To all whom it may concern Be it'known that I, CHARLES H. FARNs- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Briceland, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Set- Trigger Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
In small firearms of the nature embodying a set trigger many movements are usually required for operating the set trig ger so that the gun may be fired by a coinpa-ratively light pressure of the finger-without disturbing the accuracy of aim when the gun is pointed at a mark.
The present invention provides a firearm which admits of the trigger being automatically set by means of the hammerwhen cooking the gun. p

Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side view of the lock mechanism of a firearm embodying the invention, parts being broken away and the difierent elements being in the posi tion which they occupy when the hammer is thrown forward. Fig. 2 is a view of the parts illustrated in Fig. 1, showing the relation of the elements when the hammer is at full cock. Fig. 3 is a side view of the lock mechanism removed from the stock, the same being reversed and partly in section, the hammer being thrown forward. Fig. 4 is a view of the parts shown in Fig. 3, the hammer being drawn backward to half cock. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the hammer drawn backward beyond a full cock position so as to automatically set the trigger. Fig. 6 is a cross section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.

The sear spring 9 engages a toe of the sear.
The 'main trigger :10 is mounted upon the pinfiand has a finger 11 and a lug'12. A'
spring 12 is adapted to engage the finger '11 to exerta downward pressure thereon to throw the trigger 1O forwardly and the lug l2 gearwardly. The set trigger 14: has a head 15 which is adapted to engage a shoulder near the forward end of the sear 7. The head 15 is mounted upon a pin 16 and has a slot 17 which receives a pin 18 extending inwardly from a side of the frame 3, thereby limiting the movements of the set trigger. A lug 19 projecting laterally from the rear portion of the head 15 is adapted to engage under the lug 12 of the trigger 10 when the gun is set to be fired by pressure upon the trigger 10. The rear portion of the head 15 is adapted to be engaged by a pin 20 carried by the hammer 1 so as to depress the rear portion of the head 15 and set the trigger 14: upon drawing the hammer 4: backwardly after being brought to full cock. A spring 21 is adapted to engage the rear portion of the head 15 and exert an upward pressure thereon to hold the lug 19 clear of the space under the lug 12, thereby preventing a setting of the trigger 14: except by a rearward movement of the hammer after the same has been brought to full cock.
When the hammer is thrown forward so as to fire the gun the parts occupy the relative positions shown in Figs. land 3 and when the hammer is drawn backward into full cook the parts occupy the relative positions indicated in Fig. 2. To set the trigger 1 1 the hammer is pressed rearwardly after being brought to full cock, as indicated in Fig. 5, thereby bringing the lug 19 in position below the lug 12 which engages thereover and permits the trigger '10 to moreforwardly so that a light pressure upon the trigger 10 will fire the gun. A fly 22 is pivoted to a side of the butt of the hammer and is adapted to cover the half cock notch to prevent the sear catching thereon when the hammer is released by pressure upon the trigger after said hammer has been brought to a position of full cock. It is observed that the trigger may be set automatically by means of the hammer when the same is drawn backward into firing position. WVhen it is not required to set the trigger the hammer is drawn backwardly to full cock only, thereby preventing premature fir-- ing of ,the gun by accidental pressure upon object.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily ap-' parent to those skilled in the art to which described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to, be the best embodiment Corie! of this patent may be obtained for five cents' each, by addressing the Washington, D. Having thus-desoribed the invention What is claimed as new, is
a longitudinal lug for cooperation with the lug of the main trigger, and means carried by the hammer for engagement with the head of the main trigger to depress the same against the action of the said resilient means upon moving the hammer backwardly from its'full cocked position to enable the main trigger lug to engage beneath the lug of the set trigger.
