Specification of Letters Iatent.
Patented June 30, 1am. Serial No. 412,778.
T 0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. MOCLOUD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Flexible Fire- Resisting Shutters and Slats Therefor,' of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple and economical form of metal-clad or sheathed slat adapted more especially for the construction of flexible fire-resisting curtains or shutters.
The invention is embodied in the constructions herein shown and described, the invention not being confined toprecisely the details illustrated.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a perspective view showing fragments of two slats from a shutter or curtain strung on a portion of one of the connecting tapes; Fig. 2 is a vertical section transversely of the slats and longitudinally of the tape; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modification; Fig. 4 is a sectional view like that shown in Fig. 2 but of the modified form shown in Fig. 3.
In the views 5 designates a strip of wood or other material preferably of light weight w and adapted to retard radiation and conduction of heat. In Figs. 1 and 2 a sheet metal strip 6 is shaped to fit upon and cover one side and the two edges of the core or filling 5, while the other side of the core is covered with a plain unbent strip 7 engaged and held by the bent-over edges of the strip 6. The
character 8 designates the tapeforconnecting the slats. The tape isjpas'sed through holes 6 near the corners of the slat and in the instance shown isJpas'sed between the filling and the stripfl. The holes 6* are of greater length than the width of the tape 8 so as to allow for contraction and expan' sion of the sheathing. By passing the connecting tape 8 through the slats near one face easy flexibility of the curtain is insured, as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 4:.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the construction is the same except that a single strip of metal is bent so as to inclose the slat at both sides and edges, the
edge of the metal at one side being secured by bending the edge of the metal at one edge of the core down over it.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' A flexible fire resisting shutter or curtain comprised mainly of slats, each consisting of a core and a covering therefor, the covering being of sheet metal and the core of a different material, substantially as described, and the covering being longitudinally expansi-ble with reference to the core when subjected to the heat of fire and said covering provided with holes for the passage of a flexible metallic device for connecting the slats to form the shutter, in combination with such flexible metallic connecting de vice passed through said holes, said holes being of sufiiciently greater diameter longitudinally of the slats than the corresponding diameter of the flexible connecting device to permit the expansion of the metallic cov ering with reference to the core without'interference by the connecting device when the slats are subjected to the heat of impinging fire as explained.
