UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN H. FLEMING AND THOMAS FLEMING, OF CURTISVILLE. PENNSYLVANIA; SAID THOMAS FLEMING ASSIGNOR TO SAID JONATHAN H. FLEMING.
FIRE-EXTINGUISHING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J line 30, 1914.
Application filed February 21, 1911. Serial No. 609,925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JONATHAN H. FLEM- ING and THOMAS FLEMING, citizens of the United States, residing at Gurtisville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Extinguishing Devices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fire extinguishing apparatus and comprises essentially a series of spraying members held by flexible connection with water pipes and so constructed that, when the sprayers are released, the water may be distributed in all directions.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
We have illustrated our invention in the accompanying drawing in which we have shown a perspective view of parts of two rooms with two of our improved spraying devices, one adjusted within an opening in the wall and the other extended for operation.
Reference now being bad to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates areoess formed in the side wall B of a room and D is a water pipe projecting through the bottom of the recess and having a flexible pipe E connected thereto. A sphericallyshaped sprinkler head or nozzle F is fitted to said flexible pipe and is provided with perforations whereby water may be allowed to A valve H controls the supply of water being fed to the nozzle. Fitted to the water pipe immediately below its point of connection with the flexible pipe is a clamping member K to which a rod N is pivoted, having at its other end a ring 0 passing about the flexible pipe and serving to hold the same in an upright position when not in use. When the nozzle is in use, the rod N, which serves as a brace, supports the nozzle in the position shown in the lower part of the drawing.
In operation, when the doors to the receptacle in which the apparatus is mounted are opened, the nozzle will swing from the position shown in solid lines in the drawing to that shown in dotted lines, the outer so movement of the nozzle being limited and held by the rod N in the position shown, in which position the inclined ring at the end of the rod will be held against the nozzle, after which water may be turned on through the medium of the valve.
While we have shown valve mechanism for controlling the water passing through the pipe, it is obvious that the nozzles may be arranged in different ways and connected by any suitable mechanism not shown, whereby the water may be allowed to discharge automatically.
What we claim to be new is A fire extinguishing device consisting of a water supply main, a flexible pipe con nected to one end thereof and having a spray bulb communicating therewith, a clamping member fastened about said main and a pin carried by projecting portions of said clamping member, a rod pivotally connected at one end to said pin and guided in its swinging movements by parallel portions of the clamping member within which it is mounted, the opposite end of said rod having an eye positioned at an angle to the length of the rod and through which said flexible pipe passes, said eye adapted to bear against the spray bulb and hold the latter in a position substantially at right angles to its upright position, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
JONATHAN H. FLEMING. THOMAS FLEMING.
