SECURING DEVICE. 4
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented one So, 1914.
Application filed January 2, 1913. Serial No. 739,683.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARY J. CorrMAN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Canton, county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Securing Devices, of which the following is u specification.
My invention relates to improvements in. securing device adapted to temporarily secure adjacent edges of a cut, such as commonly made in fowls designed to be filled with dressing and roasted, but it will be understood that the invention can be used to secure various kinds of roasts.
The objects of my invention are, first, to provide simple means whereby the fowl or roast will. not become disconnected during the process oi roasting and second, to pro vide for the retention of the securing device during the process or 'roostin These objects, together with other objects, readily apoarent to those skilled in the art, l1 attain by the construction illustrated in the occompanying draw ngs, although my invention may be embodied in a variety of other 1nechanical forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way or" example.
In the accompanying draiving l igure l i" :1 view showing a number of securin, devices properly connected to a fowl. Y lg. 2 is a detached perspective view oi one of the securing devices. Fig. '3 is -a section showing portion of a fowl or roast and illustrat ing the securing device properly applied. Fig. l is a sectional view showing one-of the retaining tangs or members properly 601 nected and the other tang ormember in post-- tion to be connected to secure the retaining device in proper position. 7 Similar numerals of reierenco'indicote corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
in the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the body or plate portion which is formed of suiiicientlength to properly bridge the cut or opening and at the same time allow the tongs 2 L0 be set a suthcient distance from the cut or opening to prevent them from displacement by reason of any strain that may be brought upon themby .rcnson of the expansion or contraction or changed conditions of the flesh during the 7 time the. roasting process is going forward.
The tongs 2 are preferably formed in pairs and are pivotally connected to the plate or body 1 so that the some can be turned in proper position to be securely seated in the flesh of the fowl or roast. The tengs 2 are so arranged that the opposite pairs will be inclined inward as best illustrated in Fig. 2, thereby preventing the displacement of said tangs should any strain be brought upon the same by the tendency of the joined "portions of the fowl or roast to separate or part during the time of roasting.
The tangs 2 are spaced apart a sutficient distance to allow the ends of the plate 1 to lie between the pairs of tongs. By forming the tongs 2 in pairsund pivotnlly connecting the same to the plate 1, there can be no lateral movement or said tongs either when released or in position to secure the roast by which arrangement the tongs are always in proper position with reference to the'plate l-to be properly inserted in the flesh and after they are inserted there is no liability of their becoming accidentally dis laced, owing to the fact that the plate 1 is old in close contact with the outer surface of the flesh at its four corners. a
.The tongs 2 are bent at an angle to the members 3, to which members the plate 11s attached, the tangs 2 being spaced from the ends of the plate 1. v I
For the purpose or properly connecting the device to a fowl or a roast the outermost portions ofthetangs are formed straight throughoiit their entire length whereby the tongs proper can be connected or inserted into the flesh of the fowl or roast.
Having fully described my'invcntion what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i In a securing device for the purpose specified the combination or an elongated plate, tangs pivoted to the opposite ends of said elongated plate, said tongs consisting of in tegral members, the outermost portions of the tongs located at an angle to the portions pivoted to the elongated plate, said outermost portions formed straight throughout their entire length, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I'
