the same comprising a stationary arm 9 and a plvoted arm 110, the pivot point 11 being at the base ot the said two arms D and 10. Any suitable means such as a chain 1Q may be employed for the purpose oi? sus pending the stanchion from one side of the baud 7,`while a similar chain 13 may be securedin any suitable manner to the trough l for rigidly supporting the stanchirm in the desired position. Oppositely disposed cars 1li are formed integrally with the stationary arm- 9 of the stanchion near the top thereof for the purpose of pivotally mounting a trigger l5, the latter having an open- :ing 16 formed therein through which alpin 17 projecting upwardly from the lace o'l the arm 10 extends. In 'fastening the pivoted arm l() o'l. the stanchion to the `stationary arm 9 ilor the purpose ot effecting a` suitable yoke or stanchion, a slot 18 is formed adjacent the ears 14; and within the stationary arm 9, the pin 17`litting into the said slot where it is securely held by the trigger 15, the opening 16 of the trigger fitting over the said pin and retaining the latter iu proper place within the slot 1S thereby effecting a secure connection between the said two arms 9 and l0.
Having described the manner in which the stanchions 8 are fastened, the detail description of the trip or operating mechanism will now be described. A .hand lever 19 is pivotally secured as at Q() to a suitable clamp 2l arranged upon the end post 2 of the device, the said lever 10 being pivotally secured as at 22 to alconnecting link 23 in turn pivotally secured as at Qi to a longitudinally extending rod or bar 25, the said bar extending parallel with the cross bar 5 otthe stanchion trame. `Arranged adjacent the band 7.0i? the cross bal` 5, I provide a suitable clamp 26 having an extension 27 formed integrally therewith and de )ending Yfrom one side thereof" as is clearly shown in Fig. 3 oi. the drawings. Pivotally secured to the said extensioniQT as at 2S is a bell crank lever 2i), oneextremity et which is pivotally seeuredas at 30 to the rod 25 while the other extremity is connected to the trigger 15 through the medium of a chain b1, the point of connection 3l being directly over the hole or opening 1G of the trigger. The `construction above recited is duplicated lfor each stanchion, the several bell rcrank levers being connected to the bar 25 to effect simultaneous operation thereof by the manipulation of the lever 19.
ln operation, the pivoted arm of the stanchion is unfastened, whereupon the stanchion is fitted over the neck of the cat tle to be confined within the stalls, in which event the said pivoted arm 10 is again fastened by means of the trigger 15. Should a quick release of the confined cattle be desired, the operation of the lever 19 will produce the desired result. By operating the said lever, the bar 25 is laterally moved for simultaneously operating the several bell crank levers 29, which in tnrn raise the triggers until the pins 17 of the pivoted stanchion arms 10 are withdrawn from the openings 1G of the triggers, whereupon the said pivoted arms 10 are free to swing outwai-diy from their pivot points 11 thereby efectually releasing the several cattle conlined within the several stalls. lt will'be seen from the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that by eccentrically pivoting the trigger 15 the weighted or larger end of the said trigger will normally fall, and that by providing the said weighted end with the opening 16, the said trigger is normally held with the pin 17 in engagement with the opening 16. By reversing the clamp 2G, the extension 27' will depend from the opposite side of the cross bar 5, thus permitting` the use or operation of the device from either side of the said bar.
ln reduction to practice, l have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most eilicient and practical, yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, l desire touemphasize the fact that various minor changes in detailsof construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing Vent of the other, of a support from which the said stancbions are suspended, an adjustable band arranged to embrace said sup" port adjacent cach stanchion, an operating lever pivoted to each band, the said levers being pivotally connected, one to each of the said latch mechanisms, and anl operating rod to which each lever is connected for actuating the said latch means to simultaneously release said stanchions, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. ln combination with a plurality of stanchions comprising a stationary and a pivotcd stanchion arm having latch means carried thereby to normally maintain said arm incapable of movement one independent of the other, of a support bar from which the said stanchions are, suspended, an adjustable band arranged adjacent each stanchien, the said band being disposed to embrace the said bar, a bell crank lever pivoted to each band, one end of each lever being connected to the latch means of the respective stanchions, an operating rod to which the opposite end of each lever is pivotally connected, a bracket carried by the said support bar, and an operating lever pivotally connected to the said bracket and 'to the said operating rod for actuating` the latter to sin'niltaneensiy release the said stancbions, as and for the purpose set forth.
