Foldable Tables, of which the following is.
a specica-tion.
My invention relates to folding tables and has for its object the production of a table of this character adapted to be readily and easily folded or unfolded, one in which the legs will be rigidly held in either folded or unfolded positions, and one which will be durable and economical in construction, and
Other objects will appeal' hereinafter. The invention` consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing4 forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a bottom plan view of a table embodying my invention, the table being shown in folded condition, Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail section taken on line :z2-:c of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 2, the` leg here shown being illustrated in unfolded position instead of in folded 'position as inFig. 2, Fig. 4 is a perspective View of the upper end portion of one of the legs of the table detached, Fig.l5 is a perspective view of one of the socket members of the table detached, and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of one of the keyswhich cooperate with the socket members to releasably lock the table legs in folded or unfolded position.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a table top 1 rectangular in form. Provided at the under side of the table top 1 are elongated strips 2 arranged in pairs and extending parallel with the peripheral edges of the top l to form elongated channels 3. .Cleats 4 are also arranged at the under. side of the table top to cooperate with the strips 2 in reinforcing theitop. -Arranged in each of the channels 3 is a 'leg 5 one end of which is foldably connected with the under side of the table top by means of a hinge, one
tion in the bottom of the corresponding channel '3. Each of the hinge leaves 6 is rigidly secured Vin position as mentioned by means of screws 7 and also by means of a substantially -U-shaped socket member 8 which is secured in position to the strips 2 by means of screws 9. The member 8 engages over laterally projecting ears lOvof the corresponding hinge leaf 6 as well as the outer end of said lleaf thus conducing to a rigid fastening of the hinge leaf in position. A
The construction is such, as will bev observed, that the legs 5 may be folded to position in the channels 3, as 4clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 or unfolded to operative positions in which the same depend. from the table top perpendicular thereto as shown in Fig. 3. lVhen said legs are in unfolded positions, the same fit snugly in the socket members 8, bosses 11 being formed upon the adjacent sides of the hinge leaves 6 for rengagement against the upper ends of the- `is such that, when the legs 5 are in folded Patented June 3o, i914.
positions and the keys 12 inserted into position in the slots 13 in socket members 8, said keys will engage against the extremities or end surfaces of said legs, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2, and thereby serve to lock said legs in folded position. Also,
the arrangement is such that, when the legs I 5 are in unfolded position and \the keys 12 inserted into position in the slots 13 1n socket `members 8, said keys will engage against one of the adjacent lateral faces of `the upper ends of said legs, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 and thereby serve to lock said legs in unfolded posit-ions. Said keys are releasably or removably secured in position by means of curved leaf springs 14, one of which coperates with eachof the socket members 8, said springs being adapted to engage*correspondinglyA formed recesses 15 provided in the ends of said keys, as clearly shown in Fig. 6. A flange 16 provided. at the outerv end of each key constitutes a. linger piece or handle whereby the same may be readily inserted or detached.
A table of the construction set forth will be found durable and economical in construction and adapted to efficiently serve the purpose for which the same is designed..
While l have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, thisis capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. l, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of' construction setl forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims. r
Having described my invention What l claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
l. fi folding table comprising a top; legs provided at the under side of said top; and a connection between said top and the upper end of each of said legs permitting of folding of the latter, said connection comprising a hinge., one leaf of which is secured to the leg, the other leaf thereof being secured to the table top; a removably mounted key adapted for engagement With each of said legs for locking the same in either folded or unfolded position, said key being pro#` vided With recesses in opposite sides thereof; and a leaf Spring adapted for engagement with said recesses for releasably holding the vlatter in operative position, substantially as described.
.2. A folding table comprsing a top; legs provided at the under side of said topg' hinges foldably connecting said legs With -said top; a locking key engaging the upper.
end portion of each leg and adapted to lock the latter in folded and unfolded positions,
'legs for 'holding such leg there being recesses in said key; and a l curved leaf spring engaging each of said reveach hinge having ya portion secured to one leg and a portion secured to said top; sub- ;stantially ULShaped members secured to said top, each of said-members engaging sides of one of said legs; a key held between the end portions' of each of said. lill-shaped members and engaging aside of one of said legs for holding such leg in operative position and springs carried by said Ueshaped member fandv operatively engaging the ends of said Ekeys, substantially as described.
4. A foldable table comprising a top.; legs.
fprovided at theunder side of said top; a :hinge connecting each leg With said top, each'hinge having a portion secured to one leg and a portion secured to the top; substantially ll-shaped members secured to said top, each of said members lengaging sides of one ofsaid legs; and a key held between the endportions of each of said U-shaped members and engaging the topend of one of said l 4 in folded position, substantially as4 described.
. ln testimony whereof I have signed my fname to this specification inthe' presence of two subscribing Witnesses. v p WILL/f W. .BURAEM- Witnesses:
