Be ii known that I, Josnrn Lumen, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented a newand useful improvement in Combined Sash Actuating Devices and Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawlugs, forming part of this specification, in

Lly invention has relation to a combined sash-actuating device and lock, and is designed to provide a simple and efiicient de- 30 vice of this character which will be positive in its action; which can be operated only from the inside; and which will lock the sash either wholly open or wholly, closed, or in anv desired partially open position.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown a pro ferred embodiment thereof and which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes can be made in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts. without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.

5 designates chains which are connected at their lower ends to the lower port-ion of the lower sash 4, one at each side. These chains are of lazy-tong construction, and preferablveonsist each of a. series of double outer links 6, and single inner links 7.
The three upper linlrs of each chain are at tached hy pivots 8 to tvr'o traveling nuts 9. which are mounted upon the threaded pon' tion of a shaft or spindle 10. The two outer links at the upper end of each chain are connected to one of these nuts and the single central link is connected to the other nut.v The shaft 10 is mounted in suitahleheau ings 11 in. the window frame, and the portion thereof engaged by the nuts has a. don 6 blethreud 1'2 and 13. the two threads being of opposite hand. The frame is recessed, as shown at 2?, in-Fig. 4:, to receive thethreed ed portion ofthe shaft, together with the nuts, and the edge oi; the sash is recessed hollowed out, as shown at I l, to give suffrcient clearance for the chains to work freely. 1' also preferably provide the upper sash 2 with similar chains 15, connected at their lower ends to the lower portion of thesas and at their upper ends to the shafts or spindles 16, which are similar to the shafts gr-sfiindles 10. Each of the tour spindles" 18 provided at its outer end with a knob or button 17, by means-0f which the shaft or spindle can be rotated.
The operation will be readily understood. By turning the two shafts or spindles to which the chains attached to one of the sashes are connected, the nuts 9 are more either toward or away from each 1 on the double threads 12 and 13. ti l" nuts are brought together in the p shown in Fig. 3. the lazy-tong chains thereby be extended to their full length and the sashes are in their closed positions. When the shaftsor spindles are turned in the reverse direction, the nuts 9 separate-as shown in Fig. 6, and the lazy-tong chains are contracted, thereby, in the case of the lower sash, drawing i'r upwardly,- und'in the case or the upper sash, forcing it downwardly to open position.
In order to-increase the'speed of eperw tion,- Without unduly increasing the pitch. the threads and 13, I may employ knobs or buttons, such as shown in 6 and 'Z. in this form, the pinion 1.8 is secured to the outer end of the shaft or spindle, and x ternal rim gear 22, on the knob or hut-ton proper 23, By rotating this knob or button, the series of pinions 15) are rotated in unison, thereby rotating the pinion 18 and the shaft or spindle. The advantages of my invention will be apparent. since it provides a. very simple and positive device for both actuating and'locking the sashes. The device obviates the necessity for a box construction of the frame, such as is required with cords and pulleys; it can he applied at comparatively low cost, and it effectively prevents the sashes being operated from the outside.
I claim:
1. A Window sash actuating and locking device, comprising a Window frame having i guides for a window sash. a Window sash movably mounted in said guides, a lazy-tong chain in each guide attached to a sash at one end, operating shafts 1n the frame, one OIi' said shafts extending into each guide, and I operating connections between the other end of each lazy-tong chain and its respective operating shaft, said connections being within the guides in the frame; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a sliding Window sash and its frame, of lazy-tong chains conncc!cd to said sash at one end portion, separate nuts connected to the other end of each chain, shafts or spindles mounted in the window frame and having double thread portions engaged by said nuts. and actuating knobs or buttons for the shafts or spindles, substantially as described.
